He has a game design degree

>he has a game design degree
>he goes to game design school
Why? You can make video games straight out of high school.

Shut up aoba.

>Making videogames

Get a real job.

as an indie developer, I laugh at anyone who goes to college

I have a programming degree and I still can't get a job
Fuck you Aoba

I have an unfinished programming degree and I got a job.

How do I make a video game then, smart guy?

not op but you should probably start with making phone crap or indieshit on steam

>Libshit SJW friend goes to a $40k a year Art School on mom and dad's money
>"I HAVE to go to an expensive school because I HAVE to prove I'm worth it"
>Gets his meme degree, can't do shit with it
>Moves to Commiefornia where he can't afford shit
>New Game triggers the shit out of him because "that's bullshit, you can't just learn that stuff on your own, you HAVE to go to school and be taught by a professional"
>mfw he's now teaching himself to code on his own so he can actually get a job
>"But friend, I thought you couldn't learn stuff on your own and needed to be taught by a professional"
>He changes the subject

Game maker is pretty easy to learn. There have been a pretty good number of successful game maker games.

>he has a CS degree
>he thinks he majored in STEM

You can't learn to code on your own. Unless you're the "ideas" guy then you won't be making games. And "ideas" guy isn't even a real thing. I had this arrogant mofo in my group who said he was an "ideas" guy. Couldn't code for shit and it was the last semester.

Actually, I'm getting a meme degree at the Northwestern university

University is the biggest and worst meme. It's a complete waste unless you go into STEM

Oh god I remember that thread
Did you save the edit of the professor as pepe with a student as wojack?

I want to live in the new game universe!

>Science Technology Engineering Mathematics
How is it not?

>Transitioning into Med School with my BS in Pre Med, Minor in Chem
>Medical College is on the same campus as my University, all of my classes will be there now
>Signs all over the place like "This is a lab coat only floor! You are REQUIRED to wear long sleeves and pants when on this floor!"
>"PS this is not to stifle your individuality or impose gender roles, it is for your personal safety"

This shit is bleeding into STEM too, though.

You can't, boys aren't allowed.

>You can make video games straight out of high school.

If you took a programming course in high school, and if your high school even offers programming courses. Otherwise, you're up shit creek without a paddle.

You have a better chance of winning the lottery than you do releasing a successful and well received game

>not making video games before you're out of high school
>not getting experience while you have free schooling

This. Got an internship this summer, they hired me and now I have sweet 30k roubles per month just by going there twice a week in the free days. A bit hard juggling both university and job, but nothing unmanageable.

Have fun marketing your game.

just viral it on Cred Forums

>You can't learn to code on your own
I learned jack shit in college. At most you'd only learn about syntax uses. The rest from structuring, data flow, looping, scripting you'd have to learn for yourself.

Aoba didn't fall for the for-profit "video game university" meme. Instead she's working with YAGAMI FUCKING KOU making the video game of her dreams, and having motherfucking kawaii-ass tea parties with her peers during break!

Luckily Nenecchi is getting her head on straight and Ahagon will probably just tell her to drop out of that waste of time and she can get the right certs for programming in like 6 months if she applies herself, and then Brown Sugar will get that slutty little blonde a position on the programming team. Aww yeah Ahagon knows JUST the position.

Aoba literally got turned down for the job and was going to be told to try again after university. Luckily a high ranking lesbian got horny for her. And luckily a high ranking gay was easy to manipulate.

>high school
>free
The good ones anymore cost as much to go to as uni.

With enough solo practice, I can play a piano sonata. But getting lessons from someone will help me get there faster.

also I won't end up making a game that looks like rev60 lmao

Tfw student pilot

It's expensive but I love it, I highly recommend any anons get in the industry while they can, pay is climbing higher than its ever been since all the old fucks are being forced out and nobody planned for it ahead of time.

>why bullshit courses exist?
>why people pay for bullshit courses?

>someone up in Washington says "everyone should have degree"
>goverment backs student loans, so everyone can go to uni
>students are given loans regardless if they will be able to pay them off or not, because hey, goverment backs them!
>suddenly unis have more students than they ever expected
>they increase tuitions, because hey, they will pay, because everyone get loans
>they create useless, pointless or outright bullshit courses for people with no useful talents or skills, so they can milk them too
>people still flood them, because "everyone should have degree"
>banks get richer
>unis get richer
>taxpayers pay for above
>students get in depts they never going to pay off with bullshit degree they have

>debts*

>I have a programming degree

What is a programming degree? Something you get at a vocational school?

p. much this.

its the downside of mixing government funded benefits with private industry. It is easily exploitable and quickly turns into a giant waste of taxpayer money on one end, and some (presumably) jew making a fat paycheck for little to zero work on the other end. This same phenomena can be seen in almost every single part of the economy.

just look at the medical industry, the primary reason that shit is so expensive is because primary care givers have a 100% chance to get paid for any service rendered, so they arent afraid to jack up the price. If they dont, the products and services they use in the process of providing care will, and then they will be forced to as welll.

At the risk of straying to far into meme territory, I want to say that this is the kind of thing that national socialism is meant to fix, by removing the private industry factor and ensuring that all entities are price controlled from the top down in order to ensure no waste is created. But that will never happen because muh nazism

>people paying thousands to go to college
I hope if you're not going into STEM you're at least going into law or something
Otherwise it's all just a waste.

I LOVE AOBA

SHE IS MY WIFE

Funny, as an indie developer literally everyone with a real job laughs at you.

it doesnt matter what that individual user is doing,

literally millions of americans every year coming out of highschool do it. They pull out student loans out the fucking wazoo because they have been told their entire lives "you aint shit without a college degree" and end up going and attempting to get a degree while being a complete fucktard.

most people that pull out federal student loans dont graduate, and end up with a massive debt that literally cannot be wiped by any form of bankruptcy.

The entire scheme is a scam. A well meaning scam, but a scam none the less.

What is a good programming book for someone who knows literally nothing?

I'm a sandwich artist, I should probably try some other stuff.

>tfw multimedia artist
>tfw somehow both STEM and not STEM

Can't become an X engineer without a four year degree these days.

Wait a minute, is it me or have I seen this thread before? Hmm.

>engineer

well of fucking course it requires a degree, its a fucking engineer position. My point isn't that jobs shouldn't require degrees, my point is that millions of fucktards who would never qualify for the job in the first place be just not being intelligent enough are the ones funding this massive scam.

If you want to be an engineer, and if you think you can do the work needed, and have the talent for it then pulling out the loans and taking the tokens from the hebrews obviously isnt a bad idea. Just be aware that you arent alone in wanting to achieve this, and that there are thousands of other people just as qualified if not more qualified and even more that will try and fail within the first semester

why are you evading my filter?

Java is also an island.
Java is easy to learn and gets you some decent contract work if you know your stuff.

This doesn't sound like a friendship to me.

Degrees are a meme anyway, employers don't give a shit about your grades, its all about previous work experience.

Being Eurofag I cringe everytime I hear "they have free college for everyone in Europe!".
Yes, we have public universities, but not everyone can go to public uni.
>universities ask for funds
>goverment decides how much funds they give to universities
>unis get money and see how many students they can educate with it
>regulate courses way useful ones have priority in funding
>take in promising students, and tell everyone else to fuck off
>those who insist can still get... if they pay
>banks give loans only to those who take courses that will allow them pay off

...

>Any job I've ever had since I was 14.
>College/Uni kids show up during the summer.
>They fuck up literally every single thing they do and become a liability/danger to everyone around them.

Please just stay in college, you're like fucking children.

Oh, so only smart worthwhile people, rich people, and people seeking useful degrees get the chance to go to college.
Doesn't seem like a terrible system to be honest.

I dont see what this has to do with that post

Where are they supposed to get experience?

Making something creative is possible at any age and in any phase of your life, without any prequisites in education, but education makes it easier to get started and gives you useful knowledge. It also makes it possible for you to work in that field without being talented, or without some grand inspiration.
It is also possible that you have the best idea in the world that would make the best game in the world, yet you have no knowledge how to make the game.

The Jews are behind both.

>Be european
>Go to uni for free
>Get a STEM degree
>Move to Murrica
>Find a job relevant to my degree
>It pays much more than if I got the job in Yurope
Life is good.

>mfw when I live within walking distance of that school

goddamn

learn python the hard way

>giving up European standards in healthcare, housing and food
lol

You don't need healthcare when you're a millionaire.
What are you, some kinda commie fucking shit?

I don't give a fuck, away from me. The fact that a 14 year old at the time was causing absolutely no trouble and these bongo drum fucks may as well have been shoving a hammer up their nose says something for the kind of fucks that attended college in my area.

t. never had a job

There is not a single college in America with a good game design course.

The people that should be teaching game design should be good game designers, right? They're not. Most of them haven't made a relevant game in decades, or games they did make were just shovelware shit.

Or sometimes they don't even have those qualifications, sometimes they just "worked in the industry".

Game Maker is really simple and versatile, and there are tons of resources out there. This is a playlist of tutorials for Game Maker from someone that has actually made a successful game: youtube.com/playlist?list=PLUtKzyIe0aB2HjpmBhnsHpK7ig0z7ohWw

Go to college to learn programmng, business, music, graphic design, other things related to video games. Do not go to college to learn game design.

>Go to college to learn programmng, business, music, graphic design
you can learn all those without going to college

college is a big meme now that the internet is widely available

I take a game design course for an elective, it was bretty fun. For the most part we fucked around in Gamemaker/Unity.

At the end we had to make a simple game in either one of the engines that followed a standard of criteria.

You go there for the piece of paper

i laugh at you for labeling yourself as an indy developer

This.

you don't even need the piece of the paper for a lot of fields, only for specialized stuff like if you're planning on becoming a doctor or engineer.

you can go to a coding camp, learn what you need in 6 months, and get a programming job easily.

Were you graded on fun?

We barely even did that. Most of what we did was identifying trends in the game industry and learning how to capitalize on the trends.

The "professor" didn't know a goddamn thing about actual game design and as far as I could dig up, had no real experience.

Also, I used to play games that were made by students at DigiPen, and I don't think a single student from that place ever went on to make anything.

I'm not like against schools or anything, but until ACTUAL game designers come together and try to start courses to teach this shit, I wouldn't seriously take a game design course.

Yes

I don't know where you live, but every college kid that worked at my place was only half-retarded.

I watched two episodes of this, all they do is eat. How is this fun again?

I wanted to see actual working like in shirobako

Then you would have gotten an F you liar.

>wheredoyouthinkweare.jpg

what degree did you get user? I want to get rich too

I partied through a Eng. Lit. degree then got a management job through connections and nepotism.

Best years of my life.

>drop out of high school
>become a little girl
>teleport to Japan
>work on Final Fantasy XXXVII
>make anime real
>tfw

As long as it gets you money right

Doesn't that have some pretty steep health requirements? Like you can't ever have had concussion or some shit like that?

>He fell for the ITT Tech meme

youtube.com/watch?v=DWCt18IIeGg

>tfw friends make fun of me for going to college to get a degree and Networking and Sys Admin
>tfw graduating top honors with tons of job offers, making 70K minimum
>say fuck it and decide to apply to grad school for the same thing
>same companies plus more offering 85K minimum when I'm done, also going to be an adjunct professor

Don't fall for the "hurrr durrr certification r da best :^)" meme, the cert people will work for me. Networking/IT is a huge field and nobody wants to be more than a technician, so if you aren't retarded you are swimming in job offers and money.

People were able to self-taught how to code, make an art, compose a music, learn a language without an internet. Where are living in a fucking 2016. What is stopping you user?

You can learn everything on your own but a decent university has an environment where you can meet like-minded people, industry people, and people you can introduce you to industry people. As well as being a place that facilitates learning and socialising in general.

"But user I can network from home too!", okay mr socialite I believe you, but since you're on Cred Forums I think it's a safe bet that you won't you fucking sperg.

Don't do "Game Design" though, like people have said do games art or programming or whatever. And even if you go to university it doesn't mean you'll learn shit, you still have to teach yourself if you want to get anywhere even if your university is the best.

I'll also add that I'm from the UK so I might very well need that paper if brexit ever actually happens.

t. student at the best ranked uni for animation and shit in the uk

you can be qa grunt out of high school or modeler
that's it

...

i'm lazy

>come into thread expecting Aoba
>get amerifats and meme college

This is why Cred Forums is the worst board on Cred Forums

trader = 50% returns
video game producer - 1000% returns
doctor - i'm in debt until 40, then maybe i'll get rich

what is real job again?

You can become a software engineer without any kind of formal education if you build a portfolio of functional software that you can present to employers instead of a degree.
That of course requires sufficient dedication and intelligence on your part. Learning to code on your own isn't exactly hard but it still takes years of effort.

yes. and they don't get paid that much early in career even though it's freaking hard work

>Americans pay 20k in student loan debts for this

Will I be able to get a cute 2D gf like that as well?

...

What's the context here?

My wife Aoba is so cute.

>graduate from a decent university that didn't rape me with debt
>get a bachelors in CS
>have almost no fucking idea what I'm doing
>land a decent job
>have been working there for a year
Every day I feel like I could get fired despite my boss telling me otherwise. I am mostly clueless though.

You're not alone user. Enjoy your stay.

That is literally every single one of my reviews. Boss always tells me she thinks I'm doing a good job, does give me a few small things to improve on and checks back in my progress a month later.

Any time I get a "You're doing good" I think "You literally have no fucking idea what you're talking about because I'm retarded."

ITT Tech hired anyone as professors, this included crazies.

Now the place is shut down.

This is pretty normal. A lot of people after going through school and finally getting a job feel like they're somehow cheating the system and are afraid of being found out as a fraud.

Some even have more intense feelings like they're living in some kind of dream world or hallucination and that at any moment they'll wake up to find themselves passed out in some alleyway.

This has never happened to me because my life is shit anyways.

Live the dream, user.

Tl;dr all the shitposts
I just went into gamedev just after the high school, with my knowledge of vidya and other sources of culture, huge amount of analysis given to everything and not being ass faggot I got a work easily and in no time i got 10m players over all the games i worked on. Don't waste your time over some gamedev schools, there are barely any people doing it at least of all game developers I know (I know a lot of them), small and big. All of them learned everything by yourself, using books or tutorials, that costs are really low. You just need a skills, learn them by yourself, finish one project, depending on what are you working on it may be game or just some assets. Then go for junior role or try to get paid internships somewhere, believe or not its not as hard as you think, be determined and dont shit your pants. Git gud and good luck.

Hi Aoba

>Also, I used to play games that were made by students at DigiPen, and I don't think a single student from that place ever went on to make anything
Recently out in general? Portal came out of there, but yeah, I haven't heard of anything else.

> tfw fell for the game design degree meme
>tfw went to DeVry

Kill me.

Do you not know what the T stands for?

Why is Kou best girl?

holy shit

Portal kinda came out of there. The game that got Valve to pick them up was much, much rougher. No doubt Valve lent a hand or two to them to help polish things up.

Nitronic Rush came from digipen students, that's a neat game. They also made a sequel called Distance which is also really good.

Aside from that, you never hear students from various colleges going on to make successful games.

I recall The Art Institute advertising that like 90% of graduates went on to get jobs "in the industry". What they don't tell you is that that includes being a clerk at GameStop.

I share your pain, buddy. One of the worse mistakes I've made, honestly. I can't believe I ever thought it was a good idea.

Are you me?

I think you mean STEAM friend.

this shit is so weird to me
I feel art is essential but why do they want to be part of the STEM group?
I figured they would want to stand out as their own innovative section

>>take in promising students, and tell everyone else to fuck off
this is not even remotely politically possible in america. the student loan thing will just continue until it fully crashes

...

I just signed up for a game programming course

>live all of my life near an airport
>Always loved planes i could spend hours looking at them go by when i was a child
>years go by
>want to become a pilot
>way too expensive

Life is suffering

Well, you see lil' user, to actually receive work, you should be working towards a degree. Employers don't want 10 years of working at fast food as "work experience". Most internships require people who are working towards a particular major, they don't just hire undecided students. It would be naive of you to expect to find good work experience without a degree or at least chasing one. But I'll give you the benefit of the doubt. Go find good work experience without any of the things I have said.

Why did they change it? Art will always be necessary, but did some people just get sick of everywhere lauding STEM and just try to shoehorn that A in there?

Art majors kept getting upset that their field wasn't as critically acclaimed as they want it to be.

gotta get those government dollars

Fucking shit! I though i was alone.
Took CS too.
Got job.
Don't know what the fuck i'm doing, most days i just sit around looking busy.

Will you stemfags pull your heads out of your asses? College is another four years of high school, no one cares what degree you had as an undergrad. A graduate degree is more important.

My sister is a med student and her BA is in political science. She didn't need a chem/physics major to do well on the MCAT.

one that contributes to society. making video games is more like a hobby, not a real job.

>You can make video games straight out of high school.
Yes, you can. They won't be very good though and would necessarily be simple in nature due to your lack of knowledge.

Who gives a fuck about contributing to society if you can't even take care of yourself?

>comp eng undergrad
>23
>making 80k/year
even if that doesn't seem like a lot to you, it sure as hell is a big step up for me

>med school
>anatomy, biology
>science
Come back when you have an anecdote about somebody going into an actual scientific field.

I used to think contributing to society was what life was about too.

Then I realised that life is short and when you die nobody will give a shit what you contributed to society, so you might as well do what you enjoy as long as you can afford to live.

tons of people complain about how much they hate their job. I love my job. I doubt they are laughing at me

Wow man, were you really only 14 when you started working ?
Like, 14 for real or like 14-ish ?
That's incredible. It's like 14 is sooo low, you know ? Oh man I wish I had started working at 14. I mean come-one, four-fucking-teen !?
Wow.
Just, wow.
You are an amazing person I hope you get cancer and die you fucking idiot.

>tfw film school student

I don't want to suck dicks on the street.

>contributing to society
Nigger I'm becoming a chemical engineer so I can live comfortably
Do you think I'm going to contribute shit to society by helping a fortune 500 company improve their profit margins
Don't worry about your efforts doing anything but lining your own pockets in the long run

>Implying you would know how to design proper levels/graphics/atmosphere/characters without taking at least 5 game design courses

LOL @ U

Bet you Pajeets also think you can make anything you want just because you know how to code monkey

Why are you a film student if you don't want to suck dicks?

>This mad that you're attending adult daycare when some people were making dosh when they were still in high school.

Must be hard being you, princess.

Because he prefers taking it up the butt.

>tfw wetback stoner that works two jobs and is too poor to afford college

At least I'm translating vidya right now for fun.

>tfw trap fashion student

I finished my studies you ittle imp and every day of working since then I regret not studying more because now I don't have the time to properly do it and am often forced to just skim through shit picking up only the bare minimum htat allows me to do the job.

>tfw neet and free from the wageslavery

Fellow wetback here, I take it fafsa isn't giving you anything?

I'm poor and I go to school for free. This doesn't include my scholarships.

If you're really poor, they will pay you to go to school.

t
ranslating... if you mean fansubbing non-english into english then you should know that there are millions of us greatful for what you do.

if you mean getting paid to localize stuff... I'm sure the 10 people that don't speak english are greatful for your effort.

I need to know what this is

Of course not. I know no one will deport me, but I'd rather not risk it.

Just fan-subbing. I'd love to get paid for this, though.

So you're saying not only are you a giant man baby, but also and incompetent man baby, good to know.

That's not software engineering though, that's programming. Software engineering is a separate discipline that requires an ABET certified engineering degree, just like any other form of engineering. Just because many programmers hold the title "software engineer" because their employers are too ignorant to know the difference, doesn't make them an engineer.

How hard is it for you to become a permanent resident

Oh you mean you're actually from the motherland. Sorry, I'm just a 2nd gen beaner.
Well then fuck user, have you tried becoming a citizen the orderly way? They might even give you more benefits for that shit.

No one changed it this was probably made by an assblasted art fag

I really hate the whole STEM thing

It should really just be SM, that's all there is. And science just boils down to applied math.

Fastest way is marrying some girl or dude but I'd rather not, I'm only 22

user it didn't sound like you were in a huge rush so what's a little wait going to hurt?
I started college late too, shit is still more fun than working shitty jobs to "get by".

>tfw going to community college while I figure out what I want to do
>year later I'm still clueless
Intro psychology was the only class I enjoyed but I don't want to be a therapist or anything like that. Should I go with it anyway? I'm no good at engineering but that was also kind of cool.

How do I get the motivation to stop jerking off and start learning something useful?

Don't fall for the psychology/arts/humanities degree meme.

Engineering is just a fancy word for "I do this thing but not academically or in the pursuit of research"

SM is usually just called science or research. STEM is just a way to separate more methodic disciplines from the ones where you mostly learn stuff(medicine, law) and the ones with a big lean on talent(arts, etc).

I do like the ring of S&M :^) though

I used to date a guy who was in his mid 30's who decided one day to enroll in college for game design. He went the full route and did everything, even music. Flash forward to now, he manages a gamestop. and we broke up
I can't say I feel bad for him.

If you like a field but don't know if you can do it purely, take the engineering route. It's just a dumbed down version of the academics-focused path but with added "how to apply this with business principles" stuff.

L O N D O N ?

That's a no true scotsman fallacy if I ever saw one.

>went to video game school
>have an actual game industry job not even a year after graduating

What field should a loser with no interests outside of vidya and anime go into? Literally thinking of any job just makes me realize I don't want to do any of it.

Because I like films, silly user.

Data entry seems pretty easy

Getting coffee for Todd Howard doesn't count.

>Willingly becoming the office's bottom bitch
>Not making your own game first

>tfw wetback
>tfw the government and my college give me $35,000 each year

You only had to get good grades. And pass the SATs, but those are pretty easy.

No, but getting coffee with Todd Howard while we make Skyrim 2 does.

>friend wants to get a computer science degree so he can go work for sony making games
>I'm going to be studying autocad and engineering
>$20 per hour jobs near by with 2 years of autocad experience minimum
>i'm going to use my the spare money to do stupid projects like building a pinball machine, starting a record label, and finding a way to make shit that i said would never to happen to actually make it happen

Good luck doing with the literal zero free time you're going to have
