But there was one thing we all had in common. We all fucking hated winter. Because winter meant everything died. So one commonality through most of Europe is that our ancestors developed festivals of thanksgiving and celebration regarding the harvest. Also included were ceremonies relating to paying respect to the spirits of the dead, and welcoming them back to Earth for one night of festivity.
And then the Catholics preserved it when they spread because assimilating pagan customs was easier than annihilating them. And they tried to turn it into a festival regarding saints to cover themselves (hence the name and November 1st being All Saints Day), but Halloween itself persevered.
