Mitarai suddenly revealed that he actually has a Hope brainwashing anime that will undo Junko's despair video. Naegi says that isn't a good idea, Mitarai uses his new hope video as a geass to brainwash the FF soldiers into killing Naegi and the others while he escapes to broadcast his hope anime to everyone in the world.

Munakata and Aoi are dead, Aoi was shot in the leg and made Naegi leave her and she started bleeding out. Munakata was shot up by soldiers in a blaze of glory. Mitarai plays his hope anime and brainwashes every, even monaca who was watching from space.

The anime cuts to a theater where Junko and Chisa are watching the entire thing and commenting over it Umineko style. Chisa insists that hope is just beginning. Junk says she doesn't care because they are already dead which implies they are watching from Hell.

You know, I can kinda see ways that they could convincingly bring back Kyoko, but I can't think of any for Chiaki.

The first game had a legitimately terrifying premise that was executed very well and left the "overarching plot" just ambiguous enough to keep it effective (or rather there wasn't an overarching plot yet and what was there was only there to drive in what was already terrifying about the premise/cases).
SDR2's premise felt a bit forced but it was also a legitimately strong retread of a lot of DR1's threads with better characters and better cases. Twist at the end was clever but it went a little too far into the horrible plot bits.
UDG was fanservice that just showed everyone's favorite characters because that's how you get that ¥¥¥ and also retroactively fucked up bits of DR1 and DR2 by making them too explicit to be interesting.
DR3 took UDG's lead and went entirely too far.
What we imagined the tragedy/the conversion of class 77/Izuru Kamakura to be would always have been better anyway, even if the anime hadn't been a disaster.

Well I am contemplating abandoning this series.

DR3's story really isn't any worse than the games. It heavily leans on the games as a means for context, and it explains things that we've always had hints of throughout the series.
