Devil may cry 4

Whats the general consensus on dmc4? good or bad? better or worse than which ones?

This is how the series goes right:

dmc1: pretty good
dmc2: garbage
dmc3: considered the best

How does dmc4 stack up compared to the others?

Not quite on par with 3 but better than 1, 2, and the 'reboot'.

Backtracking really killed the momentum.

dmc4 gameplay > dmc3 gameplay

This pretty much, but only if you play dante and get really into it. on a casual level dante plays like crap. Nero isn't complex enough.

dmc 3 > dmc 4 in everything else.

this, but for some reason people dont care about gameplay too much in a DMC game (?????) so 3 is hailed as king.

the people that made DMC 4 were fucking technology magicians.
such a good looking game considering its age.
Special Edition is pretty fun with the extra characters.
but really it is outclassed by other games in the genre.
probably my favourite DMC though, it's just not as fun on the first playthrough but becomes more fun once you treat it like a combo sandbox and less like a liniar story game.

I wish Nero had more than just one gun and one sword

he was versatile but paled in comparison to dante. the game felt unfinished

DMC3 with SS mod >>> DMC4 > DMC3

dmc1: clasic, completed 17x times
dmc3: fantastic combos and weapons and enemies
dmc4: ok i guess, nice songs
DMC: unique modern society style, great music for workouts

how much of the game do you spend playing as Nero? Does it just switch as some point in the story?

Or do you need to finish the game before you can play as dante?

It was great up until the point where you have to just go backwards through the same levels, then it got tedious. still a good game tho

Unfinished but has the best combat system in the series.

Half Nero, half Dante. When you switch to Dante, you basically have go through the maps in the reverse order and get to the place where Nero starts at.

Dante's combat system is really good so if you enjoy fucking around with it then it's great. Otherwise it's just okay, DMC1 and 3 are far better choices because they have better levels, enemies and bosses as well as being more challenging games. DMC4 is a rushed mess.

>when people still think DMC5 is happening

I see. Thanks

DMC4 is about on par with DMC1 or above it depending on if you don't or do adjust for the "of the times" perspective. DMC3 is still by far the best game in the series even if you consider it looks like shit graphically by now.

DMC4 had great combat, difficulty variety, framerate, graphics and decent music but lacked the same power in story.

Nero's arm turned into a win button for him, making Nero so simplistic a toddler could get good with him. Dante meanwhile felt the same as he did in DMC3 except with all the options he should've originally had. The problem is, there were no clever changes streamlining his ridiculously large arsenal. Sure, it made the masters of the game look amazing but it's like Dante was too complex to balance out Nero being too simple. Too many extremes there probably left intermediate players discontented. I felt that way a bit.

That and the story in DMC3 was just more gripping, complex and had that family element to Vergil.

The general consensus is that it has the best gameplay, but DMC1 and 3 outdo it in almost evry other way, although just having better gameplay is enough for some people to consider to their favorite.

Personally, I think Dante is more fun to play as in DMC3. The enemies in DMC4 don't feel designed for him at all, and while it's fun to just do a crazy combo on a single scarecrow with Dante in DMC4, playing the game normally is a lot less fun. I also missed crazy combos, Quicksilver and Doppelganger.

Vergil is more fun in DMC4 though, if too overpowered.

To add to this, DMC4 made you backtrack through the same damn dungeons in most of the Dante half of the game. That seemed cheap on Capcom's part, they can afford to invest more in a major game release than that. No matter how pretty they make it, gamers want a full game of new content, not half.

DMC 4 is a decent game that was unfortunately not completely done. And it shows.

Even the SE was only okay. With Virgil of course being the highlight of the whole thing. But OP just finish DMC4 once then play BP like everyone else.

>then play BP like everyone else
BP?

Bloody Palace.

They probably just spent more on the 10 levels you see in the game rather than have 20 levels. That's not technological magic, that's just bad accounting.

It's really mediocre but fun.

DMC4 combat is a mess. Dante has too many weapons. Instead of switching between two he has 4 melee and 3 ranged (and Pandora has multiple forms). It makes his combos look absolutely retarded. He just do random attacks with different weapons. Lucifer looks especially stupid since it designed arond dance moves which should be used in a string to look "cool" but when you bring another weapon out of your ass just to do a small part of "dance" it looks just weird. Having too much is a bad idea. Vergil worked in DMC3 because you had only one ranged weapon and each of your weapons are available with single button press.

Speaking of weapons, DMC3 had a much much better arsenal. Rebellion is a bit worse in DMC4 because no Sword Pierce. Gilgamesh is just poor man's Beowulf and Lucifer is just a bad designed weapon. It's fun but it doesn't work in such system. You can do neat setups with it but it's just too gimmicky to use properly. Nevan as weapon from the same "weird" niche worked so much better. And that's it, while DMC3 also has two more devil arms. They didn't expand weapon movesets and they even made them worse in some regards. The only original melee weapon is too damn weird and looks stupid in combos. No progress here.

Styles were nerfed.
>w-well that's because Dante would've been too OP with old styles!
So? Vergil is absolutely OP and nobody complains. Again, they didn't add anything worthwhile. Instead they removed moves from styles and pretty much force you to switch. You can no more do cool shit with gunslinger only because guns suck, there're no fun moves like Wild Stomp and no fun ranged weapons. Again, Pandora is neat but too gimmicky and create even more mess with DMC4 Dante infinite arsenal. How about reworking style so they affect gameplay much more? Changing not only one button but bigger part of your moveset? How about making new cool shit for styles? No? Just nerf my shit up and remove fun moves. That's it. No progress here.

DMC4 combat is overrated.
