Even if you have a long peacetime and build up that many units in a big multiplayer game, the camera and the formation controls makes it a massive pain to try to do anything with that many units.

The typical RTS camera and zoom levels don't work well for that scale, it needs to be able to zoom out as much as in that promo shot.

Sort of. When you group select they will go into a soft formation but wont stick to it once fighting starts.

Hard formations can be done if you give a them a leader and a drummer. I have no idea what the advantage of that is.

I have this love/hate relationship with Cossacks. Me and my friends used to LAN it a lot back in the day, but after a particular 19 hour game we just grew to hate it.

I gave it a try yesterday for the first time in about 15 years, and just broke down laughing when everything came back to me. The silly unit "quotes", the harpsicord riff when you click on the academy, peasants masturbating with the scythes, etc. Now I can't wait to love and hate Cossacks 3 in equal measures.

I believe they get some kind of stat boosts while in formation, plus they were easier to move. I also remember there being a hard-coded limit to formations in any given game, so johnny come latelies in multiplayer matches were shit out of luck.

GSC isn't exactly known for its professionalism. I mean, most of the bugs in Stalker were actually simple typos, that's the amount of quality control we're talking about here.

This being said, I think they actually might patch it since they do seem to be committed to develop the game further on, they patched all their previous games sufficiently enough and Sergei needs cash for his Pepsi fix but I'd rather wait and see. The game's not going anywhere.
