aren't i5 just as good as i7's in most cases?

sup

excellent choice my friend

If your "most cases" is browsing facebook, then even i3 is just as good.

This is what the poorfags want you to belive to justify themself that an i5 is good.

Do ultralow voltage i7s count?

>i7 on my machine
>dual core
>hyperthreading
>2.4Ghz (when turbo'ed)
Yeah, fucking i5 cucks get a reel CPU

It's an i7.

>mobile i7

who gives a fuck? It's a laptop CPU.

It's an i7 so this is my thread
i5's need not apply

>i5's need not apply
don't worry, i've got that 6 core 5820k.

a dual core i7 is like a midget tranny. Isn't one fetish enough?

i3 gatecrashing and there's nothing you can do about it

amdcuck here i hate my life

ofc, you have ampoo

I7 is a meme

AMD esta acabado y en bancarrota!!!

The difference is hyber-threading. i5's are 4C no HT, i7's are 4C + HT.

>tfw had an i3 2100 for 5 years
Feels so good not being bottlenecked anymore

5930k master race here.
It might be the last CPU I ever need to buy at this rate of progress

Am welcome: y/n?

>i7's are 4C + HT.
i'd like to have a word with you

i7s don't always have 4 cores, but they always are better than what the other guy has

my league of lego gaymen machin

The fuck are you on about? Even Atoms can browse Fagbook just fine, doesn't take anything special to look at Normiebook

>i7's are 4C + HT
I'd like to have a word with you

Yeah, the LGA 1366 / 2011 stuff is 4+ core, but my point is i5 = no HT. i7 = HT.

Also, only 6 cores? How cute...

ITT: plebs that watched Linus Shill Tip videos and think they know anything

>Also, only 6 cores? How cute...

how many do you have

Yeah but the LGA 1366/2011 stuff isn't all i7's so it's obviously crap

>he has amd

kek

Is-s my i7 welcome here?

are you retarded?
When he said
>Also, only 6 cores? How cute...
He was talking about my 5820k. Which is 6 haswell-e cores with hyper threading, and clocked at 4.4GHz daily.

Enough.

Xeon > i7

My APU1D4 is a T-40, yes, but see pic related.

Lol that garbage single core performance though.

If I needed more cores i'd have gone for a Xeon ES myself.

>2.2ghz
>0% utilisation
Living the dream

>Xeon > i7
except when it comes to performance, lol

>not an i7
AHAHAHAHAHAHAH get out

>AHAHAHAHAHAHAH get out

Op post says
>Xeon is welcome too.

What's this thread about anyways?

>garbage single core performance
Guess it's a good thing that most of what I do is multi-threaded then.

u wot m8?

i7's are re-binned Xeons, so there's that...

Why, you can't handle multiple sockets?

Here's another one

I thought xeons were rebinned i7s? Because they won the lottery and are super reliable or something?

>I thought xeons were rebinned i7s? Because they won the lottery and are super reliable or something?
From what I recall, i7's start off as Xeon E3's / E5's, and are re-binned to either backfill orders, or for whatever other reason Intel can think of.

It's easier to cut out something on a CPU then it is to make a 2nd run without the item.

yeah they just disable features for the i7s.

There is zero point creating two different designs if you can just create one product line and disable features for the non-server SKUs.

Well aren't you just a piece of shit

>daily good goy thread

It's not our fault Intel uses jewish tricks

FX 8320 in one rig, i5 4430 in a dif machine. Come at me.

i7 6600U whatever that is

It's a beast of a cpu though

i will now make grown men infuriated over the parts in my comuter.

not really, my laptop's cpu is 37% faster and doesn't feel that beastly; feels like my 3 year old midrange desktop in terms of raw CPU power

>grown men
>Cred Forums
wew lad...

*biologically grown men
Cred Forums cant be THAT attractive to children

The only people who think a laptop i7 is "beastly" are upgrading from core2duos or similar shit CPUs.

Or similarly old mobile CPUs which were even more shit.

When you compare shit to something modern, it's gonna feel pretty good, but a laptop i7 compared to even a desktop i5 is just a joke.

Some of us need to get out of the basement every now and then

>*biologically grown men
Fair enough.

>Cred Forums cant be THAT attractive to children
Have you seen the quality of threads over the years?

I wasn't bragging or anything, it really is a powerful laptop cpu but nothing special

It's dual core, truly not a powerful thing

>haivng a use for a powerful CPU means I dont leave the basement.

uhh okay?

Get off your horses you dick

I'm in my comfy bed on my laptop w/i7 and not on a horse.

>not working at home
>not having a 10k/month or more job
i feel sorry for you desu

I have the same CPU.

I found out it actually has an unlocked multiplier recently. Feels good.

Owner of a Vintage Core i7 920, reporting in! Welcome to the club, user! :)

Ableton does but it doesn't need to because it's just fucking audio encoding

I used to be stable at 5.2ghz 1.51V but not anymore.
I wonder why that is

What the fuck is up with that water cooling loop?

Absolutely nothing.

AMD E1 mobile chips are better then 2nd generation i7

Not even in the wildest AMD fanboys' dream's is this true.

Upgraded from an FX-8320 to 6700k.
Also went from 1600 DDR3 to 3200 DDR4.

Shit just happens, I didn't know you could open browsers or text documents faster but you can.

Not just HT, an i7 will typically have more cache

the difference HT makes on a i7 is like having an extra core

you can turn HT off and get better clocks but not worth it

time for an upgrade soon?

Who else comfy x58 Xeon here?

No, you bought a gaming laptop and installed linux. Windows 10 for games. If you aren't gaming why did you buy a gaming laptop

also post cinebench scores

unless you need more cores, no point, 6800k or 6850k would just give you a generic ~15-20% IPC improvement, but that's about it.

All done at a conservative 4.4ghz I could push the chip much harder but I want it to last me a few more years. There is considerable fluctuation between runs though.

I hope you dont expect that to last more than a year or two at those speeds.

What are these 57 multipliers and how is it possible ?

Was comfy a while ago

Paid 100 bucks for this chip, I'll live if it goes up in smoke. And sub 1.35VCore is generally considered safe for X58 Xeons.
nice score tho

dual xeon master race reporting in

x58 was the shit back in the day ran my i7 930 at 4.2ghz all day every day didn't notice any degradation.

quad core at 4.2GHz is not a hex core at 4.5GHz, just saying.

It's been a really good purchase.
Bought this system 6 fucking years ago and it's going strong. Too bad there is no real SATA3 support and my mainboard has shitty a Realtek NIC.
It's going to be expensive to upgrade in ~1 year. No way I'm not getting at least another hex

I sold off most of my X58 mobos when they were selling for $200 a piece on ebay, you might be able to get a bit of money to help with the upgrade if the prices are still decent

That's a lot of bad going on all in one place.

Well, I have a shitty i7 4500U
And regret every single day of my purchase.

>small penis nerd loser's bragging thread
pathetic.
enjoy dying a lonely virgins.

I don't really play games, but I don't want a piece of shit non-performant machine even if it's just my bedposting machine

I dont get this thread, theyre more expensive and slower than the compared i5s

Xenons are even shittier unless you work for nasa. What are you people doing even ? Just buying to grow your internet dick ?

the name and sticker is tuff fuck off cunt

7 is more than 5, retard.
On what planet would and i5 beat a i7?

>Xenons are even shittier unless you work for nasa
What did he mean by this

>hating on xeons
lmao at this poorfag

>t. AMD poorfag

>xenons
so poor he doesn't even know their name

>so poor he doesn't even know their name
to be fair when I was 14 I didn't know they weren't called Xenons either. People must have thought I was pretty dim

Laptop i7s count, right?

And what a 2 years it's been

i5's are only relevant for gaming.
If your doing any kind of CPU heavy work your gonna want an i7.
Guess you have to be a proud owner of an i7 to understand.

First benchmarks of Bristol Ridge APUs already show that they are faster than your precious i7-6700K CPUs.

hwbot.org/submission/3320499

X5650 for $100 or wait for kaby and do a full upgrade?

i have a 6700k and I spend most my time shitposting

Should I kill myself?

How do you do, my fellow kids?

>AMD is completely honest with their benchmarks.
I will believe it when they launch it to consumers.

1-2 minutes of difference, that is the cooldown for posting rajesh. Be less obvious next time or you wont get paid

Na bro, i5 is fine. Not the best but perfectly fine.

I have Xeon e3 1231 v3 bclk over clock to 4.0ghz and it's fucking sick

this right here. most people don't even think about it, but it does help a lot.

I have a 4770HQ with the 128MB L4 cache and it blows the other haswell i7's out of the water by 5-10%!

2.6ghz max speed lol nice single thread performance

Only thing I've seen with higher scores are dual 2699v4's OC'd and some E7 xeon setups.

>Hai guys buyers remorese thread
That hyper threading you never needed but paid 700 bucks for treating you well user? ;^]

Still better than AMD single thread performance.

i7 920 was the most influential processor who agrees

Hahaha got them there kek

tyrannosaurus rekt

My Xeon was cheaper than i5 in my country 330 compared to 380

>Only thing I've seen with higher scores are dual 2699v4's OC'd and some E7 xeon setups.
This is a 2699v4 ES overclocked 3%
(lookup QHUP)

Linus did a quad E7 system and that only cinebenched a 6000. It cost $40,000. My system cost $3500ish

Here's my completed PC Part Picker
pcpartpicker.com/b/b8LD4D

Haha this thread is literally just a big circlejerk.

You gotta get off every now and then mate

best i5 vs best i7 = same performance in gaming.

now make me fall for the i7 and more than 4cores meme, dear core elitsts. i'm waiting

i have amd fx 6300 so i am more cucked than you

Xeon was cheaper than i5 in my country

you'll be able to run waifu2x 20% faster with an i7

world record is with 4x E7 8890v4, 96 cores, 192 threads, 2.4GHz, 8,299CB

Run cinebench, it is common knowledge that i5 is best value for gaming.
Productivity wise i7 is better.
$200 doesn't usually matter to professionals.

>It cost $40,000
then he overspent.

E7-8890v4 cost ~$7k for retail CPUs, four of them is ~$28k.
Unless he just overspent like crazy on a huge SSD array or something, there is no reason to spend over ~$35k including rack, chassis, etc.

And as we know, you can generally find ES's if you look hard enough. The 8890v4 ES's go for a few thousand a pop, but still generally half off the retail cost.

Wow only 64% faster than me

>He overspent
Yeah I'm sure he paid for all of that.

He doesn't even know what he's doing half the time, he just reads the marketing blurb and skims how things function.

Also, he's a faggot.

Disagree.
There have been a very many processors that caught savvy consumers attention.

I imagine it has to do with the increased overhead from the complexity of quad socket CPU with 4-way quad channel memory.

Just how dual 2699v4 wont be double a single 2699v4. Except it gets even worse with a 4 socket system.

...

fuck yourself jordan

Not even close (if we're talking about PC processors)
In terms of revolutionary processors, the 386 is about king shit.

The next more revolutionary is the original Pentium

Then the Athlon 64

Arguably, the Core2Quad is next

After that it's all incremental advancements.

agreed even sandybridge 2500k is more influential.

Mfw you've only owned one i7 and it was the 920

Mfw you've been out of work since you bought that rig and still can't afford to upgrade

Mfw 6th gen pentium dual cores rape your cpu.

>Arguably, the Core2Quad is next
I want to know who was in charge of naming the core2quad.
You would expect 2 quad cores.

Because before the core2 was the core
The original core was just the evolution of a pentium-m, which was the evolution of the pentium3
Original core was 32bit only.
But the naming of the core2 was pretty shit
but they had prescedent, with the pentium][.

what i7 cpu should i get Cred Forums for using software synthesizers and daws

To be fair, the Core2duo CPUs were out 6 months before the quad cores.

Also, it was in reference to the core architecture, this being the 2nd iteration.

The naming certainly was shit, but i kinda get it.

Oh okay silly me, didn't realize there was a coreduo.
Because I would have called it the CoreDuo and CoreQuad.
i3/i5/i7 have been reusing front names though.

Oh hai.

Speaking of i7s and Xeons, I have an LGA 1366 board I need to get built up, but the problem is I need to flash the bastard with a newer bios, because the current bios only accepts C0 stepping i7 chips.

Is worth the risk buying ES Xeons to chinks on eBay?

Yea, proccessors don't really die. It's PSU's and HDD's that you need to watch.
Motherboards and gpu's can sometimes be bad eggs if they have been abused.

Xeon is so vague, you mean those Pentium II Xeons? Or even Xeon Phi? You can build a machine with a Celeron and still have a Xeon Phi on it.

Your cleartype setting is in reverse. Are you using your monitor vertically/upside-down?

I fell for the Skylake meme.

Still strong after so many years

Since i5s don't have hyper threading, and i7s do, wouldn't a task that is only coded to take advantage of 4 threads perform better on the i5? My thinking is that because the workload is distributed across all four cores on the i5, but only two cores are used on the i7 and an i7's cores aren't twice as fast an an i5's cores, then the i5 will be faster because each core is processing less information. Am I missing something? Or am I right?

hey guys

Been using Linux full time for years and somehow never managed to learn about inxl, I've always just use the files in /proc but you learn something new every day. Thanks, user.

You're wrong.

Hyperthreading is far more complicated than that, but simply put it'll use all 4 physical cores before it attempts to add workload to the 4 extra logical cores. The workload it adds to those HT threads will not run at the full speed of a normal physical core but it will still be able to run yet another workload on a thread. Modern HT is pretty great and the schedulers are on point so the performance overhead on using HT is minimal.

In all apples for apples cases where the same number of threads are being used (4 physical cores worth) they'd perform the same (with deviations between the chips taken into account) and where the i7 was able to use all 8 threads it'd outperform the 4 logical cores - however not by an infinitely large amount.

what's your voltage @ 4.4GHz user?

I just finished an OC on a 5820k @ 4.4GHz / 1.15V Core

>Infinitely large amount

Jesus I'm tired.

I meant not by a particularly large amount.

It just attempts to jam as much work into a single cycle as it can by utilising any and all available modules.

> tfw your 4690K gets the job done

I don't think I'll need more CPU muscle for the moment.

Thank you for explaining that. That makes sense.

...

Any 3770k fags here?
Tell me your OC stats, maggots.

>4.5Ghz
>0.08V offset
>55°C IDLE, 75°C full load

Should I push it to 4.7Ghz?

doesn't count

nope

If you insist on staying with your current mobo, then you can always just pony up 50 bucks and get an x5650 on eBay.

For you, sucking 4-5 dicks on CL might just be sufficient to get the dosh.

BEAUTIFUL!

>caring about RAM speed
good goy

I actually don't give a shit so long as the computer I'm using is at an i5 level. But I wanted my laptop to have four cores and so this was my only option.

>daily i7 shilling and consumer thread

>not rocking Nehalem i7
>not having Triple Channel MEME-BOARD

I literally bought the most suped up 1337 socket mobo and a 950 and after all these years im thinking of just getting the x990 as an upgrade so I can still be hipster

>tfw i7 920 on a DX58SO
>tfw 6 GB RAM in Triple Channel

Im gonna upgrade to an x5650 and 12 GBs of RAM soon though

>tfw shitpad mustard race
even if you're a poorfag there's no excuse to use a i5 unless you hate your life

Your glorious i7 definitely beats my 4.5GHz/4cores 4690k...

Excellent work Sherlock.

6700k reporting

Feelsgoodman but I do miss having an all AMD setup. Probably won't be looking into an upgrade Intel Zen + at the very earliest.

That said, 8350 may have reached the end of its rope, but my Fury X just keeps getting better and better.

Did I do good?

i have a i7 2700k, is it still good?

thinking of getting a 17 6700 (not k) what do we think?

3770k is a damn good CPU. Not much worse than Haswell. Has just about every feature the 4770k has.

It's a good overclocker, and 4.7 is certainly possible, but you might be at the point were it will need more voltage to achieve more than 4.5.

4.5 is plenty for a while to come.

You scored a whole year before Haswell fags came on the scene.

>thinking of getting a 17 6700 (not k)
An overclocked i5 6600k will easily outperform a 6700 (non-k).

Get an overclockable chip.

thats probably not stable for too much more than desktop use.

I had to push around 1.25v for 4.5GHz, and I use the same voltage for 4.4GHz, though I could probably go slightly lower.

I-is c-celeron-chan okay?

4700HQ has done it's job pretty admirably for the last 3 years.

About to upgrade to 6800k in the next month or two though.

>6800k
>About to upgrade to 6800k in the next month or two though

Unless you need more than 32GB RAM I think that's a waste. Your processor isn't all that much slower, and more than adequate for just about any task.

Wait for the next enthusiast system. If this is for gaming, just get a better video card to hold you over.

you think a 4700HQ laptop CPU
>isn't all that much slower

You're talking about a 4 core + HT laptop 45w CPU vs a 6 core + HT desktop 140W CPU.

You must think gaming and web browsing is all CPUs are good for

>ou must think gaming and web browsing is all CPUs are good for

Hey all I suggested is waiting for the next generation.

What does he need to do that a new CPU would make a significant improvement?

literally anything that would use that many cores, rendering, encoding, VMs, etc.

The cores are a good 30-40% faster and there are 2 more cores. Its a signficant upgrade, obviously if you dont do anything that will use the CPU power it's wasted, but there are a TON of things that could easily use that CPU power.

...

I have a i7 920 and I just got a 980 ti. Is it bottleneting much gpu? Should I overclock it?

Yes, that's not a bad CPU by any means. Actually it's damn good for a laptop.
I'm doing some graphics work and this thing doesn't really cut it anymore, especially now that I'm looking towards learning 3D stuff.
So an upgrade like that will be quite welcome.

i was getting min 40s in bf1 beta, i did a 3.6ghz oc and didnt get below 60s, 920 + 1060

I am posting from my 07 Q6600 comp, still works great for daily use. I think that gen of core2 and sandy bridge are the kings of long term value.

Iris 6200 man

I like the one guy talking about it as if it is the holy grail of memory, then at the very end the old dude goes, well its CLOSE to the holy grail.

Ideally it would be 5-10x faster, we really would like to see storage only 2-3x slower than DRAM, but we aren't there yet.

>mfw Kaby Lake is for the 1551 socket
Feels very good. I can upgrade a friend's i5-5600 with a beastly i7-7600 or some such in a year or so when he gets some money. I have a 6700k atm.

Intel not changing the socket is a welcome addition.
