If it's a roguelike and the map changes/you get cutoff from the tile then let me know there's treasure somewhere in the room. Maybe not a treasure chest symbol on the minimap but there could be gold coins scattered on the floor of the tile or a crooked painting with a secret compartment behind it.

If it's a set map and you can return to the tiles or play the same map over and over again then keep the treasure hidden but findable so it feels more rewarding and like you've actually finally discovered hidden treasure

for example in castlevania games there tend to be secret rooms with cool shit in them that isn't really necessary to beat the game or anything and often has items that become obsoleted by later things anyways, so in that case i'd rather be in the dark
in something like a metroid game where powerups never become obsolete and there are rewards for finding everything, it's a really dick move to hide things without giving you any indication that they're there and i'd rather have some kind of clue to point it out
