Hey, Cred Forums. I'm making an online trading card game called Forgotten Lore. It's currently up on steam in Early Access. The core of the game is around the fact that cards are steam inventory items which can be traded and sold to other players.

I'm doing another giveaway thread today to get some more feedback and criticism. First impressions are super important, as well. Play a few matches with randoms and bots and let me know what you think about the game. What needs improvements, what mechanics are shit, etc.

Just post your steam profile URL and I'll silently drop the game into your library.

I feel ya. The fonts are kind of out of control. I have an artist redoing the card design so the font change will come with it.

Yeah, I agree. Originally I opted for a long trailer because I figured card game enthusiasts cared more about gameplay than a silly trailer. Learned so far that that's not necessarily the case.

Hey there, I'd be glad to help.
steamcommunity.com/id/Zioko345/

A trailer is meant to get people interested. People will go looking for gameplay on youtube if they want to see more. If people aren't making videos go find youtubers who do make videos about card games.

steamcommunity.com/id/chaosgizoid/

I won't turn down free shit

> People like this ACTUALLY exist
And you people wonder why indie devs don't post on Cred Forums anymore. No wonder why Notch isn't saving this hellhole.

so will this have fun combos like mtg or are they forbidden like in hearthstone?

Kinda wish the attack/protect was on the card itself

I'll try it

i've been playing fuckloads of duelyst lately so i'm on a bit of a card game bender, i'll give your game a try op
steamcommunity.com/id/ChazForte/

Yeah I feel ya. I've given the game out to a bunch of streamers, but not many have even really tried it.

Every card I make I've been trying to make both a card to compliment it and a card to counter it. So yeah, some cool combos have been coming out of it naturally this way.

Card design is being redone, and this will happen.

I do video game QA for a living, I'll try to throw some in pro-bono as thanks. Limited to simple functionality as I don't have my software tools at home.

I mean the kind of combo where in one turn you draw your entire deck and either win or concede because you fucked up.

nice

Either here, or ihe discord. discord.gg/0yOPTr4Ow5gMVpnb

I MEAN. If you can figure it out it's not like I'm gonna start tossing out bans, if that's your question. There is a draw 2 card, and you could probably combo it with the Mill tome and summon some bigass guy then Awaken it to attack turn 1.

My PSU blew out so I wont be able to test it out, unless you have a Mac version, which is doubtful.

From what I've seen and read, the game has promise but I'd make a few personal changes.

>Move away from the tabletop back drop
You're gonna get alot of shit from Hearthstoners since people assume that Blizzard invented everything first.

Maybe go the YGO route and have dynamic playing fields?

>Make a graveyard and have it viable
Games like YGO or MTG use the graveyard in their own ways that make the whole game alot more diverse. It would cause for some pretty fun resurrection decks if done right.

If your art gets a complete overhaul, you're in the run for a potential gold mine.

thanks I'll get around to it soon

I guess I could try it out

I genuinely enjoy trading card games and would love to give you feedback, just be warned I won't hesitate to tell you if something is extremely fucking shit.

Just anything, really. And nah. I was approved to dev for xbone and ps4, but at the last minute decided against it. At the end of the day this game is a side project (I work fulltime at an indie studio doing vr games) and I dont want to spend half my already short available time dealing with big company red tape.

so far I want to say that I'd like it if there were some way to make the cards a little bit smaller when you're looking at them in the vault, when you hover over one the pop up is massive and it's overwhelming for me because I don't know what is what yet
also, is there somewhere I can go to see the rules before I jump in?

Probably a good call, just the submission for certification alone costs more than is reasonable for a single person, though maybe they have alternatives for smaller studios or indie titles.

Some of the bugs I'm gonna post are going to be pretty pedantic or minor, take them or leave 'em I always feel it's better to have bugged regardless of severity it than left it for the dev to find out about after submission.

Hey cardanon, I have a friend that likes YuGiOh and I think card games in general. I don't have his url at hand right now though, but I could ask him depending on your opinion.
Will you come back around sometime soon? Would you think a YGO person could get easily into your game? I don't think he knows of Hearthstone, so I reckon he won't be familiar with your system which is similar.

I hope you're happy. This is the future you chose.

Try setting it in the options menu. What is your default resolution and what happened?

sent

Typo, possibly.

Goddamn this is so much easier than work formatting.

steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561197989776438/

Well. Look at that shit.

Also the deck builder needs a filter and I am not sure how many cards I can put in a deck.

Well my native resolution is 1440x900 and it shows all these weird resolutions like 1360x768 and other two that are almost the same as that one. Maybe those are the resolution you want your game to run at but I find it strange and the lack of options kinda annoys me.

steamcommunity.com/id/estebooty

I'll take any reason I can to ditch Hearthstone.

Also, start uploading webms, the gifs are cool but it's hard to get a good look at things.

How badly did this game sell or how bad does it sell? If it was profitable you wouldn't be giving out this many free copies

You should start posting feedback that you have already addressed so I don't have to repeat myself every thread.

Regardless, I can't stress enough that your visual assets need more character and personal touch. Right now it looks like Heartstone minus color with standard RPG artwork on cards.
It also would help to sell yourself better on your steam page. Work on the videos and descriptions to draw more people in so you don't have to give the game away all the time.

steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198251686692 thanks man

Ahh, maybe that's it. The game forces 16:9 because of the shape of the board and how I'm utilizing the space. I'll see if I can do anything about it.

building a community, then monetizing later - the early access section on the store page explains it all

Probably in the works already but organization and classification of cards.

also put an "x" next to the card amount? I thought it was another value when I was making a deck lol

I'd love to test out your game buddy. Http://Steamcommunity.com/id/kawatta

steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198052076992/

Ah, yeah. The amount you have is kind of hard to understand at first glance.

sent

Well it took me about two turns to learn the rules of the game, so to gain mana I have to sacrifice cards in my hand, correct? But that leave me with only a couple of cards to actually play.

Also the AI killed himself by using that card that clears the board and cost half the current hp in order to take out only a single minion that cost like one mana and then the AI did nothing else for the rest of the game until the last turn when it dropped a single creature that I just ignored and won.

LOL the AI in this game is a joke, which I mean whatever it's a PvP focused game, but holy shit haven't seen them do that.

Thanks man, I'll give it a shot in a few days when I have some dedicated time

Sounds like you're using the Mill tome, which yeah that is how it works. If you use Leech, you gain 2 souls every turn in exchange for 1 HP. Sorry about the derp AI, needs a lot of work. Like that user said the game is pretty heavily pvp focused, so I haven't given ai a lot of love yet.

Holy cringe batman

lol now it used fisure with no cards at all at play, also your game needs some confirmation pop ups, I mean I press the vs bot buttom and immediately takes me to a game.

I'd like to check it out. Thanks man

Trying to understand what is happening is really, really difficult at this stage.

steamcommunity.com/id/shaddamc

welp, worth a try, playing hearthstone right now

steamcommunity.com/id/legendarybibo

I love card games.

steamcommunity.com/id/thatgingerfaggot/

Just gonna list some things;

Avehosa always heals for 5 but doesnt indicate her healing value on the card
She also cant heal the player (idk if you want self healing)
There is no limit to how much you can heal a minon for?

Cant poison the player with Wyther? It could even last for a single turn or two (A poison based deck would be neat)
If a minion attacks Wyther why arent they poisoned?

When minions trade blows, why doesnt the attacking minion take damage? (Maybe thats how you want it but it seems odd for me)

Is there a way to disable all these faggy visual effects?

I mean, it looks neat, but I personally don't find online card games appealing.
Just something about not being able to face the person you're playing is weird to me, which sucks because I've tried a few hoping to scratch the itch and it doesn't work.

I dunno, cant say I like the mill tome. Personally I feel like having to sacrifice 2 cards in order to play one with the same cost limits my hand way, way too much. Like, I imagine I have to fill it with a bunch of high cost card that I will never use in order to rush low cost ones? I guess that is one way to beat the ever so slow leech tome.

I can't connect to the server, been sitting here 5+ minutes.

Oh, I also find a little hard to target the enemy player, sometimes it does and sometimes it does not. Maybe the guard cards stop me from attacking him but no where it say it does that. I suppose the targeting system needs to be a little more clear.

steamcommunity.com/id/magtr
Thanks in advance OP

I like cardgames.

steamcommunity.com/id/aghnim

steamcommunity.com/id/kaytse
Will take a few hours till I can try it.

>Avehosa always heals for 5 but doesnt indicate her healing value on the card
Ah, my bad. I'll append that on the next patch.

>There is no limit to how much you can heal a minon for?
Correct, overhealing is a thing. Maybe the wording needs to change?

>When minions trade blows, why doesnt the attacking minion take damage? (Maybe thats how you want it but it seems odd for me)
This is intentional, of course. Not every game needs to be Hearthstone.

I thought the same at first, when first implementing it. I've seen some guys pull off some pretty rad mill decks though. It's tough but doable.

This guy is a real piece of work, Cred Forums

>Correct, overhealing is a thing. Maybe the wording needs to change?

At that point it should probably just be called a health buff, maybe a keyword would work, but it would need to be explained for sure since in almost every well-known card game (and games in general) healing stops at the maximum current value.

>Update
There's no penalty for running out of cards in a match, I had to wait 3 turn for my opponent to kill me with something

Yeah, I should probably make it tick away at your hp if you're out of cards.

Agreed

sent

it'll be worse than Hearthstone and people will only use it to sell cards on the market to make money.

Holy molly I just ran out of cards and I didnt even noticed it! No penalty no warning no nothing and my opponent also ran out! Now we are in a stalemate with none of us being able to win or lose the game! LOOOL

This needs to be fixed asap.

I play a lot of TCG's so I would be down for helping

steamcommunity.com/id/cattra/

Hah, that's great. Yeah, like I said earlier need to tick away hp when no cards remaining.

10/10

>Yeah, I should probably make it tick away at your hp if you're out of cards.
Typically not being able to draw a card on your draw step means you lose the game. Granted, I have no idea how hearthstone does it and the screenshots I've seen of this look like it's based similarly.

Theres a few TCG's I play where if you fail your drawstep you shuffle your grave back into the deck and continue playing but those are a lot more deckbuilders then comp games like MTG, FoW, etc

I feel like you need to improve the actual aesthetics. The card artwork itself isn't great, but it's certainly passable, but the actual design of the cards and UI themselves kinda looks like shit. You used a really generic font, bright colors like pure green and magenta, cards don't have a clean border, buttons look crappy. Honestly it looks like some shitty flash game you'd see in kongregate. You're already literally ripping off Hearthstone so it's not like you have to do any real game design or brainstorming here, so at the very least you could make your game look halfway decent.

That's my critique. Harsh but honest, I hope you burn my words as fuel to make your game even better and don't become discouraged by the negativity.

best of luck.

Yo, I have a couple of things.

The Ice king can't attack the enemy player, I'm not sure if this is intended for freezing attacks but it isn't labeled.

The Mill deck type seems incredibly weak, (I haven't seen any draw mechanic an a card/ scrapping a card only gives half it's cost?)

How the defense works is unclear, Ex: I played 6 games and I'm still not sure how much dmg a 6 attack minion will do to something that has 4 defense.

Something minor, viewing cards in the vault doesn't seem to have any organization. They aren't alphabetical or by soul cost?

In Hearthstone you take damage, but don't die instantly. The first card drawn deals 1 damage, the 2nd deals 2 damage, and so on.

Some more card types to consider:

>Headhunter
Only attacks players

>Warden
Redirects all spell based damage to this card

>Spell cards that buff each of the attributes

>Field cards
Creatures on your opponents side of the field take one damage when summoned, or inflicted with poison when summoned, etc

>Creature types
Dragon, Insectoid, Vampire, etc.

This is for when you're churning out cards after you've fixed the main problems of course

Hearthstone wasn't the first card game and it certainly isn't the only one worth playing currently. Hearthstone has a huge emphasis on casual play and RNG, and it's missing very important things like a graveyard/discard pile. A card game just needs a few unique things to stand out.

Jesus christ, how did
>oh you
trigger you so fucking hard?

Do you know where you are right now?
I'll give you a hint: not Tumblr

HS is the most popular PC card game right now and op is clearly trying to emulate it.

>The Ice king can't attack the enemy player
anything without "attack" listed as a skill cannot attack the player

>The Mill deck type seems incredibly weak
git gud

>How the defense works is unclear
It's damage done = attack - other cards defense, but always at least 1

>Something minor, viewing cards in the vault doesn't seem to have any organization
This is true. At the moment they're just sorted by id, which isnt very user friendly. I'll add in some sorting buttons and search/filters soon.

I'm really not.

Well dude with all that said and done I think your game has potential but it needs some work.

Both tomes has some pacing issues and require a lot of balance, but then again we need more cards to be able to actually do some deep analisis in how and the number and quality of the starter cards really dont make me feel like grinding for more.

The UI needs to be more clear, like, a lot more clear with everything. I have no idea the rarity of cards and nothing really is self explanatory, now being a veteran card player I could figure shit out but the dumb masses will not.

Now do not take this personal but I really dont think you can sell your game, not with Hearth Stone and Magic the Gathering (both of them suck) and that mobile card game with kawaii anime tiddies come soon, all being F2P. What your game has and they do not and what could actually give you some sort of edge is being able to trade cards.

Also we deserve some gift for being so helpful!

>tfw Hex TCG is actually really good but nobody will play it because people don't want actual depth or strategy in a card game, they just want a time killer

Can I opt-out of the weekly free cards? I'm no longer interested in the game because I found it not really fun.

not that guy, but I'm definitely gonna disagree with you there. Mana is used much differently, and isn't a guaranteed larger resource every turn if you spend it. Card interaction is different too

True.
I admit my only card game knowledge overall is MtG, PTCG, and a bit of YGO with bits of watching people play some of those other ones that start up and die within a year.

That doesn't sound bad. Can still win if you've got a head up on the enemy. Doesn't seem like that happens often from the little I've watched.
I should really redownload it and try it again, all I did was the tutorial and a tiny bit of the vs ai stuff, but I felt lost and stuck even knowing if I'd have a chance with all the expansions and stuff with these freebie cards.

>I'm really not.
and here I thought not all game devs were delusional, pathological liars...

>people don't want actual depth or strategy in a card game
internet killed this, now every tcg is "follow the meta" or "counter the meta while adding some personal flavor to ur deck :)"

Oh and please, please add a graveyard. I cant stand HS for the lack of one.

Hoping your still sending copies

What is the reasoning behind making yet another card game, out of all the games you could have made?

What is the reasoning behind making (thing you enjoy), out of all the (things) you could have made?

Just based on what I've seen so far it looks like it can fill a niche of players who want a simple game where you can actually trade cards. Hearthstone doesn't let you do that. MTG is complicated in comparison and the not at all user friendly in the versions where you can trade with other players.

Given the Steam Market and it's economy where you can sell rarer emotes for dollars, a card game with a decent rarity/drop system could get popular over time. Look at CS:GO, where guns can sell for hundreds of dollars and even thousands of dollars. A card game that has enough cards and a good enough UI can aspire to be like that.

Sure, but everything in the market that has some sort of value comes from popular games. I can tell you that some indie cards are worth nothing but the value of the gems you can get from them.

What I am saying is that the game needs to be good in order to get monies from the market.

HEX is too expensive. even as a half-priced MTG, I still find it incredibly daunting to get even an inexpensive deck that can deal with the current meta. For limited play, I don't always have several consecutive hours to do a draft, and evo is a complete waste of money ans isn't even that fun.

I'd probably play HEX if the more expensive meta-defining decks were closer to $25 to $50 rather than $250 to $500.

>$250 to $500
Fucking what?
Even most MtG decks are maybe 100 bucks at the highest.

Hearthstone is fun, but it's really casual and RNG decides who wins more often than not. They almost never nerf cards, and buffing shit is unheard of, so when the meta gets stale people get pissy pretty quickly if they don't like the way it ended up. It's an extremely simple card game, and fun if you're OK with losing to random effects or bullshit combos.

I'd say the "best" thing about Hearthstone is that it's extremely simple, but that's also it's downfall. The real "gimmick" for it is that since it's digital only it can do shit like have cards that say "summon a random 2-drop minion" as an effect, and the game just randomly picks one without wasting time on dicerolls and shit. The problem with it is that the game has too much RNG potential, like there's a 2 mana 0/7 that destroys the whole board at the start of the player who has it's turn, so if the RNG summons one it can fuck you up. A 2 mana minion should have 2/3 or 3/2 stats at most normally, but RNG considers a 3/4 minion that costs 2 on your current turn and 1 on your next turn as only costing 2 for RNG purposes, so you can lose when that happens and they just get overwhelming value from something that was completely random.

some key differences
>trading cards
>mana system that entirely changes based on type of deck chosen
>cards dont damage each other on attack, more turn based (think pokemon)
>not made by a multi billion dollar company, is a passion project by a solo dev
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I'm writing a book, and figured a card game would be a great way to take snippets of story/lore out of it and sprinkle it around a game.

While I agree with you, some cards are selling on the market for $70 already. Some are listed higher, but the most expensive I've seen sold was $70.

>Hearthstone is fun, but it's really casual and RNG decides who wins more often than not.
To be fair, every card game has a small degree of RNG, though I can see what you mean from the bits I've seen.
I dunno, maybe I'll see about dabbling with it again and maybe I'll make it to actually playing with other people.

Was there a spike recently? Or are you more talking limited, legacy, and stuff?

Yeah, but most of those cards are vastly older. I was considering standard, but I haven't been in the loop there the last couple years.

That price range definitely sounds outside of standard.

steamcommunity.com/id/bigpizzapie/

>To be fair, every card game has a small degree of RNG

Not if you know how to suffle...

for a second there I thought that regular ass cards people would have from other games would be used as card in game and that sounded fucking awesome

still a neat idea to have tradeable cards.

>Was there a spike recently? Or are you more talking limited, legacy, and stuff?
I'm not that user, but yeah - there was, because fucking Martin Shkreli decided he wanted to raise the prices so he bought all good the shit and relisted it AFAIK

>To be fair, every card game has a small degree of RNG, though I can see what you mean from the bits I've seen.
>I dunno, maybe I'll see about dabbling with it again and maybe I'll make it to actually playing with other people.
Every cardgame has RNG through stuff like card draw order, but Hearthstone takes it to a new level. A card called Yogg Saron, Hope's End literally just casts a shitload of spells at random targets, it can win you a game or lose you a game by just spamming crazy cards. It thankfully just got nerfed, which is great, because Hearthstone nerfs stuff 2 or 3 times a year at most. Now when it kills itself (which it usually does) it'll stop casting spells, instead of casting tons of spells from beyond the grave.

If you want to see the worst RNG swings in the history of card games, just check out Yogg Saron highlights on youtube.

On the flipside you have good RNG cards such as nzoth. Ignoring that it's broken in a sense that it can summon 6 minions, but yeah.

For the most part Hearthstone devs are fucking retarded and don't give a fuck. They want people from behind to still have a chance.

>the games that make the most money on steam are the ones with marketable
>guy makes a game that centers around marketable items
>gives it away for free to get a higher marketbase

You're a clever guy.

steamcommunity.com/id/CptPatch

>Being "that guy"

That's fucking nuts. I swear just two years ago 80-100 bucks at most might not have given you an absolute top tier deck, but at least a moderately competitive one.

>A card called Yogg Saron, Hope's End literally just casts a shitload of spells at random targets
That sounds hilarious and I'd honestly not care if that card won or lost me a game, regardless of who played it just for how hilarious it is.

I wouldn't exactly call N'Zoth an RNG card. It's true that if it has a pool of more than 6 minions to summon it'll randomly pick them, but the RNG between "Summon a 5/7 and 6 mediocre minions" and "Summon a 5/7 and 6 decent minions" isn't actually that big.

N'zoth is cool, but it's yet another "play cards that stall all game to win with your 10 mana card" deck type, right next to C'thun and Anyfin Can Happen. Good RNG is stuff that has varience without completely swinging games, like the amazing Discover mechanic, which lets you pick 1 of 3 cards to add to your hand. Yes the 3 cards and randomly generated, but the best of 3 random cards is generally going to be pretty good, and drawing a card doesn't swing the game the same way casting 20 spells randomly will.

Thanks man. I'll be sure to check it out.

steamcommunity.com/id/lplpflkhp

hey i cant play because i'm vac banned on tf2?

>That sounds hilarious and I'd honestly not care if that card won or lost me a game, regardless of who played it just for how hilarious it is.
That's completely true, I thought the same thing. However, the card is too strong even with the RNG and in the meta we've had for the past half of a year Yogg was in several of the best decks in the game, which means you can see Yogg over and over again. It's a novelty thing, it's hilarious and fun to watch the first dozen times, but it wears off and eventually you'll want to actually play the game instead of the recently ended trend of "both players stall for 10-15 turns and then Yogg or even 2 Yoggs decide the winner of the game".

They DID just nerf the card, but highlights still exist and it leaves a sour spot on Hearthstone to see that several of the biggest tournaments in recent memory were decided solely by which player Yogg fucked over.

Still a valid RNG card to bring up. Another would be Murloc Knight. Even if it summons a 1/1 it's not so bad. Disappointing, but it's still a 6 5/6 which is alright for a losing outcome. It's unfortunate when Blizzard goes balls deep on 'Everyone should be able to win from far back!' so you can summon himself or the one that draws a card when a murloc dies.

Might as well.

Ty

Holy shit that was quick, thanks dev.

steamcommunity.com/id/ancurtis

I like card games

Murloc Knight is completely different, and an example of bad rng. It's a swing card, where the game is decided based on whether you roll to get a 1/1 or something better like a 3/4 with charge or a 2/5 that might draw you a card, or another 3/4 Murloc Knight.

I think Blizzard is learning their lesson a bit though. They changed Tuskar Totemic from a card that can swing a game into a card that still uses RNG, but no longer massively swings games. I think the new Tuskar really should have been a 3/3 to compensate, but even the currently nerfed version isn't unplayable.

OP, if you see this if you come back, make sure you nerf/buff cards when needed without going crazy by buffing and nerfing based on knee-jerk reactions.

steamcommunity.com/id/derzak_known

Thanks in advance, OP.

steamcommunity.com/id/afrovolcano

card games are fun

is there a dinosaur class?

They don't bother banning cards. Hearthstone now has a Standard Format, where cards outside of the original Classic Set only stay for 2 years. That's basically an excuse to not nerf shit, if a card is not clearly broken somehow they'll ignore it and 2 years later it'll no longer matter to them if it's broken or not. A card called Dr. Boom was insanely broken, and will always remain broken in Wild Mode, the graveyard of Hearthstone where you can play using ANY card, even ones out of standard (but if you don't use OP shit you'll die)!

There are a bunch of reasons they avoid nerfs. They don't like messing with the game, they like to leave it and watch it develop on it's own. If they DO nerf shit, they have to issue card-currency refunds to anyone who has the card and wants the in-game refund instead. They don't want to have to change shit in the first place.

Yogg got nerfed, but the current version is still very swingy. Certainly a fun card to watch, but it'll almost ALWAYS piss one player off.

A little late for that.

>Hearthstone now has a Standard Format, where cards outside of the original Classic Set only stay for 2 years.
To be fair, it is needed to prevent the game from becoming bloated and harder to balance. No excuse to not ban (or nerf) obviously busted cards recently released.
This wild mode sounds like ass unless you're looking to find moronic builds and crazy combos to die to.

>There are a bunch of reasons they avoid nerfs. They don't like messing with the game, they like to leave it and watch it develop on it's own.
Understandable, since in most card games you can't exactly nerf a piece of paper. That's why bans exist though.

> it'll almost ALWAYS piss one player off
Those are the people I'd laugh at simply because they're taking a card game way too seriously.

steamcommunity.com/id/lvispo

steamcommunity.com/id/nerdsgeticed

If they ban cards then they're admitting a card is too op. They never want to admit that which is why cards are rarely changed.
>but muh users on break will come back with their deck being nerfed
>we want the meta to settle itself despite 6 months later the meta not changing
Are the two Blizzard's main reason on not nerfing cards.

If you're still here OP, I'd gladly try it out.
