I've been interested to get into the series. Which one should I play first?

Downpour

The first one.

Kek
SH 2 is going to be the popular answer with SH 3 tailing right behind. I'll back a dark horse and say Shattered Memories--ideally on Wii if you can. It's pretty much a retelling of SH 1 with the tanky shit combat removed. After playing that, go to SH2/3.

1 then either 2 or 3
after 2 and 3, play 4
then play downpour or shattered memories
Homecoming might be alright
haven't heard really anything good about Origins though.

1-4, ignore the rest as they're all garbage

other anons will try to convince you otherwise, they are full of shit and don't know when the series actually died (it's been dead ever since some faggot that thinks he knows more about the series than the creators themselves took over, and had a fighting chance with kojima before konami as they're commonly known to do these days, decided to take a big fat shit all over the hopes of any fans the series had left at the point, ruining any possibility of a future or garnering a new audience that wouldn't readily accept the bowel movement on a disc they'd been pushing since 4)

power rankings, if you can't get over 1's age
>2
>3
>1
>4

otherwise, play them in order and enjoy some of the best atmospheric gaming on offer

1 or 2.

Ill agree with you FULLY!
but i wanna,KINDA defend SH origins, sure not the best game of those titles.A damn playable one

SH1, obviously.
It´s not only an essential game concerning the story and whole series, it is also THE best game!

You should in general just play SH1-4, and ignore the rest. You can get these for PC. Follow this guide to get them look and run smooth on modern machines, get them all from these DL links:

Mount the ISOs of 2 & 3, and then run their installers like always.
The SH1 is a PS1 rip that you gotta emulate.
The "sh2proxy" is a all-in-one fix, that works as a no-cd crack as well. It is included in the pack.
If you use the NEW fix mentioned in the guide, you can use the sh2proxy's EXE as the no-cd crack!

In case you experience issues saving the game / not being able to edit the disp.ini, make sure the files aren't set to "Read Only", and run the game as Administrator.
If SH2 gets stuck in a black screen upon launch, close it and re-start it again.

SH2-4 do not support Xinput gamepads. Either use Xpadder, a DirectInput pad, or just play with KB+M.

Start with 1, dummy.
Even if you don't like it, give 2 a try, as it's highly regarded in video game history.
Don't bother with 3 if you didn't enjoy the previous games. If you did, play 3, it's my personal favorite.
You should also check 4: The Room. Not as good as the others but still enjoyable in it's own right.

Every other game is garbage don't even bother. Except maybe Shattered Memories.

PLEASE NO

here's the recommended emulator settings for SH1. Works great on all other games too.

The plugins used are:
-Pete's OpenGL 1.78; (more options & better performance than 2.x version)
-Eternal's SPU Engine.

alternatively just use a software renderer for very 1:1 PS1-like graphics, including 240p only.
...OR just buy the game from PSN Store for few bucks.

You could also try the new PGXP emulator, that adds Perspective Correction to PS1 textures.

Shattered Memories is NOT a replacement for SH1 in any form! It is 100% a brand new game of its own, and has nothing to do with original canonical continuity.

I like SM a lot, but you really, REALLY need to play the original SH1, and preferably 3 as well, in order to appreciate its nuances.

Downpoor is horrible, wet diarrhea-tier garbage.
Origins is clunky and fugly, series´ plot and lore raping garbage.
Homecoming is The Movie - The Game - We Want RE4 Audience -garbage.

SM is the only passable western SH game, and only if you acknowledge that it won´t be a survival-horror game.

release order

Only the first three are truly worth playing, play the rest if you really want more.

4 isn't bad but it turns into an escort mission during the second half of the game.

Start from the beginning, stop with the one you don't have fun with.

I came to this thread to vouch for Silent Hill Homecoming. The controls and combat are made easy so it plays closer to RE4 or Dead Space then traditional silent hill. Fans of the old series hate this one and blame it for ruining the series trademark of shitty controls and bad camera angles. It may not be a good Silent Hill game, but it is certainly a good game on it's own merits. For a certain audience who might have trouble getting into the games, this may be a good starting point.

Don't forget to play 2 and 3 regardless.
In these games it goes a long way if you like/relate to the main char

The first one dumbass

Start with SH1 then try to get the HD remake of SH2 and 3.

Release order

RELEASE ORDER

HOW ARE YOU NOT GETTING IT

STOP

It's hard to say release order when a series starts in the PS1 era. Those games do NOT hold up.

Hang yourselves

SH1 is still great faggot

You're like the only semi non-anonymous person I like

hope you don't die or real life doesnt take you over which would mean you won't be able to post this anymore

The first one you fucking retard.

Why the fuck would you start a series and not play it in order? Why does this thread even exist?

>shitty controls and bad camera angles

the camera angle can be adjusted easily with a simple press of a button and shitty controls are resultant of the player's ability to adjust, if they stay shitty after your first hour, you just suck and that's all there is to it, as far as silent hill is concerned
ignore this faggot OP, play as close to the originals as you possibly can, HD collection should be an absolute last resort
they do if you like video games, fag

>start with SH1
Yes.
>try to get the HD remake of SH2 and 3.
Hell. Fucking. No!

You are very, very wrong.
SH1 is amazing even today, and many PS1 games beat most modern shit titles 6-0 in general.

Downpour and Shattered Memories are shitty Silent Hill games, but are still alright games to play.

I'm personally not a fan of chase sequences in games, and that's pretty much the game play of these two games. Aside from that though, the games seemed okay.

>You're like the only semi non-anonymous person I like
Glad to hear my efforts are appreciated!
Seeing how fucking terribly Konami treats this IP, it´s only natural and right to seek for the original, beautiful titles made by their actually capable ex-underlings.

Downpoor was THE biggest buyer´s remorse concerning the SH series I´ve ever had so far. It seemed to avoid all the common traps of the past non-TS titles and become an actually good "next gen" SH game.

But, somewhere along the line the team either got lazy, or Tomm Hulett seriously managed to fuck it up beyond recognition just by waltzing into the studio mid development. The gameplay is horrible, visuals pathetic, the story nonsensical, self-contradicting mess, and the tech itself is very broken. It does not even have Akira Yamaoka´s music anymore!

I´m not a fan of chase sequences either, and I only like SM for its exploration parts and the way it constantly evaluates your actions, changing the world and characters in numerous ways.

Toronto right now looks like Silent Hill. Mist so thick you can cut it with a knife.

SH1 bruh...
I was desperate to try out SH3, the promo stuff i had seen looked so cool. but as i heard it was direct sequel to 1, i started there. Was not disappint once i got over the first 30 mins or so.

And then I was right to be hyped for 3.
Heather is best girl.

i own SH2 now... Why have i not started yet?

Downpour is shit and rips off SH2.

First post is the worst post.

Obviously user....

>not using mednafen
