I'm not sure what to make of Gendo anymore. He's framed as the bad guy, but he and Misato are working toward the same goal of getting rid of Seele and their Evas, and his grand scheme prevents Shinji from doing something really fucking stupid.

Laser Gendo is Light+Aizen in Keikakus when he was a loser who got told by his wife, Kaworu and Rei in EoE. The three of them were strip out their power considerably to empower him in Rebuild.

The Angel-sealing Hex Glyphs and the AAA Wunder in particular are obvious references to the Atlantean technology featured in Nadia.
Even the EVA units might not be 100% man-made, since we know that 4 of them are actually Adams.

A little further elaboration, Gendo is formost a brilliant scientist and potentially the reason the EVA program is sucessful as it is.

He wishes to use Instrumentality to reunite with his wife Yui; while he mentions to SEELE that "death creates nothing", the series never goes into more detail on what plans he had for the rest of humanity during Instrumentality.
