By my personal experiences with shoving horse dicks into squirrels, improving the GPU generally improves the maximum resolution the computer can reach regardless of how fast the CPU is, because its a GPU only weight.
Same can be said about screen shaders, geometry count etc etc etc...

So it IS a way to reach higher resolutions like 1440p, but if the game have shit frame rate due the CPU, the frame rate will stay the same.
