News journalism is both hard to break into and relatively difficult work once you're actually in. It requires a modicum of people skills, long work hours to get a story and is highly competitive. They don't have enough talent or credentials to review films or music, because those industries actually have at least a small amount of integrity and will blackball a reviewer who obviously has no talent and no knowledge of the subject matter. Games journalism has none of these barriers to entry.

On top of this, it becomes easier and easier to fill the review sites with people like them once one person like this is hired, because he'll recommend his other journalism school rejects every time a position opens. So they slowly filled up all of them

True that an art critic needn't have any high art skills but he does need enough knowledge on the subject matter to identify concepts, techniques and other relevant properties, which involve a history of the medium, periods where techniques and styles were used and names of people who are prominent in the field. Polygon is among some of the most corrupted I've seen. I'm pretty sure they were paid to give great reviews. Sim City was given a 9.5 before the game was even out and people found how broken it was to the point that the servers didn't even work for a month after game came out.

At what point do we arrive at the definitive male or female? Or if the lighting system is broken so you have to turn your TV brightness up to max to even see anything, and it's all washed out and garbage looking. I bought games based on scores back in the N64 days and it never let me down.
