Kinda? Though now you've got guns, and the Hold Ups which allow for Shadow conversations or All-Out Attacks. Then there's this nice feature when you can press R1 and have an attack that an enemy is weak to automatically selected (thought you must activate it yourself). It also switched your Persona if necessary. I hear that there's also party character switching in battle later. Baton passing is also nice. If you down an enemy or enemies, you can switch to any other character that has the Baton Touch ability.

For mainline SMT, I guess try Nocturne first, or the first two if you aren't afraid of playing 1990s JRPGs. For Persona, try 3 or 4 if you can't read Nip. Persona 1 and 2 are not good examples of what Persona is nowadays, they're completely different types of games with mostly completely different mechanics, they're old school dark dungeon crawlers like SMT. They're still good (I think they're better than 3 and 4 honestly), so I still suggest giving them a shot eventually.
