I haven't played Half Life 2. What happens during this sequence, exactly?

It's just a tutorial segment that teaches you how to pick up shit, nothing particular happens.

Half-Life 2 was the premier "physics" based game. In the intro sequence, a guard knocks an empty soda can off the rim of a trash can and he tells you to pick it up and put it in the trash. Just the act of being able to "pick something up" effortlessly in a game was pretty amazing back in the day, let alone physically throwing it in a trash can accurately or across the room to spite him (or in his fucking face) only to have the AI react uniquely either way. He clubs your face in, if you throw it at him.

Basically it was a remarkable physics demonstration where not only do you have fluid control over objects in the environment, but the AI reacts to it accurately as well. The rest of the game was basically an impressive physics demo (and also a good first person shooter).

The Gravity Gun makes a bit more sense now.

The Gravity Gun is just there to demonstrate the physics engine.

The entire level of Ravenholm is a physics demo. It's a really good one though.

Try the game if you have the chance. I'm not gonna say it's a masterpiece, but it's a really nice time capsule.

Nah. Guns look and sound like toys. Shooting mechanics are garbage. I have never seen pistol/SMG being so weak and unsatisfying to use.
