We discussed the trolley problem in my Critical Thinking course recently.

It was the lever scenario and then we also discussed the fat guy scenario. We were trying to figure out what the difference was, and why people would pull the lever and not push the fat guy. I spoke up and said that it was about cause and effect.

When you pull the lever, you're saving the 5 people, but the consequence is killing a person. The cause is saving 5 people, the effect is killing the other person. When you push the fat guy, you're killing the fat guy in order to save the 5 people. The cause is killing the fat guy, the effect is saving 5 people. The difference in the order of cause and effect is where the problem arises. I proposed that people were unwilling to kill someone IN ORDER to save people, but weren't unwilling to save people and have someone else die because of it.

Everyone looked at me like a retard and I think they all hate me. The Ph.D professor sort of laughed and went, "okay, what if the fat guy is on a trapdoor that you pull the lever for and you drop him onto the track", which still doesn't solve the problem of cause and effect.
