What's the most pretentious anime you've ever seen?
What's the most pretentious anime you've ever seen?
K-on
the worst 1st ep. of all time
what the fuck
how can anime be pretentious
FUCK OFF with your stupid meme thread
Non Non Biyori
Lucky Star
Aria
Eva
"Pretentious" is the ultimate meme non-criticism. Calling something pretentious is admission that you lack the skill or capacity to express why you didn't like something. Rather than admitting that you didn't fully understand it, you simply imagine that it and everyone who likes it is playing a big game of pretend and that you're "above" it.
All of the *monogatari series.
Fucking 2deep4u hipster shit.
You're favorite animu
Not anime but 'stealth rec thread'
This guy is pretentious.
Tatami Galaxy doesn't feel pretentious because it was straightforward with it's message.
Psycho-Pass
Gargantia
Shinsekai Yori
Those three are the most pretentious for me, to be honest, Psycho-Pass is on a level of it's own when it's about being pretentious.
anything made by shaft
What does pretentious even mean anymore?
Subtlety isn't the same thing as being pretentious.
bait
if I were to call anything I've watched pretentious it would be ergo proxy
Fucking this
Pretentious can be a real criticism, but Cred Forums never uses the word correctly.
That's boring, pretentious is second though.
monogatari
Inversely, "fun" is the ultimate meme non-praise.
Ping Pong.
Lain
This.
Re Zero
...
Only true answer
xxxx-gatari
Shirobako was pretentious as fuck.
It's the Urobutcher touch.
No.
It's edgy at least when you use pretentious any show were the story could be told in a simpler way fall into the category.
With edgy some shows won't get any criticism for their gore because it's a classic, or its just supposed to be like that or its really well animated gore. People use it as blanket criticsm when the shows actual problems lie elsewhere.
>Psycho-Pass
Fucking this. Does Urobucher have no self awareness? Most of his pleb audience watch the show for the edge and the tweest.
Fuck off with your buzz words. Pretentious isn't valid criticism.
Bakemonogatari no doubt
Urobutcher is incredible at creating an atmosphere, but sucks at writing characters. i.e: That fucker who quotes Shakespeare every 10 minutes.
An anime can't be pretentious
Pretentious are the faggots spouting faggotry pretending to be smart
How so? It's message is straight forward, only its presentation is somewhat abstract. It doesn't really take itself seriously enough or present anything beyond its core message to be considered "pretentious"
babby's first pretentious anime
Right so like shows of Uroburcher.
If you fags think Eva or Lain are pretentious you must've not seen this piece of shit.
I'll never fall for the "Shinbo is a good director" meme ever again.
Pretty much. There's some interesting stuff in there, but the whole new-wave aesthetic is totally pointless and tends to distract from the actual story rather than add to it.
Initial D. If I want to feel the excitement of car racing, I'd be watching F1
gurren langan
holy fuck that anime
bunch of shit
Code Geass
it's a non-criticism because it's essentially congruent with "ambition". calling it pretentious instead might imply there's other shortcomings but it's not a bad trait per se.
Everything miyazaki. Pure garbage
This thread is pretty pretentious, not gonna lie.
Lain.
I was with you until the last sentence
>2deep4u as an argument
>ever
>Shinsekai Yori
I'm doxxing you senpai
The entire Kara no Kyoukai series.
It's nonsensical and boring.
So it wasn't just me.
Madoka
In every possible way it tries to look like it's deeper and more intelligent and more artistic than it really is.
Witch battles use wildly different art styles for no other reason than to be different.
It throws debunked pseudo-science around as justification for the incubators who may as well just be Vulcans.
It tries to beat you over the head with themes of transition to adulthood and a reliance on one's own determination instead of outside forces. These themes routinely fall flat and fail to convey any sort of point beyond "they exist."
Hell, its very premise can be summed up as " hey guys, did you know that if you really think about it Mahou Shoujo stories are kind of fucked up and tend to be Faustian deals with a pretty color palette?" It then beats you over the head by literally putting a quote from Faust on screen, but in German because that makes it look smarter. This is despite the fact that it fails to incorporate the most important element of Faust, obsession leading one to spurn the chance at redemption, until the third movie and completely botches the concept of the deal itself for the sake of a twist reveal.
Also Sayaka is just a godawful mess of a character and the fact that a doujin that features her vagina being stitched shut actually closes plotholes says it perfectly for me.
Fuck Madoka, biggest piece of shit in all 2011.
(You)r favourite anime
the one about your life
Still better than most of the moeshit Cred Forums is fond of.
I don't something's pretentious when it spends an entire episode outright doing exposition and wikipedia. If anything the series was too lazy in that regard.
GitS Innocence. Every time they made one of those "oh so deep" quotes, which is basically the entire movie, I felt like turning it off right there.
>What's the most pretentious anime you've ever seen?
11 eyes
Blast of the Tempest
Penguin Drum
Petite Cossette
Gods Notebook
Goseck
At least Penguin Drum and Blast of the Tempest were watchable, and even borderline good. God's notebook suffered from the loli character who was so pretentious I wanted to gouge my eyes out every time she was on screen, otherwise the first and last arc of the show were borderline brilliant (you just had to wade through a river of shit to get to it). the other two were so pretentious I wanted to gag and throw up. With 11eyes ending up in the pantheon of worst anime I ever finished.
Is it wrong to be a contrarian?
This is the true answer.
Whats even pretentious on Psycho-pass? S1 is real good (pretend s2 nevef exist)
/thread
Shaftfags need to go to be honest f a m
this too
>What's the most pretentious anime you've ever seen?
I honestly don't know. I enjoy most shows *despite* their actual story and dialogue, so it's all the same to me.
>Also Sayaka is just a godawful mess of a character and the fact that a doujin that features her vagina being stitched shut actually closes plotholes says it perfectly for me.
Perfect Cred Forumsnon, thats a perfect proof Madoka is pretentious.
In all honesty, I agree with you.
The worst was when there was literally a short dialogue between two characters composed entirely of a few quotes back and forth. That was TOO far.
Definitely Angel's Egg
...
Pretentious anime?
Madoka
>literally endless eight but in eleven episodes
>people call it a masterpiece
Ghost in the Shell Innocence is the most pretentious anime if you don't know anything about Oshii.
Basically, Oshii doesn't do it to be pretentious, he is just batshit insane, so actually I like that movie.
Ghost in the Shell films, haven't seen nor do I care to watch the series.
Tatami Galaxy was anything but pretentious. Take your buzzword and shove it up your ass, shaftfag.
...
Tatami Galaxy is actually great, though.
For pretentiousness, FLCL easily takes the cake.
None of the shows mentioned here have got anything on the drivel that is Limit Cycle.
How is this pretentious?
It doesn't feel like there is anything beyond the obvious to it and it keeps throwing that obvious thing at your head like three times every single episode.
Penguindrum is just convoluted as hell.
>the fact that a doujin that features her vagina being stitched shut actually closes plotholes says it perfectly for me.
I'm going to have to verify this, so could you please point me towards this doujin?
My interest in such a thing is obviously only purely of an academic nature.
I don't really get how FLCL is pretentious. It uses a lot of symbolism throughout, some more obvious than others, but it is pretty straight forward about the coming of age theme.
Anything made by Satoshi Kon.
>Don't think too hard about stuff and "what ifs" just live your life
>pretentious
Oh wait, I forgot, anything that requires even a minimal amount of thinking is pretentious.
Fuck you Yuasa. Everything you make is garbage.
>Tatami Galaxy
>pretentious
>just because it has a different art style
fucking retards
He's just shit, not necessarily pretentious
>just because it has a different art style
That isn't the reason anyone calls it pretentious you fucking mongoloid.
...
ur favrit anim3
nice "subtle" rec-thread by the way
The philosophers name droppings were what made me drop that shit. I'm a literature undergrade whose favorite anime is Tatami Galaxy and even I couldn't put up with the pretentiousness of Psycho-Pass. It wants to be taken seriously but it lacked subtlety.
By the way this thread is shit and everyone should feel like shit.
>actually accepting and embracing animation for what it is is pretentious
just what isn't pretentious?
Pretentious response
an obsession with match cuts and ridiculously short sequences isn't pretentious
So what's the fucking reason? The message is clear, the show doesn't take itself too serious, it hasn't DEEP SYMBOLISM. So why the fuck idiots call it pretentious?
What the fuck were they even trying to say?
I didn't say that
Talking fast so people who usually don't read can't keep up with the subs.
It cannot, you goddamn idiot. It can only serve as a summary of a criticism, not act as a form of criticism by itself. You may as well say "it's shit" or "it's boring" or "it's badly written" by themselves are forms of good criticism as well.
You mean literal retards? Who cares?
...
I'm going to disagree with you out of pure contrarianism.
This is Cred Forums. We can't like non-moe shows. We're literally only allowed to like CGDCT anime, otherwise we're just like Reddit/MAL/buzzsite of the month.
All shows called pretentiuous do not fall for the most part in the aforementioned genre, so it's fair to insult them however one can. They're not actually pretentious? Who fucking cares? If you can call them so then do it, don't give nornalfags any stepping stone. It's a literal moral duty, and if you disagree you're part of the cancer that's been killing this site since 2008.
Nice false flag, Cred Forums-kun
How the fuck is katanagatari pretentious?
>written by Nisio Isin
Go figure.
>we
>having unique visuals and art stile is pretentious
Stopped reading right there.
0/10, regardless if I agree with the opening statement or not.
Otoyomegatari isn't exactly pretentious
That's not an argument. That's just you being a meming faggot.
THE HOLY TRINITY OF PRETENTIOUS ANIME
ERGO PROXY
GITS:INNOCENCE
KARA NO KYOUKAI
you cannot prove me wrong.
Really? It never read off as pretentious to me. It looked more like a story about a guy who didn't know what to do with 4 years of his life.
I loved Ergo Proxy and I agree with this. All the raison d'ĂȘtre, the talking greek statues, the radiohead ED, the Huxleyan themes that go absolutely nowhere. It sets up elements that at first seem like they're actually going to lead somewhere and explore and comment on a theme only to end up just being background flare. It was pretty annoying.
fuck off you liberal arts retard, there will always be shit that has a deep meaning but the message is fucking stupid like a edgy teenagers wet dream, or some simple ass morale that is overly expanded on in a stupid and drawn out manner.
And of course there are imbeciles like you who try to add meaning to everything because the crap you're watching is nothing but chinese children's cartoons and you'er trying to making it more "mature" so you dont get embarrassed by it.
pic related, its the sort of crap idiots like you would pay millions for
You see? This is what I'm talking about.
If we accept things like, for example, Fate, where will we draw the line? What will prevent Naruto from becoming fully accepted?
Moe shows are different from all the others. When you show them to "manime" fans they, having immense shit taste, will cringe and start asking how anyone can like this stuff. By not calling out these people you encourage them to take hold of the site.
tl;dr the only Cred Forums approved anime are moe shows, allowing the others to be discussed here will create cancer
Go back to Cred Forums, and please refrain from posting on Cred Forums until you have lurked here for at least two years.
>And of course there are imbeciles like you who try to add meaning to everything because the crap you're watching is nothing but chinese children's cartoons and you'er trying to making it more "mature" so you dont get embarrassed by it
And you, on the other hand, are doing the exact opposite, that is excluding the possibility that some anime can have deep meanings, and calling out those who want to discuss them. How is your reasoning not equally retarded?
Are you being sarcastic? I'm not sure
>deep meanings
fuck off back to gaia you fucking casual. You see deep meanings anywhere? After all these fucking years on Cred Forums you see anyone discussing deep meanings? There were never fucking deep meanings anywhere. Half of the fucking time its a easy to understand message that no one gives a fuck about because its basic knowledge. The other half of the time its idiots like you who look too deeply into shit that you're just spewing out fantasy and everyone is going to call you out on your bullshit.
Its fucking chinese cartoons, stop fucking acting like its a philosophical piece of work dumbass, cause 99% of the time it isnt.
Rothko's paintings are not about meaning or a hidden message or anything, they're as straightforward as art gets. They're about how raw color can evoke emotion and draw you in.
But you obviously have never seen a Rothko in person, so you obviously can't understand.
I can't tell if you're being serious or false-flagging, but please go on, you're kind of entertaining.
>Ching chong ching chong ching chong Jonathan Swift. Ching chong ching chong ching Brave New World ching chong, eh Kougami-kun?
lol it's just cartoons bro no need to get so butthurt :P
Those references fit the general theme and setting of the show.
Are you serious? The only thing it did from the beginning was set a mood.
>you have to see it in person to understand
You can search this crap up online and youll see the exact same line with completely different reasoning, which goes to show there was never a meaning to begin with and you were all pulling its worth out of your own ass
>the most important element of Faust, obsession leading one to spurn the chance at redemption,
>Gretchen and Faust literally goes to heaven coz they became better after the shit they went through
