What went wrong?

They tried to remedy XIII's shortcomings in XIII-2 (revisiting areas, nonlinearity) rather than just doing it in the first game. They probably could have just made two games, base game and then Lighting and Serah's time travel adventures.

I enjoyed them. The story was pretty terrible admittedly but everything else was fine.

Lightning Returns has the best gameplay of the three.

I had only played FF6 but I barely remembered it when I played XIII, so with as little bias as possible, I couldn't stand how linear and pointless everything felt. There was no cohesion in the story or feel of the game, evident in weapons, characters, factions, and enemies. Although this seems to be just a "thing" with FF, it turns me off almost immediately. FF6 benefited from this because it wasn't as realistically designed as XIII. Similar games that I disparage for this practice include things like Tera: online, and Korean MMOs in general.
