They're invisible/not forced onto you. If you go out and talk to certain characters at specific times you'll get a flag check for that character. Only way to know if you're on the right track is to look at a guide.

Just started fc yesterday and managed to get to chapter 1. I think people over-embellished how bad the game play is. It seem to play fine to me, if a little dry and easy. Story's nice. I like Estella a lot, not so much Joshua yet but they play off each other well. The villagers' having their own stories is pretty cute.

The gameplay isn't bad, it's just very slow, especially when you get beyond the first rank or two of arts and the animations get really tedious. Going from CS to the older games can be difficult if you aren't patient.

At this point I think the entirety of class VII are defined enough characters that there doesn't need to be a singular main protagonist.

Just have multiple characters be equally important and let the player choose who to control in the field.

Strictly from a gameplay standpoint, only Rean works. And CVII is kinda needed as well.

And more. I think that removing Rean as the protagonist or CVII from the roster would involve changes and going back on systems, and that shouldn't happen for the last game of the arc, but for the next one.

The only time they changed protagonists were in the 3rd, and then no one was tied to anything.

Laura might be best girl, but that doesn't mean I want her together with Rean. I saw the special bonding event and didn't like it, I honestly thought it was somewhat out of character so I reloaded and chose Emma instead. Then I find out it means worse than squat, because since CVII leave to go do their own thing, that scene only serves to set up a bittersweet goodbye because CS3 is a thing that exists.

Best girls are not for bittersweet scenes with Reanhogs.

Combat is turn based. Characters each have their unique crafts/skills. Magic/Arts can be greatly customised using the Orbment system (some characters naturally have better Orbment setups that allow them to be better Arts users). There are various turn bonuses like criticals, hp recovery, etc. You can hijack a turn with beneficial bonus from opponent by unleashing a character's special/S-Craft if you have enough charge for it.

Who are the best characters to use?

Rean - I used Vermillion on him in CS1 with lots of status effects quartz to the enemy. Dunno if it was good that way.
Emma - Criminal MQ as usual? She's the only one I was confident on how to have quartz on.
Laura - I'm actually having a hard time to know which MQ is the best for her even in CS1.
Fie - Thors(?) and delayer type?

The rest I really have no idea how to dress them regarding quartz.

For Mob battles, give Rean Scepter and Septium/Dragon Vein, loaded with Action and Impede quartz to fund your war. Otherwise, Vermillion works well when you get it
Emma's still a beast with Criminal, she gets even crazier too since they added Hades Gem (Domination for Arts) and Yaksha (+150 Ats/-150A ADef). Give her one offensive Lost Art
Laura will end most battles with Tauros and loading on Attack Quartz and Domination
Fie should be built as an Evasion Tank with all the Evade Gems, Wrath, Aeolus Gem, Action and Impede. Her Master Quartz is pretty flexible, I personally used Katze since it means only special undodgeable attacks can hit her.
Jusis should be built as a secondary Arts user and Support. I loaded with him support spells quartz like Acala Gem and Impenetrable Shield, some Ats quartz, and Skanda Gem (for speed and Chrono Burst). His master quartz is also flexible depending on what you what him to do. Pandora works well if you want him to be more offensive oriented and Moebius works well if you want to be more support oriented.
Can't say much about the others since I didn't use them as much, although Sharon with Juggler is a god tier Status inflicter

But I am playing the game on Vita.

While Criminal does a little less damage than Pandora per turn, its better for sustained nuking. Criminal's Crit chance makes it so Emma is almost always doing 1.5x damage at no additional cost. Between Criminal's built in Fire AT delay reducer, Quick Calibur, Fire Bell, and Diablos Gem/Cast 2, Emma basically has no delay between castings. This means she casts her spells quickly and has less of a chance of being interrupted by the enemies.
Pandora is a bit better if you're abusing Overdrive and Lost Arts

tl;dr Pandora is for slow-ish heavy hitting and Criminal is for rapid fire nuking
