I do agree they need to go less overboard next time. Honestly though, that shouldn't be too hard. They can keep Marth for the older games and to represent the series as a whole, Roy to represent the Game Boy Advance games (while a newcomer would be great, I'd take what I can get), Ike to represent the Gamecube/Wii games, and Robin and/or Corrin to represent the Nintendo 3DS games. Lucina was neat as a bonus, but she should not have priority for the next game. Add a character from the most recent title, and you have the same amount of or even less characters than in Smash 4 while giving the franchise good representation.

B. have some sort of association with Sakurai/HAL Labs

Everybody expected a Kid Icarus: Uprising rep, and Palutena was the most predicted as well as wanted. Since she's unique, there's no reason to cut her. Dark Pit is fine since he was a last minute clone, but it's not like he snubbed out an original fighter (only Alph, who would have also been a clone).
Again, Lucina is a last minute clone whose inclusion didn't impact the final product much. Roy and Corrin are arguable, but I think at least one should return for Smash NX (Roy to represent the GBA games, Corrin since he is unique and represents the first post-renissance set of games) to appear along the others as well as a new rep.
Charizard is absurdly popular beyond his starter status and has made two appearances in Smash so far. Greninja is indeed arguable, but they're unique and are the most popular Pokémon from Generation VI (even if some popularity was caused by Game Freak and company, prior to his reveal for Smash he was already rising to stardom). Honestly, if Sun and Moon don't end up outselling X and Y (no matter which games are better in quality) he might as well stay to represent the 3DS Pokémon games.
This is retarded. Sonic, Mega Man, PAC-MAN, Ryu, and Bayonetta all fit extremely well. Snake in Brawl and Cloud in Smash 4 are the odd ones out, but they are super iconic. Also, in addition to all of the hype that surrounded his inclusion, Cloud represents Nintendo's relationship with Square/Square Enix (mutual back in the days of the NES and SNES, rekindled in recent years) as well as RPGs in general.
Dr. Mario is yet another extra clone (mostly). He did not keep Ridley, the Ice Climbers, or any non-clone characters out. He was part of the dessert in Smash 4, as Sakurai said. Plus, he represents the first prominent Mario spin-off series. (I do hate that he is weaker in Smash 4, but that's besides the point.)
Removing Falco is a terrible idea. He's been in since Melee, and I doubt he'll be cut above at least a dozen characters.

Who knows, perhaps we'll get another major DKC game with K. Rool as the main antagonist again, launching that character back in relevance again. Maybe Takamaru will receive a revival similar to how Little Mac did. Maybe Nintendo will go on to produce new major IPs on the level of Splatoon after that games' success.

Out of feasible characters, she won. Snake or Banjo & Kazooie (the latter outside of Japan at least) might have won over Bayonetta, but their owners didn't want to lend them out. A fourth-party character might have won over Bayonetta, but they violate the rules. A character that couldn't work due to technical issues (Inkling, Ice Climbers, Ridley, etc.) might have won over Bayonetta, but they simply couldn't happen. A character that always has a notable role in the game (Waluigi, Ridley again, etc.) might have won over Bayonetta, but Nintendo/Sora Ltd./Bandai Namco/Sakurai didn't want to deal with that. A veteran (Wolf, Ice Climbers again, etc.) might have won over Bayonetta, but Nintendo thought that a newcomer would be better. (The last one is notably less likely, but it's always a possibility). Bayonetta does not have to deal with any of these barriers. The biggest problem was her kind of raunchy fighting style, but it was able to be toned down for the family friendly fighting game. She also represents the other, even more niche franchises created by Clover Studio and Platinum Games, such as Viewtiful Joe, God Hand, Okami, MadWorld, and The Wonderful 101.

Well, from what I've seen from some fans, it's possible to make a good moveset with Starfy, the main thing to take in account is his transformations, costumes, and characteristics in his movements. I can't seem to find this one image from a Japanese Artist on Twitter and it's due to the fact that it can be ass if you're on mobile. I do recall out he can use Starpedo as an Air Down akin to Lucas' kick or how for the Hold Up A, summon a little galaxy like Mewtwo via the Magic Set from DnS 1.

Smash Run was a good idea, but poorly executed. Honestly, it would've been more fun if you could play it online and tweak the final match as if it were a regular game.

Otherwise, they need to bring back Break the Targets in a meaningful way and bring back Board the Platforms. Although that might be way too much considering how much content is packed into each Smash game already.

To be fair, Sakurai's really good at designing characters, he just kinda sucks at everything else.

Literally anyone else would've realized how much everyone likes Smash as a competitive fighting game and tried to appeal to that crowd already. It's not like people who enjoy Smash casually can't just turn on items or something.

It didn't really help that Sakurai and his team were already working on two different versions of Smash at once. I don't see how it could of been possible to do a full fledged story mode in those circumstances.

The whole "getting leaked on youtube" excuse Sakurai came up with always felt like damage control to me, to cover up the fact that they were spreading resources thin by making the 3DS version.

I really wanted Wonder Red to win the ballot (he was surprisingly high up in polls somehow), but mostly because I thought Bayonetta would never make it into the game (because of her guns, not the sexiness).

I still think Wonder Red (VJ to be honest) would have been a more fun fit for Smash. Especially after all our serious, realistic DLC humans (Roy, Ryu, Corrin, Bayo, Cloud) I mean come on.

I would love for Joe to be in Smash. He'd really fit right in. It's such a shame that he's probably like, 10th in line as the next Capcom character likely to be in Smash, when you think about it.

Mega Man could get another rep. It's not super likely, but it could happen. We could get Proto Man or even Mega Man X. Or even Bass or something.

Street Fighter could get another rep too. There's always Ken or Akuma. Or even Chun-Li. Maybe Cammy, Zangief, or Guile as well. I could see literally any of those getting in before Joe.

And then there's Devil May Cry as well. I could really see Dante getting in before Joe even though he's almost never been on a Nintendo system before. But he's way bigger as a character, more iconic, and much more associated with the genre. Plus people are dying to see Dante vs. Bayonetta.

And then there's Resident Evil as well. I could easily see Jill Valentine or Leon getting in before VJ.

Although honestly, I'd love for all of Kamiya's characters to get in. Dante, Joe, Bayonetta, and Wonder Red. The crossover potential there is amazing.

I can see the problem with stretching the development efforts out into a cool campaign-mode, when they could just add more characters/stages to the game.

Even 8-player smash is pretty shit desu. I would have much preferred a sort of Tag Team mode, where players cycle each stock. 2v2 with 2 players on each sideline would be fucking awesome.

But I was just thinking, if Sakurai took more inspiration from the modern games, he could have a style similar to Bayonetta, where different inputs could trigger different moves depending on the context.

For example, forward-B could be Wind Path. Depending on how far or close you were to your opponent, you could either follow up said Wind Path with a Flying Swallow by pressing B again or a Guillotine Throw. Or you might not press anything, and the Wind Path might function as an additional quick jump that might close the distance between you and your opponent faster.

They could also take some inspiration from the Dead or Alive series for his moveset. Maybe he could have command inputs like the other Ryu? Idk, but I'd like to see some what to pull off an Izuna Drop.

People love them in Mario Kart, partially leading MK8 to be the most successful Wii U game. People love them in Smash as well, but people don't like that they're all stuck in a junior clown car that doesn't suit them, they have a final smash that doesn't suit them, they are all treated as Bowser Jr in the game's records, and always earn you a Bowser Jr trophy. It doesn't work how that have to be shrunk and squashed down to fit Bowser Jr's size and proportions, and how poor their models are compared to the ither fighters. Bowser Jr fans don't like that the character doesn't have any proper recolors of his own. But, people also don't want then to get too much space or attention.

Mish-mashing all of their moves together, based on all the games they've been in for all these years, make one moveset based on all of their fights from over the dozen games they're in. Shared final smash, hypothetically could be calling in the airship from SMB3. Make Larry the default koopaling, the others can be selected as alts. Same exact moves, same exact animationd tweaked for their shape and proportions. Alter size, weight, speed, reach, attack strength, things like that, depending on each koopaling. Animations are all the same, except the idle and facial animations, and give them all their own taunts, Lemmy bounces on a ball, Wendy blows a taunting kiss like in the SMW artwork. Clearing any mode with one earns a trophy of the character you're playing as, but to balance things they're the only characters who can have their trophies unlocked by normal means too. Clear classic with Roy, all 7 of their trophies are thrown in the ring, Morton in All-Star, etc.

You're effectively hiding 7 low-effort yet decently varied clones of different shapes and sizes under one character slot. It might be work equivelant to making one new character, 2 or 3 regular clones, and a handful of new good quality trophies. But I think it would be worthwhile and generally well-recieved.

Oh yeah, I was just thinking the other day how a revamp of Link might work. In addition to giving him the iconic BotW outfit, I also thought they could give him some other neat additions, like a sailcloth for recovery, maybe his bombs could start fires, which you could then use to jump over and use the updraft to rise with the sailcloth. Or you might even drop bombs from gliding while using the sailcloth.

A character from Soul Calibur, either Nightmare or Yoshimitsu. Namco deserved to have 2 reps in the game (at least, more than Capcom did) for helping Nintendo develop Smash 4. Their other two biggest series, Tekken and Tales, were already represented with Mii fighter costumes... so that leaves the Soul Calibur series.

Nightmare would be cool because he's the face of that series, plus Smash is sorely lacking in playable villains. And Yoshimitsu just has a quirky moveset and personality that would be PERFECT for Smash Bros.

That and his alts could be his different appearances throughout the series

Features include Smash Adventures (a mix between Adventure Mode and Missions), Smash World (a mode aimed more toward casual players, with minigames and special battles with opponents online), Smash Central (a mode aimed at more competive players, with a ranking system, official tournaments, and challenging ways to play), multiple movesets for certain characters (Mario wielding a Hammer, some characters such as the Fire Emblem cast Inklings using different weapons, Zero Suit Samus, etc.), and Super Forms (more powerful forms of each character accessed via a meter: Mario becomes a phoenix, Fox boards a fighting Arwing robot, Jigglypuff becomes a fairy pop star, etc.).

Link is mostly still the same one we know (SS just doesn't have a boomerang if you want to be picky), but Zelda doesn't really do anything in SS to incorporate in Smash (plus she has a pretty bland look), and Ganondorf isn't even in that game.

I do, but I stopped trying to play him competitively. That no-grab bullshit hurts. Thankfully, you can combo just as easily with the dash attack, but that's easily blocked and punished.

Akuma sounds like a fun addition mostly because of how different he'll play compared to Ryu.
