I haven't upgraded in years but nowadays has it come to the point where you have to upgrade to every new generation of gfx cards to maintain 1080p60 on highest settings? I thought a 970 could last until the 1170 at least.

ATI/AMD is actually pretty bad at OpenGL, to the point where people recommend the community-made open source drivers over proprietary ones. Most AAA games don't even provide support AMD at all on OpenGL. Nvidia has typically been mandatory for Linux gaming because their drivers are close to Windows/DirectX performance.

Track racing games run well, this is more performance-intensive due to the dense foliage and cities. It's why it runs at 30fps on Xbone.

I played since the 23rd on the xbox and it runs and looks great and you can't notice the 30fps at all, but today i downloaded it for my pc thinking that i could run it at 4k easily since it ran so well on the console.

I couldn't have been more wrong the game runs terrible, you get drops all the time 1 or 2 frames might not sound like a lot but it feels like the game stops for a second making hight speed races terrible, in the city the frames go as low as 40 and even 35 making the game unplayable.

When dropping the fps on pc to 30 like the console the game feels like slow motion and everything is blurry, nothing compared to the consoles 30fps which is very playable.

Also online race was unplayable as other players have very bad rubber banding teleworking all over.

DF's point was that the frame pacing is perfect. Most games just lock to 30 but don't optimize the frametime, leading to an inconsistent experience. So 30fps still isn't optimal but Horizon 3 is probably one of the "best" 30fps games.

But I will say performance is unacceptable for this port. The recommended setting on the store page is a bold faced lie if you want to run at 60 fps. Even if you can run at 60fps, get into a race and it drops 15 frames.

It's extremely unlikely your CPU is bottlenecking you unless you're maxing out at 4k or something. i7's usually just improve minimum framerates and prevent drops, a 970 probably isn't going to push a quad core to its limits.

Forza Horizon 3 is literally a video game, and you know what? No one will EVER care about video games, ever again. That age is over. Gameplay is over. Enthusiasm is over. I think the issue is that last gen cards, which should still be powerful, are losing out to newer but similar cars in performance. There's no reason a 970 or 390 should be performing so badly compared to the 1060 and 480, this game doesn't have the DX12 or Vulkan excuse.

Late reply but Horizon 3 on Xbone has some really noticeable framerate issues at time.
Sometimes the game barely manage to keep 10fps in a race, although it's quite uncommon thankfully.

I've been playing this fucker shitbucket mode for the past 3 days.

The Falcon from mad Max is one of the barn finds. If you go to the barn to get it, the game just hangs on the cutscene.

The fix? You have to downgrade your drivers to the previous nvidia build, limp over to it at 15FPS, let the cutscene finish then save and quit, update your driver, THEN you can play.

Oh, and i'm one of the lucky ones who even got the game to start. Most people can't even get past the loading screen at the title. Just straight CTD.

And those people were lucky enough to even download the fucker completely. Windows store has been BSODing people's computers, and there's no download resume for the window's store.
