Is it true that taking notes by hand is more effective than typing? What if I were to use a stylus instead of pen and paper. That sounds like the best of both worlds.

Nope, typing notes out is always better because you can write them out very fast and correct them without whiteout. Hell even taking notes on a touchscreen keyboard is faster than writing them (see pic related). By writing them you slow down to a crawling ~20 WPM and have to correct mistakes by either scribbling them out or having to paint them over with whiteout.

the pen is mightier than the keyboard because your writing speed is limited, you are forced to interpret so you can compact the ideas into fewer words. there are papers about it around the nets if you want to know more.

This d e s u

Actively engaging with the material so you can condense it to the core concepts will always be better for understanding and recall than blindly taking dictation

Or miss out on important parts of the subject especially if you are writing after a speaker.

>he can't shorthand

Writing helps you retain more information than typing, and using a stylus on a glass screen is the best way to write.

Personally for me writing is much more effective than typing. I can hardly remember shit after typing it down while I can toss my written notes after writing them since I remember that shit. And because my written notes never make any fucking sense once I read them afterwards. But if I don't write anything down I won't learn it nearly as effectively.

For me at least writing seems to act as a way to stay focused on the subject and process everything during the writing process even if the end product that ends up on the paper is garbage.

Quality > quantity m8

Taking notes with a keyboard is better if your class is fast. I miss important details when I am writing. Even for math, I use a keyboard to take notes and paper to draw diagrams.

This is BS. I've been typing out notes in college and have been getting good grades since forever.

>Quality > quantity m8
What the fuck does this even mean? LMFAO

>refuting scientific findings with anecdotal evidence

Depends on the situation you are in. Does the lecturer write on the board? Does the lecturer use slides? Is it some bullshit lecture with a lot of talking or is it math, physics etc?

Regardless, I always prefer handwriting. Reasons:
>Formulas, plots, illustrations
>The process of writing it all out forces you to compress the information, and compressing information means understanding it.
>Feedback, writing on a glass panel is a fucking joke, period.
>Typing in a lecture is annoying as hell

If that happens to you, then you weren't listening in the first place.

no one in this thread said that you can't get good grades by typing your notes

we just said your notes are worse than they could be

Can you give us a source, assburger?

>weren't listening in the first place

Then I'd have the whole thing monotonously transcribed so I can do my own business later.

>we just said your notes are worse than they could be
Not him but elaborate. I use latex btw.

>Not him but elaborate.
go reread the thread, multiple people have already answered in depth.

>I use latex btw.
using latex for note-taking is a stupid fucking idea in my mind, but whatever floats your boat. certainly typeset your notes after the fact with latex, that's a great idea, but writing notes in latex on the fly is just asking for trouble

>some bullshit lecture with a lot of talking
That's exactly how my Calc 2 classes went. I had to copy down what he said and look at my textbook to make my own notes. The notes he wrote on the board were entirely useless.

>Nope, typing notes out is always better
try typing diagrams

Its verified by studies that most people retain more when they write things down

Just use inkscape then.

Source: my ass.

i guess it depends on all that psychology bullshit
im a tactile learner so I learn more by handwriting notes and never looking at them again

scientificamerican.com/article/a-learning-secret-don-t-take-notes-with-a-laptop/

next time dont spoonfeed, let the lazy cunts find it by themselves because they are baiting you into doing the work for them.

Engineering professor here. Hand-writing your notes is the best practice if for no other reason than you must learn to condense information into a format that you will later be able to unpack and compile to long-term memory. This is a vital skill that is waning in the age of google searches and photos of white-boards.

Draw diagrams, short-hand a long explanation, make a note of page numbers or article headings, and be sure to cultivate handwriting quality that meets at least the standard that a peer can read it without too much trouble.

I had at one point recommended penabled tablets to students who found notes and file folders a burden for so many classes, but I have found over the course of several years that even this bit of short-cutting the process of writing, reviewing, and filing away notes to be detrimental to retention.

A lot is made of where students sit in a classroom or how much time they spend reviewing to gain competency, but the best predictors of outcome in my classes aside from raw IQ appears to be the aptitude of the student with respect to properly producing and curating a high quality hand-written set of notes for the course and keeping up with it.

Typing notes and adding pictures from a phone is always the hallmark of a student that will struggle. Whether this is because that behavior showcases a tendency towards laziness or it is because the act of typing itself reduces retention, I do not know, but I can attest to the better students having paper notes and a high quality file folder in their arsenal.

>Just use inkscape then.
That's way too slow. Everything you gain by typing you lose by using some drawing tool. Besides, you loose the feature of mixing text and drawings. When I take notes, they are full of arrows, underlines, circles, side notes, drawings, diagrams etc.
If your notes consist mainly, or exclusively of text, then you don't know how to take notes.

>Doing everything twice

Taking notes is valuable even if you don't use them afterwards. Taking them forces you to pay attention during lecture instead of doing fuck knows what.
Personally, the biggest benefit from taking notes in my case was not falling asleep during a lecture.

So writing your notes on a tablet pc is a good thing right?

Yes, though idiots might think you're dumb for writing on a glass surface "when you can just type them with your keyboard bro". I've done both and I found that I retained information far more effectively when I physically wrote it down. Sometimes you may have to type if the lecture is moving at a mile a minute though.

the real question is: can you focus with a tablet on your lap, constantly flirting with you to check that new notification, browsing, or the porn you have stored in there?

>That's way too slow. Everything you gain by typing you lose by using some drawing tool. Besides, you loose the feature of mixing text and drawings. When I take notes, they are full of arrows, underlines, circles, side notes, drawings, diagrams etc.
>If your notes consist mainly, or exclusively of text, then you don't know how to take notes.
Do you even know what inkscape is?

What about short handed typed notes and drawing diagrams on paper? Would that be similar enough?

I can't write and listen at the same time. Since I type far faster than I can write, I miss less things the professor says. Additionally, I can review what I typed several times before I need to type something else which I can't do with written notes.

>I miss less things the professor says.
why are you focusing on what the professor says? what he says is a tool to make you understand something.
understand, don't copy.

>I can't write and listen at the same time

You may have the autism son

writing: eyes and hands
listening: ears

Typing down notes is something I've only seen during the first year of college. People who did that, either didn't get past the first year or stopped doing it on the second year. OTOH, people writing notes could be spotted till the bitter end.
Just my anecdata.

>What about short handed typed notes and drawing diagrams on paper? Would that be similar enough?

I don't know how you'd manage that fluidly, but if it works for you sure. The main problem I see associated with, as I said, "short-cut," note taking habits is that they correlate with bad note-curating habits.

You really do need to take stock of your notes on a regular basis and hand-written note collation along with diagrams seems to do that the best since everything is on paper and can be filed away with other paper, usually additional notation you've made to clarify something, an example problem, etc.

Basically what you want to avoid are things that will get you in the habit of taking notes as a simple reflex exercise. That dumps everything into your short-term memory and it rots away before you make lasting marks in your long-term memory. Paradoxically, it might just be that the most involved note-taking process is the because just because it is involved. I am not a neurologist, so I won't be studying the phenomenon, but that is my best hunch to date.

>taking notes
>not just listening and remembering it all

It's like you fags are goldfish.

If only there were a program that could let you draw diagrams, doodles, and text on the same canvas...

I think you just don't know how to take notes. You are not supposed to constantly write while listening. You listen, process what has been said and write the essence of what has been said into a few words. It doesn't need to be complete sentences or even the best explanation. What you understood needs to be stored in your brain. The notes are just reminders.

I was born back in the analog age.
Back when computers where large and no one dreamed to use a 90s computer for writing notes.

We wrote everything on paper.
We where thought great writing skills.

Then I lived thru the change, cameras became digital and no longer you needed to send the materials to a store to get a picture made.

I remember the time when laptops started getting used.

I'm a Luddite so I'm skeptical of new things.
I was thinking to give it a try for using typing, was interested.

My conclusion?
Its crap every keyboard is disjointed you can hit other keys and you really don't remember what you are writing.
You concentrate more on fighting the keyboard then actually creating notes.
Also making drawings is a nightmare.

If you were thought good hand writing skills you know how to write good.

see Also not our fault you haven't learned to touch type and keep errors below 5% at 60+ WPM

>I can't write and listen at the same time

Dang the kids these days are fucked.
Seriously i can write without looking at the paper and its easier to concentrate on what is being spoken.

>Additionally, I can review what I typed several times before I need to type something else which I can't do with written notes.

I don't even understand this. So how long is this reviewing taking? 15 minutes? What are you even doing in class? The teacher is making 15 minute breaks? Or are you reviewing and not listening to him?

Can you write at 100 WPM?

>and a high quality file folder in their arsenal
What exactly do you mean by this? A physical folder with files or digital?

>have lecture
>turn on airplane mode
>???

I usually just memorise my lectures... i just type or write notes to make it look like i'm doing something other than just sitting there.

You know one time we did use laptops(teachers idea) to write everything and the diagrams where a nightmare on the level that i simply gave up and started using MS paint and was painting pictures(of the formulas) using the mouse.

You don't get more getto then using a mouse to draw in MS pain and copy past this shit into MS office.

So basically you are using hand writing only in a computer program so how is this different then using paper?
Any reason in getting this useless step outside
>Its digital MAAAAnnnn

PS: Are you paining the text? Or are you using the keyboard for the text and the graphics for everything else?

>keep errors below 5%
You do realize that handwriting has 000% errors?
You never make a error while writing.
I never get different characters if I'm handwriting, you get this on the keyboard.
And here you are bragging that you only get 4% errors.

Maybe because most people are retarded with tech?

>sorry prof, just stop for ten minutes while i recreate that diagram in inkscape.

>spelling errors aren't a thing

I don't measure WPM.
I did never have problems writing what people are saying and I did have professors who never shut up and talk like they are on speed.
And I can write down their every word.

Once more. What the living fuck are you doing in this review process? Give me a example how this looks.
i can only imagine a massive idiot re reading the 10 words he wrote while class is moving on and he gets confused.

HC@p0v0?

Can someone decode what this user wrote?

Is he telling that he has problems with spelling and needs a automated program to correct him?
Or what?

The youth of today is doomed.

>open 8.5x11 page template
>draw some boxes and circles
>pull necessary guides and clip said boxes and circles
>type shit in boxes and circles
>draw lines
>save as SVG
>do all this in less than 1 minute
wow

Yes, a physical file folder. Physically going over notes, elaborating, and filing them categorically is a very important part of retention into long-term memory.

OneNote is really nice for this.

>correlation = causation fallacy

for anything more than trivially simple, that will take way longer than 1 minute

Depends. Recently I've moved into typing my notes and can say I like it much better. This is because the way my mind works. When I write notes I have to split my attention between writing, listening, and understanding the concept(s). Because of my touch typing skills, I'm able to take notes effortlessly while concentration solely on listening and understanding.

DESU, I really don't take notes. I mostly just sit and listen. I have a great memory for recalling concepts. The important thing for me is to learn and understand the concept. From there, I can usually derive things on the fly regardless if I remember it or not.

I can see right through your facade, Pajeet. This is going to lead into a sellout for the Surface Pro and the Windblows 10 pen intergration, isn't it?

I used pic related to take notes through my entire degree program (applied mathematics). OneNote is god-tier. Never used a single sheet of paper except for quizzes and exams.

Meh I still prefer inkscape. You have way more control of what you do and can easily copy and paste all sorts of stuff.

Research shows typing is shit

>for anything more than trivially simple, that will take way longer than 1 minute
Well this won't. You're literally moving and clicking on a mouse 50% of the process so unless you have severe Parkinson's then you'll finish in under 1 minute.

this is now a typing test thread, post a pic of your WPM and name of your keyboard.

Coincidentally I just started a thread for this:

You're too late.
See

Do you place your palm on the display when you take notes?

>watching porn during lecture

i meant that it's possible to miswrite when you're writing, and acting as though handwriting doesn't have errors can be easily demonstrated to be false

i'm in favor of handwriting, by the way

this guy knows it

Truth.

Tried digital and physical.

Actually putting down pen on paper then arranging your files is your own personal external hard-disk.

Conceptual groupings and diagrams are far more effective than a wall of text for anyone with half a brain.

Inkscape is cheap meme software trash that exclusively idiots use.

Use a fucking pencil and paper you moron.

>what is inkscape

You've obviously never used inkscape or are too brain damaged to understand it.

KEK
>comparing analog to digital
>not the other way around
ISHYGDDT

>mfw I have a similar folder with handwritten cheat sheets for various cli programs
>use them very sporadically, because writing them down made me memorize 95% of what's written on them

>not sketching your notes

only a person that has never drawn anything on a laptop could believe it's as good as hand drawing

No they're just bored on a thursday and want to trigger anons by posting bait so they're a little less bored

You'd be very surprised how 1337 drawings can look on inkscape. Don't take my word for it you can try and keep inkscape for free (literally).

inkscape.org/en/download/

It even supports homOS X and foot fungus OS if you're into that.

Yeah right. Maybe if your sketch is a fucking box with a word in it. Most sketches (i.e. plots) are way more complicated than that. Then there's a formula or two in it and you are fucked.

Nah, I'd rather use a method that is more robust than that.

This. My cs profs draw shit like this all the time. And typing math notes is fucking garbage

>What if I were to use a stylus instead of pen and paper.
It's actually the worst of both worlds.

>people actually take notes in a way that isn't just writing down everything the instructor says as well as copying everything he writes
What the fuck?

You can draw anything in inkscape if you read the fucking manual for 5 minutes once. Latex is also supported in inkscape.

You really have no excuses mang, computers are simply better at taking notes.

wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/LaTeX

That's what typing words on a keyboard and drawing shit in inkscape is though...

>taking organic chemistry notes on a computer
Lel

medstudent here, last semester I take all my notes in onenote , while also doing resumes also in notebook, while also recording the audio of the class, also using the same notes in my onenote to make anki deck cards.

I came top of the class.

But on the other hand, I was the only autistic fuck who take his laptop in all places to make his notes.

p.s. I am mexican but I only study in the original english books so there is a little spanglish here and there, sorry about that

See

retarded

>drawing with a mouse
>drawing with a touchpad
No thanks.

This user gets it. The issue is not software, but the sole fact of drawing with a mouse/touchpad.
Sure, there are some e.g. artists that can pull that off, but for the rest of us, mortals, the idea of doing that is revolting.

okay i'm not gonna lie

yes it's infinitely better than online notes. i started out college with a fancy macbook and eventually ditched that shit and bought myself good old fashioned notebooks.

You can't possibly believe this shit.

Inkscape draws vectorised drawings you dumb fucks. All you have to do is click and drag shapes or click and connect lines together and then adjust them later.

You can also "draw" like how you imagine but it's optional and rarely used in inkscape.

...

You know what fuck off you luddite, what are you even doing on Cred Forums or the internet for that matter? Aren't there some factory machines you should be beating with a sledgehammer right now?

...

you can't be serious to expect someone is going to click his way through those Bezier curves just to draw some dickbutts during a lecture

would be nice of you to read a little about luddites before using words you don't understand

XD ebin post friend, upvoted

It would literally take less than 1 minute and he could copy and paste the original one and modify it as much as he wants.

>It would literally take less than 1 minute
drawing dickbutts takes me 5 seconds
>and he could copy and paste the original one and modify it as much as he wants.
which is a feature you rarely need

I personally just like to write notes in a shitty 1 subject notebook. After class, or when there's times where nothing important is being said I go back and trace over important stuff to bold it and bring it to attention, or draw a box or something around it. It helps that I read over the notes again when I do that, so it helps with retention

Honestly I don't know how people can type their notes, it just doesn't work for me. I also tend to skim dense text on a screen, so textbooks and e-books don't work for me. I like my shit if physical form.

I'd like to get a surface and try using that for note taking though. Then instead of tracing over the important stuff I can color it or whatever. If it doesn't work for notes at least I have a lighter laptop.

I believe you are lying to defend your position. Ridiculous behaviour honestly.

No matter what font size or line spacing I use Onenote fucks up the alignment when I'm typing. How did you get yours so clean?

So Onenote is actually pretty good? I figured it was one of the trash programs Microsoft tried to force into Office, but I'm willing to try it out if you can use touchscreen to also draw stuff.

It's literally the most useful thing ever shat out, so good that it has 0 viable competitors

Are surface tablets worth the investment? I've heard mixed things on the battery life, and that the battery is a pain in the ass to replace.

Thought about picking up one from eBay or buying one from Amazon since reading my textbook off my x220T is kind of suffering.

Only other alternative I can think of is an iPad, but fuck me those are expensive.

Wow. I got the full Office 365 from school and it installed Onedrive against my will along with a bunch of other junk. When I get home I'm gonna pop that fucker open and try it out.

why bother?
just record video of the lecture.

? Just mantain consisten font size? if you add imagges just resize them so they also fit the alignment, I also use tabs a lot.

And then you watch the whole thing again and again when you learn for an exam? The whole point of taking notes is to remove redundant information and extract the essence.

t. dropout

Sorry, I missplace my reply.
See this

Tвoe лицo, кoгдa пидopaшкa зaлeзлa 4чaн кyльтивиpoвaть зaлyпy.

Literally the only good thing microshit has ever produced

Just buy a used 2015 Thinkpad Yoga if you want a 2 in 1. Essentially the same specs as a Surface Book but at a cheaper price than a Surface Pro 4. Much better thermals, build, and keyboard too. Just make sure you get one with the pro pen.

Microsoft killed the Onenote you once knew. The Onenote dev on Cred Forums confirmed it was going to happen years ago.

Just try multiple ways to take notes and see what you think?

Personally I find taking notes by hand the most flexible method & the one that gives me the best retention.

On the other hand you can make gorgeously formatted notes w/ LaTeX or Maple documents or w/e.

>Is it some bullshit lecture with a lot of talking or is it math, physics etc
This is not at all mutually exclusive (unfortunately)
