Not that user, but I think it's not that it's bad, it just feels a tad bit like a generic third person shooter. I mean, it's a Ban Dai game, they make a lot of licensed games and some are better than others, but their overall quality is just "OK" down to mediocre and sometimes terrible. I think PS2 GITS falls into the mediocre territory. Despite that, I also loved it as a teen.
I loved everything GITS and still kinda do.

The PS1 GITS, on the other hand was developed by an in-house dev group and was published by Sony in Japan, it's a first party title.
In the west, THQ got the rights for the game (kind of like what happened with Demon's Souls, another 1st party game, published by thirds on the west). That game was genuinely unique, there's nothing quite like that game, really. Closest thing might be Geograph Seal and Jumping Flash series, both by the same developer, Exact.
Also, the appeal of having the classic FMVs done in the style of the original manga, and directed (or maybe just designed) by Shirow himself. Combine that with having one of the best techno producers take care of the soundtrack (this thanks to Sony's contacts, since Takkyu Ishino is signed to Ki/oon which is a Sony subsidiary). I remember reading an interview where he said he asked if he could bring DJ producers from Europe, like Hardfloor or Westbam and the Sony guys were like "go wild". Ended up being a huge V.A. of original tracks by lots of renowed techno producers from countries like Germany and France where the techno scene was really big in the late 90s.
That soundtrack is considered a sort of holy grail in the german techno scene.

When you compare the two of them, it's easy to understand why PS1 GITS has a cult following, but the PS2 game isn't bad.

The GitS aesthetic was heavily influenced by Hong Kong so the setting is kinda understandable.

I don't really know why you're comparing it to the Matrix either, but that movie was also very inspired by GitS so it's not much of a wonder that they'd have similarities.

I think it could still flop though. These sci-fi movies don't do that well if they don't have the marketing of a capeshit flick.

Actually that's the problem, people do NOT know the source material and will see some artsy sci-fi movie with a bunch of literally-whos and not even Scarlet's name can carry the movie to mainstream popularity.

It's not like GitS licence has any weight behind it today. The original manga's appeal was that it was a softcore porn novell by a good artist and a decent plot by 80s manga standards. The first movie is nowadays just a period piece of japanese animation during it's peak days, unless you're a big fan of symbolism, and SACs and the new one are just a above average animes thrown to cyberpunk-starved audience.

The first movie is really pretty, nice visuals and character design. The plot is interesting but it feels like there should be more too it, like it's the first episode in a series.

The second movie is pretty bad, although has some wonderfully ugly visuals that makes the world feel as disgusting as it should. The movie really just falls flat with the tedious dialogue that's just unending quotes.

I haven't watched the whole of SAC, but it feels like GiTS never reached its full potential.

SAC heavily implies that the major was one of two survivors (a boy and a girl) of a plane crash and that she got a full prosthetic body and that the antagonist of the second season was the other one. it's not explicitly stated which is which though.

finding good new animes is difficult, the market is in the same hell hole as every other big industry.

well, lets look at them together, and out of context from the rest of the films.

In the original shot The Major is in stark contrast to the background, curved and organic compared tot he worlds straight and artificial. It, in many ways looks like that of someone looking into a world, rather than looking out. The Major stands apart from the world, on the outside looking in. This plays in later with the kinship she feels with the Puppet Master as well.

In the new movie, ScarJo's Kusanagi is similarly the organic shape against the rigid and lifeless background, but this is further brought into her room as well. Along the walls we see the same straight vertical lines like outside, the rigid square shape of everything, like the buildings outside. Inside Kusanagi's apartment it is similarly bare and lifeless, lacking curves. In the new movie, she isn't on the outside looking in on the world, rather she is surrounded by a world she is not a part of. She is, largely, the only curved thing both in and out of her room.

I like the shot, and I think the new movie's version of it brings across the same message but in a slightly different way. Which to me is part of the point of an adaptation.
