Are platforms a dead genre?
Are platforms a dead genre?
on the PS4 and Xbox, yeah. On nintendo system, PC and phones, no.
They are mechanically outdated from an entertainment standpoint. They represent the remnanst of an era in which the compiter technologies were not progressed yet enough to create what people like nowday. Take a look at the most played games statistics chart and guess why not a single platformer is there.
inb4 butthurt nintenchildren coming at me
You know its the truth.
Didn't Unravel come out this year though?
Like collectathons, they have been sort of "integrated" into games
Platforming is expected as part of the gameplay now, but there are no games with platforming as the core gameplay
Which is such a shame, i'm pretty sure Nintendo would make bank if they made a "Mario 64 part 2" somewhere down the line
lol
getting crappy games and getting nothing are the same.
So yeah, it's dead. Sadly its my favorite genre (2d ones).
It's kind of oversaturated but far from being dead.
You could say the same about FPS for instance.
The problem is, platformers are pure gameplay. And we are living in an era where people think that emotional experiences and story are more important than gameplay. The genre that suffers more for this are exactly platformers. Developers are too focused on making stories than creating functional and original gameplay mechanics or good level design.
>crappy games
prove it.
>If corporate data doesn't show X genre is popular then it's probably a dead genre!
No genre is ever dead, in "today's market" all you have to do is make a game and throw it into the crowd, if it's good then people will keep buying it.
Damn, I couldn't have worded this any better.
Everything except MOBAs and shit like Gone Home is a dead genre OP.
I don't consider those kirby/yoshi borefests good.
On nintendo platforms there's only one franchise that keep getting quality releases: DK. I'd say mario also gets a pass, but it's debatable.
On pc there's shovel knight, which is amazing, and maybe two or three. I admit I don't know many recent pc games, but I didn't remember announcements of things like action platformers.
Also, isometric anything is long dead.
...
Hype.
>shovel knight
Ducktales Remastered and Castle of Illusions remake are superior games
hopefully so more people can actualyl start playing games that take skill and bring out true gamers like fighting games
3D, yes.
I wish 2D was dead.
Both have slippery controls.
Ducktales remastered has some hitbox issues and CoI remake has input lag.
I liked them. But I'd say they're both 7/10 at best.
Not really, dkc tf was fun and so was 3d world. Maybe you got tired of the genre or you just didn't liked it that much.
We need more 3d 2d platformers .
Nope.
>not based on S3&K
trash
>Ape Escape 4 never
...
see
Mario 64 had very little actual platforming present, friend.
nope even 3d platformers are coming back
This
Video games are a perfect exemple of a medium stagnating for the fact that most people in it aren't even interested about it.
This is why LP's are big, because they would rather watch someone else play a game and sometimes aren't even watching Lets Plays for the game but rather the person playing it.
This is a good thing if you work in the industry because it means that you can do something that sounds awful and yet ends up well because these people are clueless at the point where they can't tell what is good or bad for a costumer to do or how many times have certain games turn out to be bad.
Wish more people read stuff like this instead of just argue about censorship on a shitty weeb game
