>The Advertising Standards Authority has confirmed to Eurogamer that it has launched an investigation into No Man's Sky.
>The ASA investigation revolves around the Steam store page for No Man's Sky.
>The watchdog launched its investigation after receiving "several complaints" about No Man's Sky advertising, a representative told me.
>The ASA has the power to have advertisements it believes are in breach of its code of conduct withdrawn, and prevent them from appearing again. If an advertiser refuses to comply with an ASA ruling, it can impose sanctions, such as asking internet search websites to remove a marketer's paid-for search ads.
There's nothing that will come of this. If No Man's Sky is guilty of anything, it's of dealing out the same bullshit we take every year from AAA franchises and developers. I don't expect that the ASA would want to set NMS as a precedent, because that would mean they'd have A LOT of ground to cover from that point on.
Isaac Taylor
>beating a dead horse >not even anymore controversy because the devs aren't stirring the pot with b8 tweets
It's over and done.

>let the murderer get away, it's been forever since he killed that person
Leo Stewart
Fuck you, this was beyond anything we've seen before. What Sean did was criminal and he should be investigated, fuck you for being an apathetic cunt.
Camden Diaz
This is not the murder case though. Everything only generates more buzz. They already have a bad rep, so more bad rep won't do shit, except make them even more public
Adam Bennett
>comparing a video game the consumers self-hyped to the act of murder
I mean, just wow.
Austin Sanchez
No because he clarified what the game was pre launch
Hudson Bailey
Are you retarded?

They wrote a whole article on their site a day or two before it launched and Sean himself tweeted that it is not a multiplayer game
Yet people still hesitated

This doesn't do much. all of means is they'll have ads pulled. That's it. That's what their powers allow.
Wyatt Wood
The ASA is a non-governmental self-regulatory body. They don't actually have any 'official' authority beyond what the advertising industry agrees they have. They do not, and cannot, investigate companies. All they do, their entire remit, is to check whether adverts fairly and accurately represent products.
The most that can happen is the ASA gets NMS advertising pulled and possibly fines the company that produced the adverts, assuming the ASA finds those adverts non-representative.
Ryan Phillips
Better than nothing.
Jace Davis
More people could think they can get away with it, and it might not be just a small team, next time it might be Ubisoft.
Matthew Long
developer shills pollute Cred Forums now and paid marketers run amok
Tyler Rivera
Sometimes I feel sorry for Sean. It's obvious that he was like a rabbit in the headlights whenever questions were asked about his game, frozen and incapable of doing the one thing that would save him, which is to tell the truth. Then I remember that he still continued to bullshit after those two streamers didn't see each other with that PS4 release in order to keep the hype going for the PC release and I lose all sympathy.
Luke Parker
I agree the comparison was stupid and that the game was overhyped, but Sean straight up lied about it too.
Alexander James

They've already done it several times now.

I agree completely; any attempt to prevent misleading advertising is a noble pursuit. I was just pointing out that the ASA investigation has no significant ramifications for HG as OP implied; the effect is limited to removing false advertising.
APPLE >Apple has been involved in two major rulings by the ASA; its claim to be selling "the world's fastest personal computer" in 2004, its Power Mac G5 system, was judged to be unsubstantiated. Later, in August 2008, an advertisement for the iPhone was banned because of false claims that it could access "all of the Internet"—due to its lack of support of major plug-ins such as Flash.
ATHEIST BUS ADVERTS >On 21 January 2009 the ASA ruled that an advert campaign, stating "There is probably no God", did not breach the code.
>The ASA said that the British Humanist Association's campaign did not breach the advertising code or mislead consumers and that it therefore would not launch an investigation.
ISRAEL >In July 2009 the ASA banned an Israeli tourism poster following complaints. Palestine Solidarity Campaign, Jews for Justice for Palestinians and 442 members of the public complained about how the map on the poster displayed the West Bank, Gaza Strip, and the Golan Heights as part of Israel.
SOFA KING >In February 2012, the ASA ruled that the local Northampton furniture store Sofa King could not use a tagline stating that their prices were "Sofa King low" because it would be considered "likely to cause serious and widespread offense", due to its use of a pun based on a profanity. Sofa King's owner disputed these claims, saying that he had run print advertisements in a local newspaper containing the offending slogan for ten years without any complaints.
Jeremiah Bennett
>Sofa King Low
The guy deserves a medal for that tagline.

This place is always so much quicker than r/games, it lets me get shitloads of karma by sharing stuff that's hot off the presses. Thanks Cred Forums!
I used to hate Reddit but I can't browse Cred Forums at work and in the last few years they've turned me into a redditor send help
Xavier Perry
I hope they dig into his nu-male ass for all it's worth. Bleed this faggot dry and teach every other faggot indie dev a lesson.
I agree it's funny and it's a shame it got removed, but the ASA was right to err on the side of caution. We live in a world of pussies and bitches.
Arise, chicken!
Daniel Lee
They advertised their "eben graffix m8" and even then it always was always stated it's an unfinished product, which while not morally ok, it's legal. HG outright said yes to shitload of features and game mechanics, among others multiplayer, while delivering none of those, and not saying shit until the very last moment. Just because he posted a tweet about it after release doesn't make it any less outright false advertisment. Ubisoft is shady, HG are outright criminals.

I don't though, show me the rule that says you're not allowed to frequent more than one online community.
Cred Forums has been my home page for ten fucking years don't give me that "hurr reddit" bullshit you retarded axe wound. I have a government gig with a 911 center, good money but I can't go on Cred Forums. Redditors can be annoying but it's better than spending 12 hour shifts with 80% downtime sitting there with my thumb up my ass.
Jaxon Thomas
and sony?
Angel Gomez
so fucking low
Nathaniel Cruz
So in that case, he should have to refund everyone who pre-ordered the game. Which is most likely most of their sales since nobody in their right mind would buy it AFTER launch.
Asher Clark
Don't mind him, he's just trying to fit in by spouting one of the Cred Forums-approved boogeymen.
Ian Lee
Why can't you go to Cred Forums but can visit reddit?
Lincoln Edwards
haha you think you would quit twitter and that would be the end of it sean?
Austin Perez
Agreed.
Although the UK government does have an advertising standards regulatory body, I can't remember what it's called, but it's like a 'plan B' for whenever the ASA fucks up or something ridiculous happens that requires litigation or censorship or whatever.
It is very pleasing to know that independent industry organisations can self-regulate effectively. I still don't know why, for example, we still have the BBFC instead of the American style MPAA self-regulation. I mean for the most part it makes no difference, but there's no reason for the government to be involved in that shit, there's no reason for tax money to go towards that shit, and there's no reason 'underage' people should be prevented from seeing shit. It gets even more ridiculous when it comes to vidya, since we have BBFC ratings -and- ESRB ratings, totally redundant.
John Kelly
Literally means nothing.
We get investigated by the ASA all the fucking time, even if they do rule that you are advertising in a misleading way the absolute worst they do is tell you to stop saying whatever in the future.
Doesn't do Jack shit against things that have already happened, and in Hello Games case their current publicised advertising does not speak about multiplayer or anything misleading. It's their past claims which are in question and the ASA will just slap them on the wrist and say don't do that again.
Angel Jones
Old people understand BBFC ratings and can't fathom ESRB ratings. I've seen the same family buy a child 18Reds but not 18BBFCs. It was wack.
Ethan Lee
Yeah, sure, but there's nothing stopping a self-regulatory body adopting the same standards and style as BBFC ratings so that 'old people' can easily adjust.
Samuel Baker
more like GOODBYE Games
Christian Garcia
>such as asking internet search websites to remove a marketer's paid-for search ads. >asking websites to stop taking money So they can't do shit?
Carter Sullivan
user, you understand that comparisons of that sort are rarely meant to be an exact reflection of the situation right? When I say you're as gay as George Takei in a pride parade singing YMCA while wearing a double ended dildo, that doesn't actually mean you're THAT gay, it's hyperbole.
Brandon King
Colonial mareens
Bentley Ross
He followed that tweet up immediately with another one that implied that multiplayer existed but was rare, and thus that he meant that it wasn't a multiplayer FOCUSED game.
Christian Ramirez
The ASA consists of advertising companies. They have no legal authority, but they have a lot of sway.
I haven't read the article, but their remit doesn't really cover search websites, they don't have any direct influence there. But they have influence over advertising companies (since the ASA is literally made of advertising companies) so it's less 'asking search sites to remove adverts' and more 'instructing advertising companies to stop producing misleading adverts,' and given that context, there's no reason a search site would want to continue publishing misleading adverts, since the advertising agency can just stop supporting whichever search sites choose to continue displaying unapproved ads.
Brody Reyes
>advertising agency *advertising authority, as in, the ASA.
Parker Harris
But gaymers like to sound like cynic nihilistic retards. They actually think the mindset of a teenager makes them sounds smart so prepare for the usual >it's pointless >what a waste of time Typical from weak minded faggots that enjoy being fucked dry from behind.
Sean lied. Nowhere else but in the gaming industry you can get away with advertising shit as candy. It needs to stop.
Ethan Lee
>Make a decent game >Gamers throw a tantrum because is not the most perfect game ever
Self entitlement at its finest. Gamers are the worst kind of people.
Justin Collins
>get away How? The game was massively refunded, the bad press following the release was overwhelming and it's highly unlikely people will flock anything Hello Games produce ever again.
Remember that God himself tried to stop them from making NMS

You deserve the disappointment if you were hyped for this game Sean did you a favor, your radar needed fixing
Caleb Butler
SOFA KING WEE TODD EDD

Brody Jackson
Ah yes I'm sure they are in massive debt with huge losses because that's how it works >i got a refund so its ok they learned their lesson
Fucking pathetic
Hudson Morales
They had over 200k concurrent players on steam, I think they can eat a few thousand at most refunds.
Matthew Price
>Haha, my hate boner is not satisfied! I want Sean Murray to hang himself under a bridge! You should hang right next to him.
Angel Cook
>team works on a game for years >it sells alot, everyone gets paid >suddenly mass refunds
Connor Morgan

Nicholas Carter
People know ad/commercial is just ad, yet still buy it. Now hyping, shilling... We're screwed.
Grayson Scott
>That's not fair, I don't want him dead. Him being homeless and suffering for the rest of his life is just enough for me. ;)
Ryan Diaz
none of the games advertising lied though they had the scripted events that were shown at E3 which werent even said to be in the final game they said you'd be able to see other players if you ran into them which you can (that first day thing was a server error)
they were extremely shitty and shifty about talking about things and they were far from above the boards but they didn't do anything illegal. just stop talking about this shit game and let it fucking die already.
Nicholas Hernandez
That's also a stretch.
Juan Allen
>but they didn't do anything illegal. Dude there's a company persecuting them for false advertising, you think they would bother to do that if they didn't have any evidence?
Landon Sanders
>they were extremely shitty and shifty about talking about things and they were far from above the boards but they didn't do anything illegal
The ASA is not a governmental body and they do not adjudicate on the legality of anything. They are, however, intensely concerned on 'shifty and shitty' behaviour in a marketing context.
Of course, the adverts might be perfectly honest, I don't know, and I can't predict what the ASA will decide, but don't misdirect the conversation from 'shitty practices' to 'legalities.'
Brandon James
lots of emplyoers ban Cred Forums because it has the reputation of porn and shit while reddit has a better reputation as a social media website or some shit. It's pretty stupid but impressions do count for something
Alexander Diaz
Great, hopefully they won't make a new game after this. Don't wanna see his annoying face & taking 20 mins at E3 anymore.
