But it honest to god probably is anime of the season and one of the top 5 anime of the year (not the top slot, but top 5).
If you liked the parts of Steins Gate, either the anime or VN, where Okabe goes full PTSD and considers giving up / going rape mode / breaks down crying and shit, then you'll probably love it. It deals with a lot of that same hopelessness vibe.

That's because this year has been a particularly shitty year for anime, and the past 2 season it aired in had like 2 good shows worth following each.

Next season is 90% sport shit so it's looking even worse.

They haven't gotten far enough in the anime though to start to see the political aspects of the world. It gets more significant where the LN is.
You only get a taste of it at the end of the anime when MC's gotta go out of his way to get everyone to help with the whale / mansion invasion.

That was kind of my problem, too. Like, yeah, death probably really sucks, but there are several runs where things are completely fucked and since he doesn't know how the savepoint updates, it'd be better off to kill yourself just in case if this loop is already fucked just to be on the safe side.

Forgot to add that the biggest difference with the show is that MC is often get put in his place instead of just going all out with "fuck your rules I play by my own and still succeed" attitude other shows have.

You may enjoy Konosuba. The MC is a Hiki-Neet who becomes an adventurer then Decides it sucks, so gets rich from selling modern technology approximations in a fantasy world and lives a Hiki-Neet lifestyle there too. Literally stays in a Kotatsu until Spring.
