I love old school shooters and everything they stand for, but Dook is pretty mediocre.
He's very quotable, and certainly iconic, but later Build Engine games kinda blew it out of the water. It was neat seeing real world environments in a shooter, but that novelty has warn off. Design wise it's aged like milk.

I don't know, the last time I played it I found it surprisingly enjoyable. I liked the way it forced you to use every bit of ammunition you had.

Like what, lack of quality consistent level design? Blood is up and down all over the place and SW's levels are either the best or the abolute worst with no in between. Or how about enemy balance? Console versions removed and changed things around. 64 even changed how some of the guns worked and ammo types etc... maybe I need more English classes but I fail to see how you can call the 64 version a port and not, say, the win98 version for example?

I think you're underselling Blood (which is understandable, because people jack off a little too hard over it) but you are absolutely right, Duke has the best balance of enemies/weapons and most consistent level design. It also has considerably more verticality and creativity in the maps than Blood.

Yeah Duke Nukem 3D was fucking awesome back in the day. The reason why Cred Forums thinks it's shit is because they were too young to actually play it. All the other Duke games have been shit...except for the Apogee old side scroller which was pretty fun. Don't know if it still holds up.

Jesus man, you are so wrong, I love Blood to pieces but it just doesn't have the level design or enemy design to compete with Duke 3D.

Fanmade level packs like Death Wish are infinitely times better than the original levels (except maybe the first episode), there are some great levels in Blood but man there are a lot of bland uninteresting caves, mines, temples and castles. In regards to the enemies, they are either incredibly easy to defeat, even in overwhelming numbers, or are huge pains in the ass because of how cheap they are, like the monks draining half your health with hitscan weapons the second you notice them or the hellhounds that can kill you just by setting you on fire even with full health and full fire armour. If Death Wish were the actual release of Blood I think it would probably beat out Duke but Duke just edges it out by being so likable as a game and having better designed enemies, even if I really like a lot of the art direction Blood was taken in.

And Shadow Warrior seriously isn't even worth mentioning, it's by far the weakest Build game with guns that feel like shit, uninspired enemies and bland giant levels. I can barely bring myself to play it where I load Duke and Blood up quite a lot.

Dook is great. The only game that's better is Blood. If you unironically think RR is any better you should hang yourself.

I'm more of a quake guy, and I'm just not about the claustrophobic level design.
It's really nice being able to interact with the environment, but I still feel it's icing on a very bland cake.
I'm more a fan of open environments and dodgeable projectiles.

I just don't understand what is so hard about making a decent modern Duke game.
I've played tons of mods and they all seem to get the idea, and even to polymer HD packs, although dumb looking with classic Duke, show the design is still great.
Forever, while playable and not entirely awful, is butt ugly and doesn't feel like classic very much at all.
Why not get people who actually enjoy the game to design levels in an updated engine?
