The art style is the best part.

It is derivative and unoriginal. Looks like Firewatch, looks like That Dragon, Cancer, looks like a dozen other indie games that have come out recently. Why did they choose that particular style? Not because it enhances anything, rather it is cheap and requires little skill. That is why you see it in so many games. Add The Witness to that list, although it was done mildly better.

That's a terrible price. The House in Fata Morgana is only $5 more than that and is between 20-30 hours long to read. And at least it was an original story with some good music. Where are these indie devs getting their prices from? I can buy alot of classic games on Steam, like Fable, for $10.

Yeah I can admit that at least Until Dawn had some actual well timed gameplay, although it was mostly "stay still" and QTEs. Was much better handled than TT games QTE's or this one in that department.

The stupid thing is if you you want to use a game to tell a story, why not make a graphical adventure? Or make a first person exploration, the key word there being EXPLORATION? Make the character work for the story. Even if the game isn't hard it's still a game. The problem with most walking simulators is that there's very little exploration or player input. You don't need combat but you need something, whether that be intricate dialog options, puzzles, collect-a-thons, point and click elements, etc.

The people who develop these games act like they're new. They aren't, fucking King's Quest invented QTE's 36 years ago. There are plenty of ways to have a story-driven game that doesn't feel shallow or tedious.

If anything Virginia made me appreciate Gone Home. At least Gone Home lets you move freely about the house and examine and interact with things. Virginia only has the absolute bare minimum of interactivity: you can only click things if they will advance the plot. And if you wait too long without clicking the right thing, it will advance the plot for you.

I think a delineation needs to be made between video games and interactive visual experiences. There's nothing wrong with either but calling everything a "game" leads to a lot of head butting and angsting about art and fun and shit.

Virginia has sold only around 3000 copies. That Dragon, Cancer sold like 20000. Sunset also rather hilariously sold like 25000 and the dev got mad.

Even the "successful" ones aren't blockbusters. Firewatch topped out around 350k, Gone Home barely hit 600k despite all it's controversy. The only walking simulator I can really think of that was *really* successful was the Stanley Parable with ~1.8M sold, and that was actually good.

There needed to be a distinction years ago. "Games" that have no ruleset, where you just explore or watch cutscenes, are not really games at all and should be classified as such.

A quick and easy way to determine this is whether the game has a loss state. Any game with rules has a stipulation where you lose, and obviously, if you cannot lose, you cannot win either.
Exploration games typically have no such loss state.

You can look around but that's literally all you can do. And if they really want you to look at something they will focus the camera on it and stop the ability to move it.
