So YOU have to be the one to start the game.
I like it. The game can just sit there in the title screen where you first have to press start. There's no menu icons because it's not a menu, you might not even have a pad in your hand. Maybe you left the game to boot, went to the other room and one you came back, it was there, right on the screen staring at you.

No, I just like it for the way it appears and I need no reason beyond that to.

The real reason is probably how it's a carryover from NES that was never left out (like lives for example were), probably because it's not a gameplay element and doesn't bother players.
