I'd say the dying started 2011, when the paywall was removed. Servers were filled with penniless russians and other simian-men with little understanding of things like teamwork became the main population
Hats and mannconomy didn't kill tf2 per-se. The fact that they were made more valuable than gameplay did. People were more interested in getting rare effects and other stupid shit through gambling, a type of gameplay globally more popular than team-based shooting to capture areas or flags. Playing games simply became pastime to get more boxes and shit.
Then CS:GO's gambling system happened. Garbage way more valuable on the market than hats. CS:GO's one armed bandit beat TF2's and the world flocked to it, leaving only a bunch of kids and russians to populate servers.
The final nail was catering to the pubfaggot. I don't know what exactly killed the community servers, but I would wager it was putting the tab behind an options menu. In the beginning the way to get on a server was to pick it from a list. Now faggots just press quickplay to get on a server.
What killed it for me was what happened to the major community. I don't know what happened to the people who played tf2 for tf2, but they're gone. Replaced by a bunch of idiots who leave a match the moment they are losing.

Tf2 did die all those times but for different people. I stuck with it until last year then I gave up.

Mountain Lab is my favorite aesthetically speaking. There's something that makes the contrast between the outside and RED's base work so well, as well as the somewhat dark skybox.

Most Halloween maps are also some of my favorite. Halloween has always been my favorite festivity and having the TF2 team put so much effort in them years ago filled my inner child with joy. I couldn't possibly count how many times I played Mann Manor, Eyeaduct and Ghost Fort during their respective events. Helltower was pretty good too, but it lacked the comfy feel of the other Halloween maps.

And shit, I forgot about Ghost Town and its Wave 666 MvM thing. That was also pretty fun.

I think the devs and writers did a very good job with the gameplay, writing and visual design. Would it be worth investing in setting up a custom TF2 server centered around just a good pub experience? I'm talking good stock and community map rotation, and maybe some other plugins to just make it a decent experience overall to counter the shit matchmaking.

Of course, I was thinking either Dallas or Chigago to accomodate both east and west coast players alike. I just want a good community server that people would actually want to play on. There'd be a rotation of regular maps and "fun" maps as well, all based on player votes. Other things would be left to vote as well (alltalk, micspam, random crits, etc.) so it's not completely locked

I personally use VLC though other audio reproduction programs also work . There's proper guides out there on how to set it up but it basically goes

It has more problems when you start really getting into it. The way you make progress in the game is spending hours just to get a CHANCE at something half decent, or pay up. A good progression system can make or break a game.

He doesn't need a damage nerf, he needs a damage fix. Post Pyro update, his flames hit detection is wonky as fuck and doesn't check for collision nearly as much as it used to, resulting in almost always doing full damage, even if spinning in a circle while flaming.
