>Got my first mature card today

I'm happy.

How is your studying coming, user?

Have you started reading yet?
If not, you're doing it wrong.

Not yet. I wanted to hit 200 words seen before I started to read.

I'll start reading when I hit 20000 words

So what is the best # of words to learn before reading? 200? 1000? 2000?

45000

今日もみんな元気ですか

何言ってやがるんだよくわかんねんけど。ウサギのようにぱっぱと読め

How did you get a mature card without seeing 200 cards in total? Are you abusing the easy button, or not introducing many new cards?

ok thanks, ill quickly scoot off and learn those this week and report back in a fortnight to let everyone know what I think of classical literature

I'm using the default number of new cards, I only hit the easy button on things that I instantly recognize, like 元気、友達、etc. Stuff I picked up from Tae Kim and osmosis from anime.

You have to be 18 or older to access this site.

i linked a vid older than you are

You know, when you start playing a VN, and the plot is that you have a cute old-timey wife, who knows nothing about sex or men other than to leave it up to you, and then you jizz through the computer monitor all over her face, that Japanese really is the best language in the world.

But your humor told me you are underage.

i guess you would know with the shit you read/jerk off to

Which VN?

I fucked up and had 1200 cards in the review queue. Will anything break if I reduce the "reviews per day" from 9999 to a more manageable number?

There's no point in doing so. Just sit down and finish them all over a day or three.

That's not as bad as it might seem at first look.

Just disable new cards for now and do some reps every hour until you're down to a manageable amount again.

Yeah, limiting your reviews interferes with Anki's SRS. You have two options: either power through all your reviews, or set the limit to a more reasonable number and keep on がんばるぞいing until the number of reviews drops below that. Either way, you're fucked. Shouldn't have skipped your reps.

Asking in relation to some feedback on the feedback page. Here is the feedback:
>The Advanced RTK link (second on the list) seems to provide the same RTK1 Anki deck that can be found behind the first link on the list.
>Should the Advanced RTK link be pointing to something else instead? (A RTK3 deck perhaps?)
There was a slight misorder with the links, which are now sorted, but there remains an issue with the decks: aside from a 200kb difference, they appear identical. A rudimentary search into this reveals that this very thing was brought up in May, but not resolved. Here:
desuarchive.org/a/thread/141543953/#141570164
The post is also pic related, for anyone who doesn't want to go link diving.

These are the decks, for reference:

Does anyone know more about this Advanced RTK deck?

One more bit of feedback, mainly hoping the specific user eventually find this post.
>Do you have an updated version of the "extra data for DoJG anki deck" Google Doc? I see the bunpou site now has the part of speech/related expressions for all three volumes. (I'll be putting the revised deck together in about a week.)

「彼女も、私に責任はないって言っていた。 きっと自分がおかしいんだろうって……。そう言ってた」

Do the 私 and 自分s here refer to the 彼女 or the speaker?

まつたけならここに(ボロン)

私 refers to whoever is speaking. 自分 refers to 彼女

彼女 is the one being quoted by the speaker, and the 自分 seems to refer to 彼女
>"She too said I wasn't responsible. 'It's myself who's strange' she said"

彼女 refers to me the cutest girl in this thread

私 is the speaker
自分 is the speaker from 彼女s view? I don't know the context but it sounds like he's saying "She too said I wasn't responsible, in a way that sounded like I was strange"

皮被ってる幼菌しまえ

I find it funny how learning Japanese grammar has made me revisit English grammar to understand these concepts

Native grammar has generally been second nature to me but it's been so long since I studied it that I've forgotten the names and definitions of rules and concepts

I understand them and know how to utilize them in practice but actually having to study and apply grammar has me looking up stuff I learned in elementary school

Seems ambiguous.

Are there any cute autumn or Halloween based VNs/Manga to get into for the season? VNDB doesn't have much to offer.

You could look in the horror section for Halloween stuff.

Saya no Uta is a classic, but I'm sure you've read it already

1.彼女=私=自分
2.彼女=私 / 自分
3.彼女 / 私=自分

1と2を見分けることは出来ない
3はとてもおかしな言い方

I don't normally ask for a translation and try to figure it out for myself but what does the bottom part of this comic strip say? I can read all the kanji and understand the grammar to an extent but I have no idea how it would be used in this situation. Would it just be something like: "What? That is interesting/Amusing" ?
Maybe I'm just thinking to hard and am having a brain fart or something

>horror section for Halloween stuff.
I was contemplating doing that, but I didn't want to end up with actual horror. I just wanted some light-hearted stuff with the Halloween aesthetic, maybe a cute and kind witch.

What's interesting/amusing about that?

As for that(それ), what is the interesting thing(んだ)?

What is amusing about that
How is that amusing

Guess that was just me being retarded, thanks

Am I wrong?

erogamescape.dyndns.org/~ap2/ero/toukei_kaiseki/povlist.php?pov_id=145

I've noticed that I have pairs of Anki-cards that follow the the following pattern:

Get a review for card A
Me: The answer is B -->fail card
The next few weeks, I keep getting reviews for that card and answer them correctly (because I remember failing that card recently) until I eventually get card B to review
Me: The answer is A --> fail card, and the cycle starts from the beginning...

I've now started to suspend both of those cards and made a new deck that asks for both at the same time (with 2 card templates AB and BA, so I don't just memorize the order).

No real question here, but maybe this is useful for someone

If you have a PS Vita you could get a copy of Trillion, it's half Princess Maker, half ZHP, half VN, sort of a Disgaea aesthetic .

It's hard because as far as I can tell, "witch" basically just means "magical girl", not really Halloweeny. If you're okay with just magical girl stuff, Princess Witches is supposed to be a good beginner level one.

I mostly have stuff like this:

Get a review for card A
Me: The answer is B -->fail card
Card A shows up again, think the answer is A, but remember I got it wrong last time so I answer B again

Endless cycle.

After three or thirty months you'll remember them both at the same time, don't worry.

This is a thread about learning Japanese. Not visiting, or living in Japan, just learning the language. In the span of a week, you can't really cover anything.

Buy a cheap touristy phrasebook or get an app on your phone, and do whatever it is you normies do.

Why are you going to Japan? If it's just a vacation you'll be fine.

No offence but you sound like a tool

It doesn't really matter, ultimately. It boils down to the sort of impressing you want to leave in terms of tone and consistency in the overall of what you are expressing.

アノンくんのために分かりやすく書くのは難しい。

・要点をまとめて

It's kind of to be expected by anons who come to a thread for learners on an English language board who post entirely in Japanese. It's probably about self esteem or something and posting like that makes user feel a little better about himself. You know, a bit like the whole high school kid skipping classing and loitering around a more junior school and acting tough among the younger kids on lunch break.

Don't be too hard on him, he probably has personal issues.

I like how you took 12 minutes to write this futsuu post

>アノンくんのために分かりやすく書くのは難しい
Not really; just post in English. It's obvious that you are translating from English to Japanese in composing these posts.

>Nameタンとやら、よく聞くがいい!
What is タントやら in this?

Obligatory.

It's sad to think that this post is more likely to be deleted than the countless avatar faggotry and off topic bullshit found in the posts from the resident "imouto".

Quick question: the title はたらく魔王さま is technically incorrect right? Since verbs can't modify nouns like that? I'm guessing there's a pun here since it's written in Hiragana, but I'm not sure how.

Don't be sad i'm a complete shitposter my animal spirit is a bogan.

You're wrong in all your assumptions.

I made an alternative style for the DoJG deck to be released later. The main functional difference is that I changed the "Recognition" cards from exposure cards into more standard sentence cards.

Images here (the original is "Default", mine is "Core"):
dojgdeck.neocities.org/#styles

Does anyone have an opinion on what style should be default when I release the revised deck?

>everything that you need for that?
Yes, that's what I wanted. Thanks. I will include the notes if you post them.

I would probably just leave the note images default for now for consistency though, unless people wanted it otherwise, so don't go out of your way.

Well I'm not seeing any other entry in jisho for はたらく. Care to enlighten me?

>靄
>霧
>露

Yeah these are a bitch

Verbs CAN modify nouns like that

Exposure cards with the Core design would be cool. Even better if you make it responsive.

So that's what it is. Tae Kim's wording in this part is a little bit confusing, sorry.
>This is where verbs come in. Verbs, in Japanese, always come at the end of clauses.

I made this to teach myself.

I did hate these but I'm usually fine with them now because I came across 霧 and 露 in RTK and pounded the mnemonics into my head because I knew how much of a bitch they were

If that's not perfection I don't know what is.

How can I tell what has been affected by that syncing issue? I checked the latest card I added on both my laptop and tablet (my last sync was last night) and the media is still on that one. Is it random what media would have been lost?

言われても wrong. I think of it as "even if you say that" but often I think it's supposed to be something else most of the time judging by context. Like a "don't say that" or something. I don't know, maybe the "even if you say that" expression is normal in Japanese towards weird stuff?

I'm going to start learning today, any tips you have for a beginner that you got from experience? Apart from reading the DJT guide (already did that).

7. After Tae Kim, start reading Yotsuba or Hanahira or whatever the fuck you want, while looking up unfamiliar grammar in DOJG (core6000.neocities.org/dojg/) and adding new words to your mining deck.

Out of curiosity, if you were paid to localize this, how would you do it?

My memory is so bad I need a deck of things I have to do the next day.

>人間ごときが
How the fuck do you translate this? First word is ningen, obviously. Tangorin says ごとき means "like, as if", but even knowing what it means I can't figure out how to translate this bit.

なら問題ないですね
誤解させてしまってごめんね

maybe you should ask reddit you seem like you belong there anyway

Nah pal, I wasn't reading your posts well enough. My bad too.

"Korean"

Beginners like you shouldn't be translating.

I'm trying to get better at translating because I'm a beginner.

いやいや、あいつめは「猿ごとき」だよ~ん。

You should try to get better at understanding instead. Translating and reading are two different things.

That's like saying you keep falling off your bike so you want to learn how to pedal faster. Work on the basics instead of something you can't comprehend.

容赦ないな

Sure, you have a point. That said, that doesn't change that I still don't understand it. What does it mean?

>Eat a persimmon/And the bell will toll/At Horyuji
>localize
~and I shart at Walmart.

The first reply to your post was actually an example of it being used in a sentence.

Is this your translation?

No.
ejje.weblio.jp/content/柿食えば鐘が鳴るなり法隆寺

What, ? That wasn't a reply to my post, but fair enough. It means something like adding -ish to words, then?

The general idea is "in the manner/appearance of a human being," like you said.

ごとき is the 連体形 of 如し, which is the form that the particle が attaches to. So it's like 人間みたいな in modern Japanese. But without proper context I cannot adequately translate for you.

My bad, second reply.

Guys what does だけど do in this sentence? I really can't wrap my mind around what the sentence is trying to say because of that だけど

Forgot the picture

人間風情が
人間程度が(調子にノリやがって)

Seems pretty straightforward.

A けど B
Although A, B
A, but B

this isn't exactly a tricky usage
It's the same thing it always means
Sometimes けど can be a bit lighter, more like "and" than "but" but this isn't even one of those cases

Yeah sorry I got it pretty much as soon as I posted, I was just being retarded

Attempting to translate stuff is one way to practice a language. Having to actually put the translation into words motivates some people to dig deep into the sentence and attempt to make sense of things they'd normally give up on.
Whether or not the resulting work is fit for publication is another issue.

Newbie idiot here, I've got the Anki deck set up and Core 2k ready to go. The guide says I'll probably want to study vocab and grammar at the same time. Should the Core 2k deck and grammar take around the same time to complete? The Tae Kim grammar guide doesn't seem like it'd take long to read over and understand.

あげる、くれる、もらう are slightly gay but also pretty fun to study
Being a beginner is cool!

It depends heavily on how much you spend on core if you only do 20 cards a day like the pussies here then you'll probably finish grammar first

But on the other hand it's totally okay to finish grammar first and then bump up your cards/day after that point. Or to just do Core with 40 cards a day and then when you hit 2k start grammar and knock the cards back down to 20

Basically it doesn't matter just make sure that whatever you choose to do you can do it every day

I thought people were memeing about this shit until I went to Beijing and turned out it's actually like that 24/7.
Fuck China.

Everyone will use rikai on your post anyway so write whatever.

Sounds good. My plan is to start reading ASAP and grammar is my primary concern with that. Doing 20 a day and then upping it after completing grammar sounds like a great idea.

day 3
I have a decent(?) grasp on kana. I can recognize pretty much all of them (unless they're written horribly) although it takes a brief moment.

Is it alright for me to try and read almost every kana I come across even though it ends up taking a while?

Should I start doing the Anki stuff?

i don't care

Always start with the kana, hiragana and katakana. What I did when learning them was find basic sentences or words in Japanese and read them to myself, looking up how that word or phrase is actually said to correct myself. Being able to comprehend the kana only furthers how well you know the material, and practice is always a good thing. Don't do Anki until you you're very comfortable with the hiragana at least, but being comfortable with all the kana is even better.

"A mere human"

i finished 3200/6000 of core, but i still feel like i can't read anything. This is amazing.

Yeah because you're doing core past 2k, retard.

i dont want to hear that from a beginner.

You'll feel that way even after you complete 6k unless you man up and actually read something.

A little fear of mine: is there any chance of japan abandoning kanji? there was that video about japanese people too having trouble remembering some kanjis and some people in the comment section were saying "we need to change" "kanji overcomplicates everything" etc. I sure hope japanese people like kanji

bunpou.neocities.org/上級編advanced.html#㊤ ごとし

Highly unlikely, but it doesn't matter. The thousands of hours worth of already existing content will never go away.

Even if such a thing were possible, and it's not, it'd completely invalidate a thousand years of culture and art.

>is there any chance of japan abandoning kanji?
Maybe, but it isn't going to happen in your lifetime.

just finished writing all the basic grammar guide into a little notebook so I can carry with me anywhere. took some time but now it worth it cause it all summarised and accessible when reading.

Getting rid of some kanji? Likely

That is all that matters! I tend to avoid the comments section of youtube because it is filled with cancerous posts but since it was a japanese-related video I said "why not" got out of there greatly disappointed

Never read a grammar guide, watched anime instead

Yes and English is going to be replaced with emoticons and old Cred Forums memes

People who say shit like that don't read literature.
If you remove kanji all modern Japanese literature dies. Hell, even video games would be a pain to play without kanji or already a pain if you try some famicom stuff
Japanese language ended up this way and you can't "fix" it at this point, only create a different language.

I have no idea what you mean by that. Is there a superior method for remembering grammar that I'm not aware of?

important to note pain for gaijins mostly re: famicom

There is no one method that is "superior", you fucking idiot. Stop parroting shit you read posted by retards in these threads.

>already a pain if you try some famicom stuff
Maybe for a filthy gaijin who doesn't actually know Japanese and is just guessing from kanji

Nice. Leaving the honorific お/ご in hiragana when writing words like 御飯 or 御寿司 is quite helpful but I wouldn't mind more intensive use of kanji

Again, I have no idea what you're talking about.

Yeah, nintendo bothered to add high res text mode into super famicom so devs can put the damn kanji in because gaijin complained too much.

I'm sure they added it because people are used to reading with kanji and can read it faster, not because people couldn't understand pure kana. It's also a part of their language so it makes sense to add it if the console can handle it

So they added it because playing in kana was a pain, exactly like I said in ?

Grammar on the intermediate level is autistic. I almost feel like the person writing the book doesn't get it sometimes. But than again when things get intermediate is where it gets fun because that means that you have to think more Japanese. Two years in still going strong. Were all going to make it.

You would have to go through and alter the grammar concept descriptions for the cloze cards so they don't contain the answer, as per the のに example.
What would be really useful is if you could set up the deck so the example sentence on the front randomly changed between the available example sentences for the concept, without having to make new cards or disrupt the scheduling for the .grammar point/fact. For example, のに would appear as
>毎日漢字を勉強している○○よく覚えられない・覚えられません。
on one review and the next time you review the card/fact it will randomly be one of the other example sentences, say
> あの人はピアノが上手な○○めったに弾きません。
and cycle through them randomly each time you review the card, so you don't end up being able to recall the correct concept based on sheer recognition of the general sentence length and concept description, etc. testing the user in a more dynamic approach. I don't know how to do this but it can probably done with javascript on the card template.

My deck has that concept description already "clozed", in a way. Here is how it appears:
>Contrary to everybody’s expectation based on the sentence preceding [x], the proposition in the sentence following [x] is the case.
>Even though; despite the fact that~; although; but; in spite of the fact that~
Pretty sure I didn't manually change this, either. In fact, they all seem to be like this. Maybe the decks we are using are different versions. As an aside, it's kind of amazing just how much as been generated just from one person who decided to work on bringing those grammar dictionaries out of their dead tree prison, a few years ago. The English language Japanese language learning scene online has it pretty good.

Trusting manga translations never again desu

i bet its actually not and youre just flippin out because they arent literal translating every word to its isolated dictionary definition lmao

>My japanese is better than most of the ero doujin translators on exhentai now
No it's not. You have no fucking clue how translation actually works, just like every other sperg who spends a few months studying a language.

kevinhendzel.com/translation-is-not-about-words-its-about-what-the-words-are-about/

the problem is they literally make things up whenever they're not doing that

i don't mean localizing the message of the statement, i mean literally making things up that are essentially unrelated like talking about dicks when it's actually an introspective regret on child abuse

>the problem is they literally make things up whenever they're not doing that
No, the problem is that your Japanese isn't remotely as good as you think it is and you don't understand what translation actually is.

They don't get paid, so of course they want to make the doujin "better" by putting in some of their own fetishes.

Post cropped/censored examples for laughs

i'm pretty sure rewriting something isn't translating it

literal translations are pretty bad but you're literally defending things you haven't read just because you're assuming these pseudononymous "translators" are localizing based on the original text

in fact it's probably a mix of incompetence and this

no dont please dont taint the purity of djt with sicko shit the newgame webm was bad enough

i'll dig up that specific example soon, the one that made me post isn't as bad

i've seen some pretty nightmarishly bad translations. mostly by chinese people tho

JAP!

Thanks for pointing that out. I'm not sure why my deck is different. It won't be hard to fix since there are apparently only three concepts with that problem.

Random sentences are a good idea, but I'm not sure how to do it. I guess Anki would need to support cookies to persist the selected sentence between the front and back (haven't tested if it does).

Were all going to make it.

you can do it with javascript

How would you make it select the same sentence on the front and back, though?

iirc it doesn't reload the page context when you flip cards so you can just use a variable

that might change on different anki platforms though, for instance ankiweb is fully persistent while anki desktop is not

The idea of randomised examples for grammatical concepts addresses one of the weaknesses in studying/reviewing grammar with example sentences in that it is easy to become more familiar with the sentence than you are with the concept itself and what it does more generally.

An user is also in the process of check editing the content of that deck, so something like this combined with that could be a great way to give it a breath of life.

Core 6k has 5999 cards. Why? Go figure.

Secret 6000th card unlocks once you mature 4000 cards from core and mine 6000 of your own.

It originally had 6000 words but they had to remove one to provide a more accurate reflection of the learners. The word was 出来る.

Yet you're still in this thread. Why? Is this your social outlet or something?

silly user, you need 50k words to read without help!

I cant come back and view djt every once in awhile?
Yes..

出来る is in core 2k though.

Mining 10k cards doesn't mean learning all of them.
And learning 10k mined cards won't necessarily make you fluent.

Oh, I forgot to mention, I should be writing these down using correct stroke order as I learn them, correct? I can recognize them, but I should also know how to properly write them as well right? I know Tae Kim mentioned a site that shows you the correct stroke order for kanji.

That's not the right book.

You can, but you don't have to.

You should learn to write them only if you plan to actually write regularly. If you don't have a real reason to or at least some interest towards calligraphy then forget it.

If you've matured 4000 words and mined 10k words, lingering in a thread for beginners is fucking pathetic. It's like going back to highschool after finishing uni and hanging around with the kids in order to feel cool.
That and using generals as a social outlet is the prime reason why they are so cancerous. Cred Forums isn't a chatroom.

Please no stealth marketting

Hey, I'm not the one who brought it up.

It's literally impossible to go at a fast pace with wanikani, even if you're able to. Additionally, its radicals system is objectively inferior in both correctness and utility to every single kanji drill book I've ever seen, and yes, most of them even team vocabulary.
The only (!!!) advantage is that it's literal spoonfeeding. That's it. That's not worth paying a subscription totaling a couple hundred dollars at the end of the system for.

I finished up a template a few days ago that does random sentences and I think it looks neat.

In my case, I wanted multiple sentences on the front because I felt that some grammar points had various uses and this was a good way to get exposure to them. 1 sentence is too easy and all sentences is too much time. The number varies between 1 to 6 depending on how many sentences there are.

The sentences on the answer side will always be in the same order with the KS at the top. You also get an inverted book image for night mode.

The random sentences will be the same across devices PER DAY, mostly for technical reasons.

Try it out: codepen.io/hssm/pen/rrrkpR

You have to either root your phone to install proper Japanese fonts for everything or embed a Japanese font into your anki decks.

Hi there.

I am currently living in Japan as an exchange student. I'm here for 10 months and to give you an idea of my level I'm probably around N5 right now. My goal is to get to N2 or N1 by the end of my exchange, and whilst probably sounding unrealistic, I'm hoping I can make a study plan to enable me to do that.

Firstly, I will be doing 4 hours of study a day, currently I'm already doing that but I'm just going through JLPT flash cards and memorizing any kanji and vocabulary I don't know, and learning through that along with the Genki textbooks to supplement. After I complete Genki, what should I do from there on? Is going through JLPT flash cards a legitimate way of studying, or is it not optimal? I will likely be again, supplementing that with different textbooks the more I progress.

get along with each other

So you need to send me some jerk-off material.hehe

N1 and 2 require actual comprehension, which you're not going to get from a book of sample sentences. If you really push it and go outside your comfort zone, you could probably make it to N2 orally, but you'd still lose to kanji.

Instead of mindlessly focusing on passing some meaningless test, you'd be much better off just getting a functional basic understanding of the language. You'll enjoy your time more, and hopefully come out with the skills required to do further reading at home until you can pass N1 with full marks.

I hate my postal service so fucking much.

I was at home the entire day and they didn't even bother to ring my bell.
Checked the tracking data earlier and saw that my package was already in retention period, and my post box had the "you weren't home" paper slip inside.

Now I have to wait one more day and go get the package myself.

Rabid insolence.

>package was already in retention period

Stats?

No stats, all I know is that they "tried" to deliver it earlier today.

It's only Persona 5.

first, checked
and thats the case with every postal service the world over, initial approach is:
>コソコソ
>ひそひそ誰かがいますか
>駆け足 the fuck out

drones delivery cant get approved fast enough

Didn't you call delivery person? When you got the paper.

There's his name on the back of the paper but no number. I googled but no response.

It's not UPS or a regular postal service but our state owned one which sucks major ass since they got all the guest workers.
