Why would any sane person use Linux?
Especially on a laptop

price.

You are the cuck here faggot. This is not lebbit, don't just paste link and start a thread. Go back to the whatever shit hole you came from.

Then I wouldn't waste my time ricing Linux and become more productive?
Nice

What do you mean? Windows comes pre-installed for free.

Some people prefer some actual control over their OS...

Ricing is for children. It gets in the way of productivity.

should he have added some tits to that post to make it ok?

well for me it's better than windows for what i want to use it for.

>Better battery life
>A laptop isn't meant for games
>Faster experience
>Not getting fucked in the ass by Pajeets

There are tens of millions of reasons using Windows 8+ on a laptop is a horrible idea. Why is it a good idea? I can easily run office 2010 and photoshop CC 2016 (portable all-in-one exe) on Linux. Plus a laptop is just a toy anyway, don't tell me you actually do anything serious on something as inane as a laptop...

maybe you need to buy better laptops if you think theyre all that bad

It's more comfy to work on, better performance, doesn't heat up with fans blowing at max speed (like it does on Windows), better window management, a package manager, better shell integration.

>pic related my setup on my X220 at work with an external monitor / mouse. It's comfy as fuck and much better than working with one of the Win7 machines here.

>wir sind die roboter

Huh?

>for free
Oh, for the love of God...
What a dumbass.

When your system draws less resources there isn't even a need for the processor to SpeedStep up to even the maximum frequency in Linux. In fact, my processor sits at a cool 333mhz when it's max frequency is 3.0ghz. Using less system resources means using less battery, which means a longer battery life. Adaptive brightness works fine, wifi works fine, I really don't see how switching to Linux wouldn't improve your battery life unless you were using trash like Ubuntu, OpenSUSE, Mint, or Fedora in its completely unaltered vanilla state. But even then you should still see at least a 10% increase in battery life. Windows is heavy as fuck. It uses more resources than Linux with 100 youtube videos playing at the same time in firefox.

Did I say customisation? No... I said control.

I know it's bait, but because GNU/Linux is way easier to use than Windows for me. I hate clicking through menus when I can just edit a text file. I hate constantly having marketing thrown at my face, having to sign up for stupid online accounts.

Lie.

Prove me wrong.

He is right tho, software companies pay PC manufacturers to pre-install programs on Windows, which ends up making OS licence cheaper, if not free.
Remember those Dell laptops which would come with Ubuntu preinstalled a few years ago? people expected them to be way cheaper than Windows computers, when they actually ended up being more expensive.

Lenovo has a history of anti consumer practices. Im not really surprised.
It is also the reason I will never buy any lenovo laptop or motorola phone

>2 rupee have just been deposited to your Microsoft Wallet ;^)

Not sure about two menu bars though!

Is this only the Yoga?
I want to buy a x1 carbon next semester or so, should I go for a dell xps13 instead?

Summer is over, what are you still doing here?

Just makes me hate them more. Most folks hate what Lenovo has donento the Thinkpad brand.

>Linux lacks drivers
>"it's a Microsoft conspiracy! Microsoft be keeping us dooowwwwnnn!!!"
Pathetic. Freetards are worse than niggers.

At least read beyond the first few replies.

>Windows is heavy as fuck. It uses more resources than Linux with 100 youtube videos playing at the same time in firefox.
It IS heavy as fuck, yes. It's bloated, it's full of unwanted programs and processes, and it's constantly connecting to the net behind your back.

And yet Windows 10 still manages to get in average 30~40% more battery life than vanilla Linux without any extra change in settings. All of this while, as you very well say, using more resources than Linux.

It's no secret that Linux is total fucking shit at battery life. I don't know how you think that it is acceptable to have to play around with your cpu clock settings to get more battery life and that this even makes it better than Windows. There is no shame in admitting that Linux has faults and weak points that need to be addressed.

install acpid

Are you using Linux without any power management?

You are using Linux wrong if you have a longer battery life with Windblows. Learn to manage your power. I didn't fuck with my CPU clock speed either, like I said in my post that you didn't read Intel SpeedStep brings my clock down because Linux doesn't use enough resources to bring it to a higher clock speed. For mobile devices like laptops your bios should be using this feature by default, you might not have noticed it because of how shitty wingdings is at managing processor states, but mobile Intel processors only use as much power as they need for the tasks they are given. Meme OSes like Ubuntu or Mint might not include proper power management software built in because they rely on Pajeets to program their DE. But using a low overhead Linux takes a mere 20 minutes tops to set up, and should only be using between 20 and 80 MB of ram overhead.

why not

>Cred Forumsnu hipsters still buying chinkpads
>in the year 2016

What does it matter? As long as there's a http(s) in front of the url and it's not in inline text I'm happy. The linkify url is shit anyway, since it doesn't directly include the links you can't use the "link" in mpv/youtube-dl or export it elsewhere without going through the Cred Forums redirect.

I do use power management and I still get rather large variations in battery usage between Windows 10 and Linux. Notice that this applies mostly to Windows 10. Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 get worse battery life than 10, but still slightly better than Linux.

But just a few years ago it was even worse, so there's clearly been some improvements in that field. As an interesting note, on a dual boot tablet, Windows 10 gets slightly better battery life than Android while under use, but comparatively it has abysmal sleep/standby power usage. Surface users can confirm this. Then again, Android on x86 is different from ARM, so it's better to just take it as an anecdote more than an actual fact.

>tfw there's no ideal laptop to run Linux that is not a secondhand.

That's been the rule forever, Linux is always way behind on hardware support.

>and you guys wonder why it flopped

Windows 10 bricked thousands of machines

>it's never our fault, always other people's

You're on the right track to success, kid!

I looked into the dell xps 13 but the screen context based brightness you can't disable seems to be a pain in the ass.

Windows 10 drivers are shit. My wifi stops working when I close the lid and won't work again until I reboot.

Linux works flawlessly.

ITT: Triggered wincucks.

What? Windows has been doing this to me for years and all I had to do was install Linux?

wtf I hate Windows now.

DITCH LENOVO

...

I read that older thinkpads run Linux quite well. Give /tpg/ a visit.

>b...but it's just the drivers guys!

t. Microsoft shill

>he thinks it's about drivers

I used to have a thinkpad x201 until it died on Monday.

I can have a new laptop of my choice with my uni for "free" (it's counted among the budget given to each PhD candidate) but it has to be new (i.e. not from eBay or the like), and under 3000$.

I can have the funds in few months but I begin my research now, and this lenovo cucking Linux is scaring me.

I never worshipped Thinkpads, so I don't really give a shit.

For me ALPM doesn't work under windows. When I turn it on, Windows spins down my HDDs after every access and spins them back up fractions of a second later when it needs to access something else. Besides being incredibly noisy it's also seriously dangerous for their health. Took me too long to track it down to ALPM because no other OS I have installed freaks out about it.

>Remember those Dell laptops which would come with Ubuntu preinstalled a few years ago?
Who could forget?
youtube.com/watch?v=2dQiXHf0CEE

Does Microsoft feel threatened by Linux's new 2% market share or are they just brain damaged? Chromebooks and OS X are growing faster than linux but then again you can't install those on your chinkpad anyway.

Anyway, looks like I'm not getting a chinkpad after all, maybe it's time to check out the XPS

Lenono dumbass niggers. Why dont they allow the consumer absolute control of the sold product?

i use Linux because Linux lets me own my computer, using windows lets microsoft own your computer,

Possible but need some work with as ACPI is usually cucked.

the price of windows is embedded in to the price of your computer

Did you tried powertop?

>taking the word of some clueless poo in the loo online customer support representative seriously

You can't thread your own post you tard.

I have literally this problem on Linux. Fresh install. Anyone know how to fix it?

>believeing comments on Cred Forums over a lenovo representative

grasping@straws

When I installed Ubuntu on my laptop it actually had better trackpad support than Windows, and I didn't have to manually install the drivers.

Remove and reload the module with dependencies? Maybe.

>what is a kernel module

WE TOLD YOU THIS WOULD HAPPEN. THE FREEDOMS, THE CHOICES.

/Thread

There. Fuck you.

>Not using chromebooks and bios hacking
Have fun using outdated hardware cucks.

...

Suppose I'll give it a try later when I'm home. Thanks for the reply.

>some
Yeah, exactly 0,5% of all users.
Top kok.

I don't have to believe the comments on Cred Forums when I can look objectively at the facts. The problem is two-fold:

1. The laptop is configured to use a RAID mode that is unsupported by Linux and even Windows out of the box.

2. For whatever retarded reason, Lenovo has removed the BIOS toggle for the RAID mode. This is the ultimate issue here.

No Microsoft conspiracy this time, sorry.

In the Planet of the Apes should i be a monkey too, for to be convenient?

How can they stop you installing Linux?

Windows users are apes, because they aren't paranoid?
What else can you tell me? That Bush did 9/11? NWO is watching me?
Seriously visit a specialist. You're sick

They supposedly won't let you install any other OS than the factory one so you can't even reinstall Windows 10 on it.

It's just because the x220 has a tiny touchpad and I prefer working with a mouse when stationary for longer periods of time. For work on the go, the touchpad and clit mouse work fine. Actually I find the touchpad comfier on Linux.

It is the best set-up if you use a laptop. Beats turning your head sideways all the time. The two menu bars are just Unity standard. Maybe they can be disabled, but as they hold global menus, it makes sense to have them on both workspaces.

>my crappy os doesn't support this hardware
>mist be the hardware vendor's fault

The SJW mentality of open source has now come into full effect.

Keep making excuses for you hobyist OS. Maybe one day you'll justify running it to yourself.

Because i like it more and because i want.

If i understand correctly is any hardware bundled with "Windows 10 signature edition".

No doubt MS

Why is the pentium penguin behind bars? Does Gates know this?

>spent +$1000 on a laptop
>don't fully own it

That sucks. Recently got a Zenbook and wiped the Windows partition as soon as I booted. Running smooth, cool, and with great battery. RIP Lenovo, I'll make sure my x220 never dies.

This is the clever part, microsoft is always "subtle". Read this thread first:
forums.lenovo.com/t5/Linux-Discussion/Yoga-900-13ISK2-BIOS-update-for-setting-RAID-mode-for-missing/td-p/3339206

This is ridiculous, the device is so locked down that you cannot even reintall windows 10 again if by any means the system fails.

Also the statement that lenovo will not help you or even try to fix this mess comes directly from lenovo argumenting that is an "agreement with microsoft". see

see

>No Microsoft conspiracy this time, sorry.
Yeah, the same way secure boot is just a security measure, except the ones who hold the keys are a few companies where MS is included.

Also see

Then i /thread his post because he's full of truth:

I fully own my laptop. I can do whatever the fuck I want with it.
>living in the 3rd world country

what laptop do you have?

laptops arent weak shit anymore today, senpai

Thinkpad T21

Still expensive as shit if you want to play AAA shit outside of LoL/DOTA/CS:GO. Better of using that money on a desktop and making the laptop an emulation box.

>Windows users are apes, because they aren't paranoid?
Where did i write it? Ah in your mind, and i need a doc
>based (You)

The touchpad and clit-mouse pretty much worked out of the box with Arch on my T420.
But who would voluntary use a touchpad when you have a mouse available?

>That Bush did 9/11?
It was the Jews, retard. Bush was only a puppet.

And does that laptop has an artificial lock that prevents you from doing something in particular with it?

lenovo havent made a good computer since the X220
