Wizards are ridiculously powerful in PoE, especially as the game goes on further. Many realize this truth when they find the COLD FIREBALL OF DOOM but their spell selection is great from level 1 to the end.

It's not meant for tanks. Wizard's double works only on dedicated tanks who hoard deflection, otherwise you're going to get hit anyway if you don't use a shield. Carow Golan is meant for those who do not use a shield and have not taken the cautious attack talent and it effectively replaces it. Its perfect for monks and any 2h wielders.

Early levels wizards are chill fog - combusting wound machines. They only really graduate from that at level 9 when they get new actual usefull shit, and the accuracy to actually land anything

priests of eothas are still directly linked to fire, and their signature skill makes them immune to fear. There's some overlap, but magran is more geared toward civilization and progress, whereas Eothas cares more about justice and righteousness.

Of course Eothas is the god of Fire. After he had the god burned out of him, all that's left is fire!

Realistically speaking you only need to cast one lvl 1 spell and one lvl 2 spell to kill any group as a wizard, for a long while, so they're relatively frugal.

Unless you are doing the "Grab all companions at level 1", he should be fine with 1 spell an encounter.

If you are doing the grab all companions at level 1 stupidity, then what you need to do is abuse the Wizard by spamming all the AoE and wound/CC spells in combat, while abusing the priest's invincibility/shelter whatever spell at level 1 to block doors, so that your shit-stick companions can slowly kill the groups to allow you to clear the castle.

Old tactic before retraining.

Grab the first 4 companions, cheese through the castle to enter stronghold mode to grab the next 4 companions. Because you are level 1, they are all level 1 so you don't get stuck with autoleveling garbage.

Not necessary anymore due to retraining but it is fun. Easiest if your MC is a priest because you can abuse withdraw with Durance.

Well, normally what happened was you grab Grieving Mother at level 6 or so. So then she is stuck with the worst possible garbage abilities and is unusable. Same with Pallagina who the autoleveling decides should use both guns and swords and maybe some tanking and why not some laying on hands specialization.

So it was a necessary evil to actually use certain companions.

All companions start level 1 since version 2.0 iirc

You want perception and Int for CC, and perception and Might for damage. Unless you can win fights from auto attacking your spells aren't going to do much without debuffing the enemies first.

Chill Fog has several advantage over Blackened Sight.

1. It applies the affliction every 2-3 seconds, so you don't need good accuracy.

2. It's the best level 1 spell. The only other spell that you might want to reserve level 1 usage for is slicken. There are more spells at level 2 that you might want to use aside from Blackened sight.

3. It's nearly double the radius.

It cockblocks you really hard in some fights though, while Blackened Sight doesn't hit friendlies.

If you have Durance, just dress him in plate, give him a large shield, take the Hold the Line talent and he'll make a decent secondary tank. Just send him along with Eder in the general direction of the enemy and he'll be fine most of the time. Priest tanks can cast while getting pounded just fine.

Being a ranger will be more conducive to a ranged character. There are more fighter skills that wont work in your favor than those that will. Meanwhile ranger can stack flanking bonuses, crit the shit out of people with mark and can talent so that they do more crits to people who current have a dot on them. You also get a two cast per encounter spell to apply dots

Only real downside would be that if your pet dies you lose 10 accuracy so you have to micro manage it a little. But if you aren't playing on POTD almost any build is viable. Even a wonky ass ranged fighter

I was actually planning on taking ranger minor class talents instead of the more "fighty" fighter ones. Probably retarded, but at this stage I want to try to see whether or not it's going to work.

As fighter you get a passive health regen (which you wont be taking a damage if you're at range) and most of your talents are going to be concerned with CCing at melee range or just beefing up your defenses

Almost every other class in the game would be better for a gunner oriented character. Hell priests of Mag have rifles as their intended weapons, Chanters get a spell that increases reload time by 20% which stacks with the talented reload by 20%

Clearing the first and the second level with xaurips should be fine. You're going to get destroyed on the third level by ogres, so don't go there.

You can do pretty much anything you want on story mode, but Fighters are still ineffective at range. The accuracy spell and the damage bonus are the only Fighter skills that a ranged character can take advantage of.

Ranged rogue works fine. Wont pull as much damage but you benefit from the flanking and stealth bonuses all the same

Ranges rogue was actually better with ranged weapons than ranger before 3.0 and it is still pretty strong.

Why replay the whole thing? You should have an automatic save made right before you jump into the hole, it even says "Pre-Endgame" or something like that. Load it up and go talk to your statfu. You can upscale the content if you want.

The Sanitarium doesn't have any zombies besides the wicht wing. The flesh golems are zombie-like, but also completely reliable until Thaos jumped into their bodies.

Heritage Hill was an Engwithan artifact that long predates modern animancy. No one who studied it could even turn it on; Thaos could easily have done what he did regardless.

It's implied that a lot (though surely not all) of animancy's failures are due to the Leaden Key sabotage.

Is the first part worth replaying to prepare for 2nd?

I started it dozen times and always dropped it without even entering first city, at best capturing the keep for yourself - as the story is boring, characters uninteresting and the only interesting part: figuring out combat mechanics and stats gets boring fast too so i rather reroll than continue. I finished BG1+2 multiple times, neer had issue with DA:Origins, but PoE is just.. feels somehow lacking. Even Temple of the Elementary Evil feels more fun than it.

Pretty much yes. Greek gods were bullies who tormented mankind and whom you paid homage to only out of fear of them dicking you over. They played second fiddle to the titans and are a good analogy to Pillars's pantheon of fake gods

Hopefully in the future the old gods will become more relevant and you will be able to make priests to them. They may not act as often as the fake gods but they were genuine.

You could try replacing the Sage with Eb. If you can get her disposition up you get this badass combo attack between her and your character that can be used Once Per Rest. It will lift your entire party in the air to safety while pulsing healing on them and pulsing damage on a rather large area on enemies.

It is a fantastic oh shit skill that saved me against Havoc.

I'm on PoTD and I have found melee to be pretty useless, at least compared to casters.
By the time melees have done one hit my casters have already destroyed the battlefield with instant crit aoes of doom
It's also been a breeze so faron Ironman with no WM meta knowledge because everything is always perma stunned, prone, paralyzed or petrified before they get the chance to actually do something to anyone but poor Edér the martyr, who has an easy time holding off his own anyways
