You know, the one instance of censorship that I think might've been justified was Earthbound.

In the original Japanese, Magicant Ness is completely naked except for his hat. I don't think that would've gone over too well.

Xenosaga 1. The censored version ended up being more brutal than the original.

When it makes more sense. For example, Soleil's dialogue in Fire Emblem Fates was removing something that was incredibly distasteful, while adding a better sense of realism. Then they censored the fact that she was bisexual, FFS. NoA is the Bergentruking of being idiots when it comes to censorship.

Given that Cred Forums seems to think that localization is censorship, the english VA for Professor Layton is exceptionally better than the japanese one - not because the japanese is bad, but because an english VA for Layton just fits so much better. It being a good VA is quite nice, as well.

I've heard that Codename STEAM improved for a similar reason.

Outside that, gaining a bigger audience and becoming well known enough to produce more content, or produce better content with the income, is a potential benefit to some sort of censorship. The only case that comes to mind might be Fate/Stay Night, which intentionally ignored the porn aspects and was able to move into a much larger audience - and the series certainly has been doing far better for itself. That might not be an example people like, since it is more self-censorship and more just focusing on a different aspect for the different anime media (and apparently the original author didn't want the porn, just used it to get the story attention) but given Cred Forums's draconian definition of censorship being any change from the original source material, it would certainly fit will inside that.

I would say, it's never a good thing, but it has varying degrees and it's not always as black and white as "censorship = no buy". The removal of the bloodsplatter effect on devour in God Eater Resurrection for the international release is an honest improvement, gameplay-wise. It was distracting and not exactly necessary, and I wish they had removed it for Rage Burst as well just so you can see shit better.

Localization does not always result in deliberate filtration of the artist's vision, but imperfect translations are a byproduct of language barrier and cultural differences. Localization can thus instead create a context for non-native audiences that allows them to espouse the same or similar emotional response as the artist intended for the specific scene and/or dialog.

If however you are talking about the sort of localization that changes easily translatable phrases or dialog to one that will less likely offend the non-native audience (sexually explicit ones, for example), then that is a form of censorship.

Their laws are also much stricter in terms of what content is allowed, particularly when it comes to violence too, so Japanese would need to somehow get those laws removed. The only thing removed was the bloodsplatters that cover your screen when you use the Devour action - which you do a lot in the game.
It's not QUITE as bad in Rage Burst, but in the original Resurrection, it's rather excessive in said screen-covering. Thus, the removal means you can see what's going on for those few moments after and can attempt to get out of the way (which interrupts the devour, but means you aren't getting your ass hit) instead of not being able to see shit.
Rage Burst keeps a lesser version of the screen splatter which isn't as obtrusive, but is still minorly annoying.
