t. Part time admin

It's a good show

I've tried Manjaro once or twice but I was much worse at using linux back then. Why do you use Manjaro?

First you fucked up by letting that happen. You didn't opt out of it or tell it to fuck off while you still had the chance. You didn't have updates disabled, otherwise it wouldn't have happened unless you opted in by actively choosing to install that update on your own.

Then you fucked up by choosing Debian, an SJW infested distribution with an insane package manager.

:^)

Why didn't you do a clean install of Windows after you bought the laptop ?

Updates were disabled. I never agreed to any updates and I was sleeping while it happened. I haven't seen any SJW shit in my OS so I don't care who makes it. My package manager just werks. Stay mad.

>Updates were disabled. I never agreed to any updates and I was sleeping while it happened.
You should probably stop lying on the internet.

I'd fallen for the Arch meme but was too stupid to install it.

I didn't actually know about any of the benefits over *buntu and shit either.
But it's fast, and after a bit of messing around with it, I found out about the AUR, and how useful it is.

I guess it's just good for learning about Arch.

I'm not lying. Stay mad.

I can't stay mad if I'm not mad in the first place. But it sounds like you're projecting your anger onto an anonymous person on a Chinese sweatshop board, you should probably stop that.

But yes, you're lying. You fucked up and you don't want to own up to it. Deal with it.

Doesn't work for me. I get the "only for windows 7 or 8.1" message which makes no fucking sense since there's only one version and for windows 10.

Try turning off Fast Boot.

I guess I'm a normal fag in this regard, though sometimes sign ins take a while if the computer takes a while to connect to microsoft's botnet. This problem disappears when its not connected to the internet

>worst of all the display does not turn on after it turns off for power saving
>laptop runs flawlessly except that the screen does not turn on after it goes into power saving mode or sleep mode on its own
I remember having this problem running XP 10 years ago, have they really not fixed that issue yet? Is it even the same codebase?

>installing updates

It seems win10 is constantly installing updates. It's even worse than that windows server install I used to have.

I don't remember my Linux install being nearly as annoying, even though that had frequent updates...

>Debian is stable and well supported.
>well supported
>he thinks decades old documentations that contain a shitload of errors are well supported
kek

> windows 8 shit
> using 10

Not sure if this is bait.
Windows 8 with Classic Shell is basically a 7.

Used it for years happily.
Onedrive broke for me, so I forced a 10 upgrade, of course, bugs.

> remote call procedure failed
> windows update is stuck
> random errors
> sound bug when you have no sound coming, volume skyrockets the next time you hear something

So yeah, nice one.
Going back to 8 again.
It was working 100%, just like how 7, Vista or XP were back then.
10 is a fucking trainwreck.

I thought I will be using Enterprise with LTSB, but even though Microsoft introduced this "7$ per seat" pricing for companies, the cheapest subscription I find is 20$ in my country.

So fuck it.

Same in my university, they rolled back every Oracle/worker PC to 7/8.

Only these "shared computers" that anyone can use there use 10, and last I checked:

- It takes 1 hour for them to load.
(they are decent i5 computers)
- Office suite is buggy, barely works.

So fuck it.

> install 10 on a dell latitude + asus rog
> computer wakes up at 3am every day to do "maintenance"
> have to use all kinds of registry fuckery to keep it from happening

it's a fucking nightmare.

bit fucking gay though. literally.

>upgrade to it from 8.1
>just werks no problems
>upgrade to anniversary when it came out
>just werks no problems

well now, buying a windows 10 compatible laptop is like buying one for Linux was for decades.

back then you searched for long long hours and even then you may have ended up with some bad drivers and whatnot.

now it's Windows 10!
good luck picking a laptop, or system that works flawless.

>Dad has i3 craptop, Win7 Home
> I turn off all updates, only do things manually

I bet you see where this is going ....

> takes the free "upgrade"
> Something Happened.
> craptop cannot into Win10
> tries to revert
> No. Can. Do.
> Something Happened.

I get the call. "Son, all my important shit is on there. Get it back!"

It's hopeless. Can't boot. Can't Win7 recovery. Can't access HDD, even when placed in external enclosures, directly onto a motherboard for another workstation. No boot, no access, no joy.

Whole weekend shot. "Dad, I need another week, all of my evenings for the week. Maybe next weekend?"

"But son, NO! I haz need my computer NAO!!"

Download Win7 Ult ISO, clean HDD, fresh install, disable all updates. Make several accounts with different access levels, assign Dad a userland normie account.

> "Here pop. Take advice from one of your friends again and I will Never. Do. One minute. Tech. Support. For. You. EVER."

Another advice, make him pay for a Backblaze or Crashplan account. Backblaze is easier and more fool proof, but Crashplan has more options.

I just have Crashplan set up on every normie PC because fuck it. I just tell them how their hard drive and all backups can fail ANY TIME. ANY DAY.

And they finally cough up the cash.

> School laptop with an i5

Does wine support most windows programs?

>Can't access HDD, even when placed in external enclosures, directly onto a motherboard for another workstation.
How is this fucking possible? Did somehow the Win10 installation corrupted the filesystem?
>Make several accounts with different access levels
You should have done that in first place.

>Does wine support most windows programs?
Wine is a joke but it works most of times.

>it works for me
The end.

you probably won't care but the sleep issue is caused by ssd's, by defualt windows10 will hibernate a hdd when going sleep, which ssd's really don't like and won't "wake up", change the hibernate settings in power options, should solve the issue

>Does wine support most windows programs?
Vmware Workstation, son.
Not even kidding.

Or if you are a fucking faggot 12 year old "muh freedom" tard, you can use KVM + libvirt for comfy emulation.

There is Virtualbox too, but it's 100% trash.

that corruption sounds fucking weird.
it would never happen from updates.

and if the disk still works, user fucked up.
even if the FS gets corrupted, chkdsk would fix it.

I have a workstation pro license, if i virtualize windows 10, will it use alot of battery?

No. And if you have any VT instructions, it should not be any really slower.

>CS
>Windows

Pretty disgusting honestly.

they give ms products for students + university for free, so it makes sense.

>How is this fucking possible?

Honestly? I don't know. I wasn't there when the "upgrade" failed. I got the call the next day. I am clear that "Something Happened" and that some option to revert back to Win7 was offered. I am very fuzzy on what actually happened, including if/how/when the system rebooted properly or if it got powered down by the user. In the middle of trying to revert. (that's my top guess: he got tired of waiting and powered off the system; I'll never know)

If I would have had more time, I would have investigated more recovery options. Frankly, my dad is an asshole, so I don't really care if his Trump porn collection got erased. What he considered "important" data includes shit like his email folder for all the "proof" that Obama was born in Kenya.

Anyway, besides all that,
> should have done that in first place

I actually had. But, over the years he got cockblocked enough by the admin controls that I gave him the password so he could do other simple shit without bothering me. It's over a two hour drive to his house whenever there's drama, and I became complacent since 2011 that almost nothing went wrong, and never anything serious.

Until he was told "FREE WINDOWS!!!" and he came in his pants because it was FREE! and BETTER!

Now he's back to a user account and I won't give him the admin password. Yet. Eventually I'll get so fucking tired of his whining that I'll have to give it to him just so he can update his antivirus or some such retarded shit.

But, that's a microsoft problem and a user problem, not only a Win 10 problem.

What if you would set up everything, did an image of his system partition and you store it on the pc somewhere? Like a hidden partition or something?

It wasn't an "update failed."

It was a complete conversion of a Win7 Home install that was five years old into Win10. That failed. Then the system tried to return to the state Win7 was in when the win10 conversion was attempted.

As per here: My dad won't tell me (he's too tech illiterate to tell me anyway) what he actually did. He knows better than to power off a system when it's doing something; I think he's too embarrassed to tell me that's what he did.

Trust me. It was completely fucked. I've recovered a lot of shit from a lot of operating systems over the last 20 years.

Something Happened. That's all I'll ever know. I even suggested he buy a new HDD that I could install on and spend more time trying to recover what I could from his original HDD, but he's autistic and spastic as all fuck when it comes to spending money or taking the time necessary to do a job. He sees TV detectives recover hard drives every night on the TV in less than 3 minutes. He can't comprehend why it takes longer in Reality.

This isn;t a Win10 story anymore. Good night folks.

>an image of his system

I did. I do. Doesn't help with data recovery unless it gets imaged every night.

Nope.

In this case, I fresh installed Win7 Ult to replace his old Win7 Home; I could have written a win7 Home image from about 2013 to just make the laptop work. Yes, that fresh Win7 Ult install with all drives in place is imaged, but I will not image it for him each day Just In Case. And he is too stupid and spastic to handle it himself. He already ignored years worth of advice & training on how to back up his important data. He chose to ignore it, he can eat the pain.

i have a feeling you are just bad with computers

Installed Windows 10 whilst it was still in beta a couple of weeks before official launch.

Other than a few minor issues I had with DS3Windows ( A third party program for mimicking Xinput in PS4 controller ) Which was fixed in a couple of months, everything worked.

Still running that same installation, no problems yet.

How would the hdd clicking have anything to do with the OS. I bet your disk is warped, and I hope it explodes and you lose your data. Because you are an idiot.

I can buy a laptop more powerful, and with the money I save I can buy any OS I want. People on this board complain about windows because reasons, I have never seen any huge problems with it, with business or home use. I bought enterprise, did a fresh install, and it just werks. With the money I saved from not buying a mac, I even made my wife a prime steak dinner.

>>No option to postpone
Ill take stuff that never happened for 200...

Not only that, the $7 one is the E3 package which only allows for installation of Windows 10 Enterprise non LTSB version. To get LTSB you need to get the E5 package.

Well, even Enterprise would work with "Defer Upgrades", but I can't find any vendor that would sell it in Europe.

We would buy a few licenses.
Would, if we could.

Serious question, is this bait or are you just that retarded?

What the fuck are you talking about?

If you simply intend to defer upgrades, pro also have that feature. Enterprise non LTSB still come with Cortana, Edge and other stuff that I simply delete straight off the WindowsApps/SystemApps folder.
