What movies has shinkai done? I like Miyazaki but the only great film I've seen so far of his is castle of cagliostro. Granted I haven't seen all yet, what makes shinkai so great.

His attempt at making a Miyazaki movie with Children Who Chase Lost Voices was horrible and embarrassing. Hosoda did it much better with Wolf Children.

'Kimi No Na Wa'/ 'Your Name' IMO is his best work yet..his magnum opus maybe..the visuals are amazing, the characters/story is decent, he finally figured out pacing thanks to the exceptional soundtrack by the Radwimps..when I watched the movie for the first time the music reminded me ofn'The Rainbows' from the seriesn 'FLCL'. Overall, surprisingly enjoyable film that resonates w/ contemporary Japanese youth culture, distant/hopeless love, & the possibility of a natural disaster affecting Japan echoes vibrantly w/ masterful precision...bravo, Shinkai-sensei..

With a single movie, he trounced KyoAni and Anno. Truly the next Miyazaki.

He sucked prior to this film. This is either the breakthrough moment where he becomes a director worth caring about for more than background art porn or it's the one fluke that will define him.
Based on his track record, I think he'll fuck up and put out an epic bomb. He has some incredibly self indulgent tendencies.

I'd like to take a more optimistic viewpoint of the future. Like maybe through the process of this film he came to terms with a lot of his faults.
