The idea behind future is similar to the idea behind mediocrity that UDG pushes. Basically it is the MGS2 moral wherein as opposed to siding under one extreme or another you choose to walk for yourself, while Komaru wanted to just live a semi-normal life with Touko, Hajime wanted to defy both options presented to him and carve a new future, it isn't about hope or despair, it's about faith in himself and his friends to make the life they want to. Hope will always fall into despair and despair will always give way to hope, but you don't need hope to make a happy ending for yourself nor despair to be in a bad ending, FUTURE is about freedom.
