What other JRPGs have "random" encounters that are visible on the overworld map like this game? I cannot stand games where random encounters have a chance of happening anywhere and everywhere. I thought CT did it best and would like to play something similar.

Earthbound / Mother 3.
Persona 3 / 4 shows enemies but not specific ones.
Tales of Symphonia
Chrono Cross and Valkyrie Profile off the top of my head.
Will definitely check those out. I don't know how I've not played Earthbound yet.
I just hate completely random encounters. So annoying and pads the damn game.
Every Mario RPG.
for those of you that played through the SNES version and DS version, is there reason for me to play the DS version, if I've already played through every single ending on the SNES version?
tl;dr any reason to play the ds if you've already played the snes
Bravely Default and its sequel Bravely Second
The adventure of Link
Dragon Quest 7 on the 3DS.
RPGMaker games can do this, Legend of Queen Opala did
Seiken Densetsu 3 is more of an action RPG than a JRPG but you should play it anyway
Bonus dungeons bonus secret boss, that sort of stuff.
Legend of legacy
The new Dragon quest VII remake
3 new dungeons plus other extras like vĂdeos or the monster colosseum
I haven't really played them but I think Ni No Kuni and FF13 aren't random
Tales of.
Radiant Historia. Also features time travel.
New script, new bonus dungeon, new ending, new monster battling gimmick.
Nice, keep em coming guys. I've not played a lot of JRPGs and I was hoping CT wasn't an outlier with how it handled random encounters
Xenosaga trilogy
Xenoblade
Parasite Eve
Any SRPG
Eternal sonata (don't play it, it's garbage)
Eat a dick, Boco.
Like other Anons said, you get new monsters, 3 new dungeons, some cool weapons and an end boss that pretty much ties trigger and cross together.
However, the dungeons are pretty tedious and the "new" monsters are just recolored sprites.
Felt like they just put something together for the heck of it.
This is from someone that replays CT every year.
How could anyone consider chrono trigger having "random" encounters? They aren't even symbol encounters like dq7 3ds. They are legit all scripted.
Yes sir...
Secret of Mana
That's why I had quotes around random. Wasn't sure what to call them. Like I said, unfamiliar with JRPGs for the most part.
Fuck you Eternal Sonata has one of the best RPG battle gameplay mechanics.
The story is absolute garbage I can agree with that.
Viola is OP as fuck.
final fantasy 13
This is why I hate random encounters:
