To be fair, it hasn't sunk THAT low in terms of show quality aside XYZ arc's end. It's just provided a massive sense of blue balls and is currently underwhelming the audience incessantly with its laziness rather than completely destroying itself.

Shark's switch to the barians in Zexal II is an example of how the show could plummet dramatically, the characters all entirely changing personality and setting while doing nothing with said setting like in 5ds ep 65 is another, the show "killing off" five characters in one ep with little fanfare like during GX/ZEXAL is another, avoiding all of the Demon Duelist backstory would be another, bringing Atem/Yugi/Judai/Yuma back to save the day would be another (Yusei saving the day would turn it into the most hilarious shitstorm in YGO's history).

According to 2ch they were really mad about the treatment the GX characters get (with Edo acting like jerk towards the Sakakis, switching sides too fast and losing the two duels he had; as well as Asuka being out of character, being destroyed by her former GX teacher's deck and getting carded right after her first actual important duel).
Complaints also came from GX fags being pissed off about Super Poly getting used like a regular card.
They said Arc V is an 'anti GX fan fiction' and they even said that 'that Yuri gave birth to the GX hate'.
They also blamed Ono of 'raping the GX characters'.

If they were pretty forgiving the latest episodes wouldn't be some of the worst rated ever. Even before that they rated episodes low. The Edo vs Yuya two parter got extremely mixed ratings.

In normal circumstances, even the trashiest seasonal shows can manage half/half at the minimum with their nico ratings.

I'm just saying that Yuri finally doing something and getting a little focus might appease their anger a little.

This episode at a 14% very good rating is still terrible. The last episode of Live Love Sunshine got around a 40% very good and the fanbase is in a complete panic.

Zexal had plenty of good moments and its highs were better than Arc-V. It even got better over time compared to Arc-V getting worse. Kuwabara at least has the basic fundamentals of directing and storytelling down while Ono just sits there like a monkey fucking everything up. BEFORE anyone argues with this guy, please remember that for Kuwabara's efforts and making ZEXAL such a cash cow for Shueisha and Konami he was allowed to be in charge of writing the dueling script for Dark Side of Dimensions.

Kuwabara had nothing to do with the duel script though. It was mostly Kaz with a few touches from Hikokubo.

How strange, ZEXALs duels were consistently the worst part of it.

The main characters (outside of Yuma) were reasonably engaging, and the story made sense, though a couple of plot points (the door, Yuma's dad) got consistently shafted.

And yet the duels were so bland and uninspired that I can barely sit through an entire episode, because it's completely predictable.

Remind me again, how many times did Double Up Chance win the duel for Yuma/Astral? Towards the end it seemed like the only combo they knew.

Kuwabara does better with CONSISTENCY and storytelling. This is an objective fact. Ono has vastly more visually interesting moments occasionally, like with all of ep 34, the reira stuff in 67, and Sergey/Jack's physical interactions in 94 though.

I would struggle to consider Zexal's highs particularly great and I'd completely disagree regarding it getting better over time, but that's a matter of opinion. Additionally, none of Zexal's high points aside vector were all that great in terms of visual direction. They were more competently done with regard to storytelling basics, absolutely. But the issue is that it was never anything to write home about in terms of creativity.

Visually though, when Ono actually DOES HIS JOB once in a blue moon, it turns out better than Kuwabara's perpetual consistency. Like ep 34, which is arguably one of the singular best eps in the entire fucking franchise in terms of visual storytelling. You get the ENTIRE story behind XYZ/Fusion's conflict and Shun's perspective just via the duel itself. You could even watch the ep without sound and understand just about EVERYTHING about Shun and the resistance's perspective.

Eps like that jump from "good direction for ygo" tier into "ACTUALLY STUNNING" direction tier.

It's for moments like that, that I'll tolerate the lazy bullshit that Ono brings when he so obviously gets bored with his job.
