How is BG1 better written? If you break it down, it's actually much more basic, from the starting motivations, companions (if you can call them that. They have no character development whatsoever) to the main villain.

The only problem with BG2's writing is Irenicus and anything related to Bhaal. The rest of it is great.

That is a load of shit. Sarevok is far better written than Irenicus. Irenicus is just some faggot elf with the thickest plot armor known to man and the most basic power grabbing imaginable, while Sarevok had a progression of increasing subterfuge and control up to such an extent that you have assassins thrown at you the whole game, all the iron is fucked up by his bandits, all his rival merchants were eaten by doppelgangers, he has nearly taken over the throne, he tricked the city guard, he is running a massive slave ring, etc. He actually has realistic means of carrying out his goals and his forces appear overwhelming. Sarevok gave the player a feeling that he was actually relevant, because he was basically involved in every single event throughout the entire game. He is just that much of a dick. Irenicus on the other hand just wings everything because hurr I'm the most powerful mage ever I can do anything, I don't need to plan out anything ever and you just need to pretend it makes sense.

F/M/T is overpowered at first then their leveling slows to a crawl and ruins the midgame, but pick up again in ToB.

Dual Kensai(13)/Mage (my personal favourite), and Beserker(13)/Mage are both disgustingly overpowered once they finish dual classing and if you're smart about it they'll have far less downtime than F/M/T. Just make sure to learn a pile of scrolls when you dual class, and you'll only have a level or two of grinding left.

Fighter13/Thief is great for backstabbing fun: max out open locks quickly and leveling up the Thief gets far easier. I recommend using Quarter Staff (Staff of the Ram +6).

Wild Mage is pure chaos, but difficult.

All Paladin toolkits are pretty great. Undead Hunter is great for a cozy play-through of SoA.

Depends on how you play it and how much of it you play.

If you're doing a full run of the trilogy and explore literally every map, then it very well could take 150 hours.

If you're racing through the game with a great class and skipping extra content then it's likely possible to do it in something closer to 50 hours.

Inquisitors cast Dispel Magic at TWICE their actual level. Meaning a level 10 Inquisitor can reliably dispel the protections of a lich.

Neera is quite okay. She is certainly better than Aerie, and a lot of people find Aerie okay as well. The biggest selling point of EE npcs are the abundance of voiced lines. So I certainly appreciated that. Her romance also ties in with the new quests and locations, which EE adds plenty. So just for those new content alone, I recommend playing EE. Remember, you can still mod EE and just skip whoever you find annoying.

Well, the easy option is to download the EE version since it has all the mandatory mods installed right away and you can skip all the added content if you want. If you want to be a purist, then download the original games, the patches, the expansions, TuTu or BG trilogy, the fixpack and the tweak pack.

Except I'd recommend not downloading Ascension or SCS. If you install everything in their specific order then it'll work perfectly. Any custom NPC mods or whatever should be downloaded and installed after everything else.

I would personally recommend that, since the entire series is de facto a trilogy (BG1 - BG2 - Throne of Bhaal).

You can also import your character from BG1 to BG2, get some bonus items and so on.

BG2 takes you on a completely different journey and it isnt until Throne of Bhaal that you get back to the storyline BG1 setup.

Baldur's Gate 2: SoA is a fantastic standalone game and imho a better entry-point for a first play-through. Then after that if you had fun, try out the full trilogy.

Basically all of the relevant plot from BG1 is told again in SoA anyway, so you won't be feeling lost.

If you're up for it, then do feel free to start at the beginning though. Some people prefer 1.

Actually, you don't need to keep that spot free during the entirety of BG2. Just kick the last person out before entering the final chapter or fight (and before you import your party to Throne of Bhaal)

It has a few extra flashback scenes that might be jarring, and there are a few unnecessary extra dialogue options thrown in which no sane person would take, but if you can push that aside, I honestly think you'll have a good time with it.

It adds a surprisingly large amount of banter that fits in well with the game, and feels roughly as well written as the main romances imho. Some people use that mod purely for the extra banter it provides.

I am a boring-ass purist tho. Even for BG1/EasyTutu, I just used her BG2 portrait (for better continuity) that was slightly edited - no scar and made her look a bit more happy, since I thought it would fit her BG1 cheery attitude before she got all doom and gloom in the second game.

For BG2 I just sticked with her vanilla portrait to simulate some obvious progress of her personality/looks.

I agree, but Blade offense is more based on outrageous numbers of physical attacks with Celestial Fury/Crom Faer/both than what spells they can sling. You could argue that makes them a poor man's Kensai/Mage (probably true), though the latter lacks the traps to cheese large fights and UAI.

Fighter you'll probably want to dual at level 13 so you get max attacks per round, though hitting L14 on a druid is pretty disgusting. F/D is usually multi instead of dual for that reason.

T/M dual is usually at L7 if you just want to get the crucial open locks/disarm traps sorted, and L9, L11, or L13 if you want more backstab multipliers and non-shit stealth.

I'm that guy who comes along and points out that the Bard's Blade toolkit is OP.

First, you compare his spellcasting to a Mage's. Since he levels faster (usually a full level ahead of a Mage), he's generally much stronger throughout the early and mid game. For example, at 40,000xp a single class Mage is level 6 while a Bard is level 7. They both have access to all 1-3rd level spells, but a Bard's Fireball would do 7d6 compared to a Mage's at 6d6, or the Bard having four Magic Missiles compared to the Mage's three.

This is on top of the fact that the bard is getting a maximum of 8hp/level compared to a Mage's 6hp/level and the fact that a Bard can equip weapons like bows to fill the gap between spells.

Of course, in terms of melee capability, the Blade is the equal to a Fighter as well. The class grants dual-wielding pips and with a Kundane + Belm combo, you're up to five attacks a round when you activate Offensive Spin. Now, even if you didn't give yourself a good Strength at character creation, or didn't bother with a Belt or Gauntlets to raise it... hell, even if you're not an alignment to get an innate Bhaalspawn ability to raise Strength, as a Bard you have the second level spell to set your Strength to 18/50. And in the end when you pop Offensive Spin, all five of those attacks are for maximum damage with a huge Strength output. That alone will generally take him above and beyond your average Fighter, not even accounting for defensive spells like Stoneskin, Mirror Image, Polymorph Slime, Improved Invisibility or any of the other great invincibility options.

So, we gather that a Blade is better than a Mage or a Fighter individually, but what about combined? Kensai / Mage is probably the most popular and loudly touted combination. And while it's competitive, what you're really trying to accomplish with it is to create a Blade without actually being a Bard.

Now, the Kensai's bonus to damage is really nothing compared to the Blade's Offensive Spin ability. Especially since most people are only dipping into the class and progressing Mage. The lack of being able to wear armor, gauntlets or bracers tends to gimp his AC and requires him to lean heavily on spells. Whereas the Blade has access to the excellent Bard armors in the game (which allow spellcasting while worn), and can even stack EBS and Defensive Spin to pull a -20 buff to his AC late game. That's good enough that even the long lamented "auto-hit" enemies of Throne of Bhaal consistently begin missing again.

Some people will chime in with "What about the Kensai's Kai ability! That does maximum damage like Offensive Spin, AND it stacks with his Kensai buffs to damage!" The thing with the Kai ability is its once a day. Offensive Spin is 1/day per four levels, and you're in a single class kit that levels rapidly. You could conceivably Offensive Spin 10 times between resting to the Kensai's 1, by end game.

All that said, in the end your Mage will surpass the Blade in spellcasting, even with the XP lost in the Kensai levels and the Bard's superior progression. But by the time you start casting Time Stop, Horrid Wilting and summoning in Pit Fiends and Cacofiends, your Kensai levels become more flavor and largely a wasted XP drain on your Mage progression. Fights are determined by your end-level spells, not a mix of sword and sorcery like they were mid-level and still are for the Blade. Even your HLAs are more just summoning Dark Planetars to fight for you, while the Bard's Use Any Item, Greater Evasion and Enhanced Bard Song all fit into the melee caster milieu you're going for.

So, the Blade is the better caster and fighter throughout the meat of the game, and end-game is representative of the concept much better than the Kensai / Mage ends up being.

Once you get UAI use the scarlet ninja-to instead of Belm or Kundane

I find the strength bonus and damage output of Crom Fayer + Scarlet Ninja-To works better than using two extra-attack granting weapons.

Yeah no, acid arrows use to inflict 2-7 dmg +2-12 acid damage but in 2 it's 2-7 dmg +1-3 acid damage

Haven't tried the others, but the de'Arnise romance doesn't. Damn shame too, given that it's a very well-crafted and mature mod.
