So is Tomb Raider 2013 actually any good...

So is Tomb Raider 2013 actually any good? Put it off because I thought it was female uncharted but apparently it's less of a railroaded cinematic experience and more of a metroidvania with pretty gud gameplay? Thoughts?

Pls I need to know if Lara is worth $7.

>I hate tombs!

it's uncharted with stronk womyn and no, it's metroidvania

It's an alright adventure game and not a bad purchase at less than $10. Remember that Lara in this game hasn't gone on any adventures yet so she's not used to killing a bunch of people.

It's female uncharted.

Maybe it's something you like, but for me personally, I couldn't even get past the first hour. It's just too easy and boring.

>Remember that Lara in this game hasn't gone on any adventures yet so she's not used to killing a bunch of people.
Oh, you...

I'm down for a gears of war-like featuring qt Lara. Just need to know if the combat is significantly better than uncharted/asscreed/all that other garbage.

TR2013 is basically: Roam around some tube/arena thing, kill people with boring third person cover mechanics, WHOA BIG EXPLOSION NOW GOING DOWNHILL, kill more people, alibi "riddle", kill more people, MORE DOWNHILL AND EXPLOSION WOW LOOK HOW CINEMATIC!

Uncharted is good and so is this.

TLOU bored me out of my mind and from the opinions here so will this. Shame because ROTTR looks stupid pretty too.
Wish they would expand on the exploration and make platforming more challenging/engaging rather than focusing on cinematic action set pieces.

Its square's arkham saga

>nu-males think whiny baby Lara is better than literally the best Lara

Concerning exploration and platforming:
It has about a handful of "graves" with platforms and riddles.
It has steps and climbable shit.
And I 100%'d it in around 17 hours according to Steam, without any guide whatsoever.

TLOU isn't like Uncharted.

wow, Cred Forums really does rot ones mind.

just look at all these terrible opinions and buzzwords

Pretty meh games only play it for qt lara

I'm sorry you haven't read enough books/watched enough films that you consider a mediocre straight-to-dvd tier movie game good. I play for gameplay first and everything else second and TLOU gameplay is dogshit.
Also i'm a 4.0 gpa student set up with a 100k salary job as soon as I graduate so I think my mind is in a pretty good place :^)

...

>female uncharted

how fucking young are people on here?

Uncharted is a male Tomb Raider

It was meh, but better than Uncharted
Also "Literraly one tomb that was already raided: the game"

It's basically a slightly more open Uncharted if that makes any sense. I'd say an apt comparison is to how Uncharted 4 did wandering around. Story is terrible though, and so is the characterization for Lara.

>Kills a deer
>Nearly pukes
>Kills a guy who tried raping her a couple hours later.
>Has a problem with it
>Gets a grenade launcher a couple hours after the guy tried raping her.
>Proceeds to wholesale slaughter everyone and near the end just goes full Rambo and has no moral quandaries about killing anyone.

>Gets impaled on her side
>Proceeds to go through a body of water filled with rotting corpses seconds later.
>Proceeds to climb stuff
>They she gets her leg caught in a bear trap and recovers after five seconds without any sort of bandaging or anything.
>Finally meets her old friend who can't even walk because he got bit by a single wolf and Lara, who still has a gaping wound in her side along with the leg either broken or heavily damaged by the bear trap goes to fetch medicine from a wolf den.
>Proceeds to climb stuff for ages with the open wound
>Goes to what is basically a favela and rolls around in the mud with said open wound and falls into mud-filled water
>Only after she falls down does her wound start to hurt her and she proceeds to cauterize it.

Bugged the crap out of me the whole game.

well after the reboot tombraider become female uncharted
unless tomb raider gameplay was anything like uncharted (mind you i haven't played a tomb raider since 3)
played the reboot and..think i should have gone back and played anything else

I don't think you used enough buzzwords

I stopped reading at "movie game".

Try again and maybe I'll read it then.

don't believe Cred Forums, ever, It's a good game.

I'd say seven buckaroos isn't too bad of a price for this game. I definitely say no if was full priced.

Go for it but don't expect it to be mind blowing.

Half the game is padded with cutscenes and climbing and there are no tombs

in RotTR half the game is padded with cutscenes and climbing but there are tombs

Oh and she doesnt fucking stop talking to herself

Good gfx but I uninstalled

Yes.

Decent story.

Decent gameplay.

Tons of fucking BRUTAL death scenes.

She is almost raped but then he just laughs and shots her in one of them.

Fucking Metal.

It's okay, very forgettable and filled with modern trends of videogames, but it's not bad.

Gameplay is passable, you have some shooting and some dodge then press melee to hit moments.

The problem of TR2013 and Rise is that they are too safe, extremely safe games for the modern times.

Uncharted is better but it's still pretty good.

>less of a railroaded cinematic experience and more of a metroidvania
>metroidvania
Do you even know what the fuck that word means?

It really only seems to be a Metroidvania if you want it to be. I played it through without backing up once.

>numale
there's that word again....

>So is Tomb Raider 2013 actually any good?
No, it's a total travesty, an insult to the original games that valued thinking and exploration over generic cover shooting and stealth kills that reward generic upgrade tree unlocks. Play the first 4 TR games instead of this shit.

Found the nu-male...

anyone who spouts "cinematic experience" is just a shitposter

I doubt he know what Metroidvania is.

To expand on that though, I really liked it. Would recommend, definitely for seven dollars.

Yes. The world is generally consisted of linear sections but there are multiple paths (some of which are unlocked by some sort of weapon/item acquired later in the game) through each section. There are also many branching secrets in each section some of which are usually unlocked again through weapons and items found later in the game.

Kill yourself shitstain.

just because I'm wearing 17 flannel shirts and no shoes doesn't make me a numale

feministfrequency.com/donate/

Nah I think it's OK but it's almost 100% railroaded from start to finish.

it has some cool moments

Better put the scene on that cable car, it has the stupid climbing shit AND the cover shooting. That way you can encompass the whole game in one single scene.

all of the originals aged like total shit

All I remember was that it has the most fluid move-to-cover mechanic ever. It's a thoughtless process and very welcome in combat.

That and Lara dying in gruesome ways gave me lots of weird boner moments for some reason.

The game's decent. I personally think it's better than Uncharted.

...

As someone who hates Uncharted games, I honestly think TR2013 was an improvement in many ways.

>It's linear, but unlike Uncharted you can actually revisit areas and do optional side shit.

>Combat encounters are balanced and enemies aren't a bunch of bulletsponges that take 50 headshots to kill.

>You can carry more than two guns at a time and they all have good feedback.

>Climbing is more organic and there is at least some risk of failure when jumping across ledges.

It's basically Uncharted, if it was made by competent developers.

kill YOURself butthurt shitposter

>translation: I'm a butthurt nostalgia cuck

You could've just said so.

>cuck

Your opinion is instantly disregarded once you start spouting off buzzwords.

yeah, the game is fun, but the story is fucking retarded

Not at all, they're still extremely satisfying to play through. The levels are massive and full of fun puzzles and stuff to discover, how can that "age"?

bought the game for £10 worth getting full price, plays really well, good story its great to have a real lara croft game again, get the definitive edition though it has way better graphics

>As someone who hates Uncharted games

nu-male is a buzzword, I'm just doing what you're doing :^).

I didn't like Uncharted 2 (the only one I've played) but I thought the new TR was pretty fun. Calling it a Metroidvania is overselling it though.

It does offer a more organic gameplay than uncharted, you have a few tools and elements in the environment where you can use them and the rest is up to you. It's still very scripted at times but you kind of get the illusion that you are in control, unlike uncharted where you can only use the *designated platforming ledges* and if you try on some other random part of the level it just won't work.

There's a bit of backtracking involved, a few optional "tomb" areas that are just one single pretty simple puzzle every time. The combat is exactly what you would expect it to be. Story-wise it's nothing ground breaking but I thought the progression of Lara from weak terrified science girl to indiana janes works pretty well.

I wouldn't have bought it full price but for $20 or less I think it's worth a try, I'd still wait for a sale though.

Not really. I'm sure you fit 90% of this. Meaning that it isn't a buzzword and is fact.

nice image, cuck.

but literally none of that is fact.

>ad-hominem

keep telling yourself that.

Don't you have to help your wife prep a bull or something?

If I've dated a trans woman in the past and I'm currently in an open relationship with my (cis) girlfriend am I a numale?

the 1st part of the game is good. Then it becomes generic/casual/boring/repetitive action game.
The second part is full uncharted.

Nice projection, cuckold.

I only exclusively watch interracial porn (african american male/white female) am I a cuck?

kek

Her progression didn't bug me too much, I took it like an Indiana Jones game, it's not really meant to be realistic. Lara is a superhero of sorts, she can survive things that would kill a regular human being.

The thing that was a bit jarring to me was when she meets with her friends at several points in the story. Everytime it looks like they've been mostly fine while she was fighting hordes of savages and rapists. I guess she's been very unlucky.

No. You're bisexual.

well this is certainly very entertaining

Do that to any game and it will look dumb.

this, it's supposed to be a pulpy adventure.

Fuck you, I'm a numale you cuck

Tomb raider was nice alright game but is very terrible for a second play though tho. The end game content is just a boring collectaton with pathetic one room tombs that were locked because you lack the items to progress. I can't stand lara and her constant moaning. The bitch kills over 1000 men through out the game and still shakes in fear for some odd reason. The story is terrible but island had some strange lore to it that kept me interested to it to the very end.

>dates confused man
>dates woman
Sounds bisexual to me.

NO, Cred Forums says I'm a NUMALE
REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

>kills over 1000 men through out the game and still shakes in fear
I think it's endearing.

I liked it far more than any of the Uncharted games, besides 4 since I haven't played that. Combat wise too. It's pretty short though and there's not a whole lot to do in the hub worlds, but I definitely found it fun

They're not mutually exclusive, friend. Most "nu-males" probably describe themselves as bisexual or pansexual anyways, because that's "progressive".

>too safe
The games are actually pretty violent, it's not every AAA game where you get to see your female protagonist impaled on spikes or mauled by wolves.

Yeah that's gaming in the modern age unfortunately. But at least the entire gameplay isn't like this unlike some games these days. Not that I want to overhype it, I'd say it's a solid 6/10, play through it once and never touch it again.

I'm pretty sure you could have to kill people to survive in an extremely hostile environment and still be in complete shock when you realize what you're doing. It didn't really bother me, actually it helped humanize her for me. I prefer that than the protag in many action games who will murder hundreds of people and then behave like nothing happened.

WatchDogs come to mind, I always thought the personality of the protagonists in this game was completely at odds with what the gameplay has you do. "Hey little Bobby, I'm so sad your sister died, I still feel guilty about it to this day. BTW I just ran over a dozen people coming here because I took a shortcut through the park."

It's basically a game that has great production values and everything the executives demand from a game, but in the midst of looking for the largest possible audience, they forgot to make it fun.

If you want to see what video game trends were popular in 2013, play Tomb Raider 2013.

If you want a good and fun game, play something else.

>violence isn't safe
Kids these days love shooting people in CallofDuty

Jonah is unironically the best character in both games.

I think he meant it's too easy.
Basically you can't fail. Sure, you can jump into doom, but you have to be a really, really dumb retard for that to happen more than once or twice.

Call of Duty isn't violent at all, there's barely any gore outside the Treyarch games, and even then it's extremely tame and mild.

Those games genuinely deserve a T raiting.

Tomb Raider is pretty fucking brutal compaired to Call of Duty.

>shooting, stabbing and calling artillery strike on people ain't violent
Yeah it's not as gory as some death scenes from Tomb Raider, but it's quite violent to call for an artillery strike and level a fucking building, killing so many people you can't even count. Violence goes beyond just blood and impaled skulls.

Violence has been mainstream in games since Mortal Kombat, it's hardly a risky thing to add to your game.

You know what would be risky? If they expanded on the platforming system and added momentum to it, sprint jumps and things to diversify it. Instead what this user posted is right, Lora 2013 and Rise are shining examples of just doing what games do these days.

I get that she can survive it because she's the star, but it just bothered me that she was able to shrug all these things off while her friend nearly dies due to a simple infection on his leg, especially when they were trying to play some(not all) things up as realistic enough.

this desu

Yeah that bugged me too, but another completely trivial thing that bugged me was the fact that she was wearing a tank top throughout the whole fucking game, even when she climbed to the mountain top, without even complaining about it being cold or anything the whole time. That annoyed the shit outta me.

Violence like artillery strikes isn't that looked down upon, Shadow the Edgehog destroys an entire city and blows up the White House yet still has an E10+ raiting.

Gore is much more risky then action violence.

While the game isn't challenging that's not the problem, the problem of both new tomb raider games is that they lack something to stand out, the whole "run forward or else the floor falls", the shooting and platforming don't really do anything that stands out from other games that have those elements. Or that hunting gimmick, or the crafting that feels like a chore in Rise.

I don't think those games are bad, they're no No Man's Sky, that's for sure. But then they're just competent enough to keep me playing the game until the end.

I already forgot a lot of TR because it really is something you shut down your brain, play it then you quickly forget about it.

While it has some gnarly death scenes, lots of people already saw people having their spines pulled out in a fatality or such. Hatred was extremely fucking edgy and only some media outlets fell to that bait game. Also Manhunt has got to be one of the most violent games I've ever seen, suffocating enemies with plastic bags, and those killing animations were very well done, you could hear the bones cracking after the bat hits.

Violence simply isn't a barrier to be broken in vidya anymore. Most people don't pay that much attention to it, it's like hey a gnarly dying scene of Lara impaled, now let's go back to climbing walls and shooting dudes.

I don't remember a part in Indiana Jones where he got gaping open wounds and then murdered dozens of people. That comparison would be apt if Lara took perilous situations the same way Indie does (ie. without a scratch) but the developers wanted the game to be "adult" so they put a load of gore in, causing the tonal whiplash.

>tonal whiplash

The game is consistently dark. There's no real quips or light hearted banter.

Cred Forums is too young even for the first reboot.

>Humanized characters

I'm trying to play Tomb Raider Legend now, I just can't get into it. The platforming is like a much shittier Sands of Time, and the shooting is bad too. Not sure where the fun begins. Maybe I should've started with the PS1 era ones. Or are they in the same page as Legend Anniversary and Underworld?

>good

No, it's a generic TPS with pretty hair physics if your card can handle it.

I played it recently. It's has it's moments but it's not a real tomb raier game.
It's a square Enix gmes which mens you'll go through plenty of QTEs an overscripted events wich you do.
It has really goo gunplay but tomb raier was about solving puzzles and platforming which in this game is pretty much non existant and dumbed down.

If you want a real tomb raier experinece with decent graphics go play Tomb Raider Undderworld, Tomb Raider Legends and Tomb Raider Anniversary.

It's worth, but if you're looing for a Tomb Raiedr experience you won't have it.
Think of it more like Hitman Absolution

My first 3D game fap was Lara on the Dreamcast.

Exquisite.

My friend. So do I. Can't get enough of it. Well, I don't *exclusively* watch that king of porn. But it's definitely 90% of my fap material at this point. Who doesn't like watching big black men blow out tight white pussy?

>not MUH tomb raider

I guess you just want a rehash instead of something new for the franchise.

You have too serious approach for these games. Just gaze at Lara doing cool thing.
>PS1 era ones
They are way more platforming-based.

My only issue is the side characters and dropping the entire idea of hunting for survival. I bet you this game would look pretty great on the FOX engine.

If i fucking loved pop 08 will i enjoy this?

its a good third person shooter/uncharted type clone

it does not capture the feel of tomb raider

It's inferior to Uncharted in literally every aspect, but since it's multiplatform and not a Sony exclusive I guess we're all going to pretend it's better out of spite.

this

*it's NOT a metroidvania

you can look around a bit more and revisit places so that's one thing it has over uncharted. but otherwise i agree.

>literally ripping of uncharted
>something new

if its a metroidvania it is in the absolute loosest sense of the term. its a pretty standard TPS. basically just uncharted, much more violent, a little less linear with substantially shittier writing.

It's worse than every single Uncharted game, but it's still an ok TPS.

yeah it's absolutely worth $7

this nu-gamer attitude is killing all the good series.

developers approaching sequels as reboots instead of building on what they already have and making it better

when a sequel's biggest similarity with the previous game is the name it might as well be a new IP

>The games are actually pretty violent
Rise isn't. Too many people cried after seeing Lara get the shit beat out of her in the first reboot.

Wait, so nu-males are also bullriders?

That's pretty metal.

It's uncharted but with more gameplay and a lesbian main character m

Cred Forums has called me a numale a whole bunch of times and I used to do bronc riding before I fucked up my back years ago

no one is manly enough to not be a numale cuck sjw on Cred Forums, it's kind of fun

When did it become ok to call adventure games metroidvania? Millennial's first tomb raider

So the entire point of bronc riding is to last 8 seconds right?

Can you try to go for longer or is there no point?

I've seen it on some ESPN channel and looks pretty metal but not sure of the finer details.

Also, Texas Buyers Club was cash.

No point in hanging on longer unless you've fucked up (stuck in the saddle etc)

You're scored on your form during the 8 seconds and how well you handle the bucking

Ohhhhh, you're scored on form and how well you handled the bucking.

I like it a lot more now since any asshole can get lucky every so often and stay on for the full 8 seconds but look like shit.

I'm just too old and it's too dangerous for me.

I'm 31 and winter is coming.

The new Tomb Raider games are much better than Uncharted.

Uncharted has a fun story that is fun to watch but the shooting is boring.

Tomb Raider is fun.

>>You can carry more than two guns at a time and they all have good feedback.
You actually carry every gun you got in the game all the time

I just finished Rise and I think it was an improvement over the reboot. At least it had some tombs in it.

They're still both mediocre AAA shit though.

There are definitely riders into their 30s and even 40's but they've been super lucky

I'm 28 (and was an awful rider) and have broken both my legs and am probably going to need some sort of lower back surgery at some point in the future

I'm definitely going to pay $5 for these games and play them once I get a better PC.

Also, Lara SFM is great.

>Uncharted
>since it's a Sony exclusive I guess we're all going to pretend it's better than any other game
It works in both ways.

I played it for like 8 hours and for no particular reason just stopped and haven't touched it in two years

I might try it again from the beginning but I remember there being a lot of QTE and rock climbing. Not much action

Yeah but I'm pretty unlucky and an accounting major.

One blow to the head and there goes my profession, heh.

It is totally a railroaded cinematic experience, lots of artificial drama and scripted sequences. If it's on sale give it a try but it's unlikely to be something you'll keep coming back to and sink in hundreds of hours. It's nothing like the original TR, the main character in the reboot is Lara Croft in name only.

The writing is honestly the worst I have ever seen in a game. Uncharted at least has the self aware angle. TR is completely played straight and awful. The gameplay is alright but still boring after a while. My only memory of the game is wanting it to be over.

Wow TressFX looks amazing but tanks my fps to 30 when the camera is close to Lara's hair. Wish I didn't know what it looks like because I can't handle how ugly it is without it.

you haven't played the latest bioware games then

Pretty much. I don't even remember anyone's name from the supporting cast of TR. Uncharted shines through it's characters and how they interact. UC2 is still the best game of it's type and the TR reboot doesn't even come close.

>The writing is honestly the worst I have ever seen in a game
You must not play many games
