Windows 10 Might Soon Track Absolutely Everything You Do 'for Your Own Good'

news.softpedia.com/news/windows-10-might-soon-track-absolutely-everything-you-do-for-your-own-good-508602.shtml

>Microsoft has often been accused of spying on its users with Windows 10 because the operating system collects some data needed to diagnose bugs and help improve reliability, but if this recently-patented technology ever reaches mass-production, the firm should really be ready for a never-seen-before amount of criticism.

>Called “Query formulation via task continuum,” the patent basically describes a technology that always monitors what users do on their computers, including here the time when they’re working with third-party apps.

>As MSPU notes, the whole thing is happening for users’ own good, as what Microsoft is trying to do here is to connect third-party apps with its own services in order to provide better search experience.

>Here’s how it works. Basically, Microsoft claims that by keeping an eye on whatever users are doing on their computers, such as writing a document, the search engine can always be prepared for delivering better search results. For instance, if you’re writing a paper on dancing, Bing knows what you’re interested in and can then provide results that are relevant to your work.

you are a fucking tool

When will Nadella be executed?

pubesOS doesn't have this problem

What if I DON'T want Bing to know what I'm writing in a document? Maybe I'm writing a private letter meant only for someone I trust and the topic matter is very sensitive?

Thanks Microsoft, no one really was interested in me that much in my entire miserable life

Shiggy. I'll see y'all in the mountains.

>For instance, if you’re writing a paper on dancing, Bing knows what you’re interested in and can then provide results that are relevant to your work.
This is such a pathetic excuse. If I wanted to search something related to my work on Bing I would type the keywords and perform the search on Bing myself.
I don't need some automation to do that for me. This is a really pathetic reason to use.

>the effort matters even if you get the same result

Has there ever been a better time to switch to Linux?

no, you are fucking dumb because you read some fucking story and then googled a program to 'fix' it. if you actually put some thought into that shit, your dumb tin foil hat nonsense would make you realize that since they control the kernel, any of the traffic they wanted to hide could simply be done so that not even wireshark or any local firewall rules would show.

if you arent setting the dns entries statically you truly dont care about 'spying', you are just trying to fit in

t. Kaczynski

How about you just add it as a fucking option?

I am aware that there is little you can do to stop the Operating System from knowing everything you are doing, but when it involves sending data off my system give me a fucking option.

As it stands I am currently just glad I live in a country where Cortana doesn't work.

>i said kernel so people would think i'm smart

They did in their Terms of Service.

You accepted by installing Windows 10. :^)

>I run Gentoo because Cred Forums told me to!

>i am responding with pure nonsense, so people know that i'm fucking retarded

It's so good you HAVE to have it.

I'm almost amazed they consider this a good idea after Apple implemented that automatic Bing image search thing.

What could possibly go wrong?

Do we have any real choices for desktop OSes anymore?
BeOS went up in a puff of smoke.
Amiga is kept under proprietary lock.
Plan9 never went anywhere.
It's either linux or windows today.

Then just don't upgrade to Windows 10, which will inevitably download this feature in the distant future, since Windows is now a service that's constantly updated instead of a product that's replaced by a new version every few years.

>It's either linux or windows today.

Something's missing...

something something rolling release

I already removed all my data from my W7 PC except games. I just turned it into a console and connected it to my PC.
And my personal and work documents are on my encrypted Ubuntu laptop.

i bet you did this because you think microsoft sends those documents back to them and the nsa

*connected it to my TV

Just like Chrome and Manjaro? That's not bad in essence.

I have no idea what Microsoft does. That's the entire point.

>No OSX

Well, I use Debian Linux. As a fan of Debian, I have to say, since you want more options than just Linux, may I suggest Debian BSD, or dare I say, Debian Hurd?

Choices.

I use Debian and Iceweasel. Why would I use Manjaro and Chrome?

Because Debian and Iceweasel are behind the times.

>using the smiley with a carat nose

>Having no respect for the first emoticon :^)

Go support reactOS

I for one think it's a useful feature. If you are working on classified documents the computer shouldnt really be connected to the open internet. Alternatively use Linux. For 90% of the normie shit improving user experience is a legitimate reason to collect data. I for one trust Microsoft with my data.

>Being this brainwashed to think keystroke logging is going to improve the user experience
Holy hell do we live in sad times.

Why is the most entrenched OS that I absolutely have to fucking use for mission critical applications the most cancerous. I can't switch to Linux and I can't switch to OSX I don't have the time to fiddle with KVM and I don't have what I need on OSX, fuck this world.

That's actually pretty smart and extremely convenient, it would basically improve by orders of magnitude your usual, antiquated workflow, imagine how easy it would be to teach normies how to program on this thing.

Don't mind the low IQ, schizophrenic bottom of the barrel autistic virgins on Cred Forums, they are completely detached from reality.

If it were up to Cred Forumstards we would have to use the internet through slow ass pedo software like tor and without JavaScript or any dynamic content at all.

Sad!

test.

...Just dual-boot. Are you so lazy that you cannot reboot when you need to switch to "mission critical" (hue hue) applications? It takes like two minutes. Unless you are running a potato, you have enough memory to keep another OS on your machine.

refer to

>51 posts

I hope is paying you all overtime for the extrawork.

"mission critical" has become a cancerous buzzword used by slouchy businessmen trying to sell crap and people trying to make their jobs sound more important than they are

it sounds even worse than "in the cloud"

it's ok to call your "mission critical application" a "website" or "program" because that's all it fucking is and everyone knows it and no one is being fooled here CHUMP

How has any brainwashing taken place, considering they're giving out real world, useful examples of how this technology will be implemented?

Kill yourself paranoid autist

Yes absolutely, if I have to reboot just to use some ancient fucking compiler or to be able to use a version of Skype that's more stable that the fucking mess that's on Linux to talk to some normie employer who uses that shit, a minute rebooting can either be really fucking annoying having to do it over and over again or actually loose my fucking job if some windows update or Linux update fucks grub and all of a sudden my machine won't work.

>Not writing your own .reg and .bat files so you know exactly what's being done

>Hurd

>He doesn't have to use ancient compilers and debug old software designed to only run on Windows and can afford time to fix a system failure or work around an operating system shortcoming or missing feature every other day.

fucking Microsoft is forcing me to upgrade my completely fine hardware for one that supports vt-d

running their OS inside offline VM seems like the only sane choice these days

there's absolutely no difference between a windows user and a husband who watches his wife have sex with her boyfriend

You are not being forced to do anything. Just do not "upgrade" to their shit.

use a firewall with ssl striping / L7 control

they are backporting spy features to older versions too

yeah and what your will discover is just another encrypted data

>What if I DON'T want Bing to know what I'm writing in a document? Maybe I'm writing a private letter meant only for someone I trust and the topic matter is very sensitive?
Go linux or go full pen and paper. Calligraphy is a dying art.

I didn't know there was a style web app, but like I said I don't have time to fiddle with KVM, I don't know if I can justify a VMware license right now, and last time I tried to use virtual box on my laptop it completely broke on me when I actually needed it to work for once.

*Skype

VMware workstation is free, the fuck are you talking about requiring a license

This makes me sad, I'm too normie for Linux but I don't want to be spied on or support this shit. I know literally nothing about Linux and I hear you can't even install it, you have to compile it yourself or some crazy shit.

You guys will probably say that only the people smart enough to figure it out on their own deserve to not get fucked over, and I can't change your mind on that, but I'm sad.

On trial it is.

Convince me not to run hackintosh after this

I'd run linux on more than a spare laptop but I want to play video games, jesus fuck

Just look up a video on JewTube to show you. There are plenty.

Isn't Apple spying on everyone too?

you can just download and install linux , but let's be honest here. judging by you're comment it would probably be too hard for you

Ubuntu is pretty normie friendly, that's the reason/ g/ hates it

Shhhhhh let the Macfags think they are safe. It is just easier that way.

I never hear about it, I'm assuming macfags are too retarded to care

>What distributions are supported by Steam?
>Currently, Steam for Linux is only supported on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS or 12.10 with the Unity, Gnome, or KDE desktop.

ok I know what I'll be doing ty

Why are Linux users so obsessed with talking about Windows?

They are mostly NEET edgelords that need to find meaning in their useless lives. Since they cannot do anything of value, they can only shit talk on the Internet about Windows users.

>Yes, the irony is noted.

Windows users are easily triggered and baited, especially the gaymer variety

>wincucks will still use it and defend it

b...but it´s not implemented it´s just a patent
microsoft would never do such a thing
you can turn it off i´m sure

Sadly, there really are "mission critical" programs that require Windows, and by mission critical, I mean programs that just plain don't work on Linux, and the alternatives are unacceptable for various reasons.

You would definitely be able to turn it off, or the year of Linux would really come to pass (you just won't be able to turn it off on the home version).

>softpedia
g as retarded as as ever yellow press lovers

>turns it off
>couple days go by
>forced update
>it´s back on
not like you should trust Microsoft that the switch is going to turn it off

My point is they won't do that on the education or enterprise versions.

None of the killed folders contain anything needed for windows.
Will they be enough to block "spying"?

isn't cortana retardely bound to the windows search function? Like you won't even find files on the desktop if you use the windows search.

Use a better performing third party search program that doesn't touch the internet or organize your files logically.

This is the reason why you're using your own OS that you coded from scratch right?

>behind the times
Not an argument.

>you have to compile it yourself
That's where you're wrong, there are many normie-friendly distros available such as Ubuntu, Fedora, etc.

t. NSA
>t. NSA
t. NSA
>t. NSA
t. NSA
>t. NSA
t. NSA
>t. NSA

You're missing the point.

How is that implausible?

How can anyone be surprised by this? Monitoring absolutely everything is the only way to prevent all the "problems" the average windows using retard might run into.

You basically have to decide between two options:
1. "Windows just werks lol, get a life u basement dwelling nerd" with no privacy at all.
2. Get a grasp of how the machine you're using works, do shit manually, fix problems when they occur, have at least some privacy.

Windows 10 is shit. Because people who hack or connect to someone else's network spreads it everywhere creating ads and make money off of your ip it has nothing to do with not getting spied on. They really don't fucking care how angry or shit you're really are. They just want money off of you. Every ad company does this cause "business" not because of the spying. Windows 10 EULA banning torrents/piracy was a big mistake cause people who buy software that cause more they might want it back.

Not him, I do believe M$ rapes your privacy but wouldn't it be obvious via bandwidth usage or so if they kept a copy of your files?

>he wants me to suggest a distro that the normie couldn't of wrapped his head around
He can also try Manjaro, from what I've heard it's pretty user-friendly (I might be wrong, though)

Linux is no better, all modern distros ship with systemd and wayland which track your activity too

yeah, systemd and wayland both send data to the NSA, so be careful!!!

Windows 10 detects when you are not doing anything (idle) and only uploads your files (and their secret scans which send all hashes of your personal files) to their servers at that time, it also hides the network log/info from task manager, logs, etc so you cannot see the data usage.

Got source/proof? Is it the same with W7 now too?

I'm sure you have packet data from your hardware firewall to corroborate your claims there user.

It is in the updated privacy statement:

>Finally, we will access, transfer, disclose, and preserve personal data, including your content (such as the content of your emails in Outlook.com, or files in private folders on OneDrive), when we have a good faith belief that doing so is necessary to:
>comply with applicable law or respond to valid legal process, including from law enforcement or other government agencies;
>protect our customers, for example to prevent spam or attempts to defraud users of our products, or to help prevent the loss of life or serious injury of anyone;
>operate and maintain the security of our products, including to prevent or stop an attack on our computer systems or networks; or
>protect the rights or property of Microsoft, including enforcing the terms governing the use of the services - however, if we receive information indicating that someone is using our services to traffic in stolen intellectual or physical property of Microsoft, we will not inspect a customer's private content ourselves, but we may refer the matter to law enforcement.

As soon as they feel like it they go right in the back door and take WHATEVER they want to, they have also been caught taking screenshots without consent as well as default "feedback" to send screenshots and full dumps of your machine at crash time giving them full access to hat you were doing. Maybe you were watching porn, writing a private letter, banking. They have it. Pajeet has it.

>it's another shitty anti MS clickbait FUD article

I wonder how many of you have android phones?

Is this really the only way Microsoft can make money these days? Selling people's info to NSA and other spy agencies? What happened to Microsoft being buttblasted about being forced to give NSA backdoors and shit?

They already do this, the difference is now they can also collect info from non-MS programs. Which doesn't actually change much since even now they collect more than enough data from users.

Windows 10 being buggy and rushed trough "milestones" like an untested linux distro that never has enough time to iron out the bugs is just the pragmatic side, but I am disgusted by Microsoft on a moral level.
Linux requires some sacrifices, but at least you know what it's doing.

Like seriously, did anyone on Cred Forums NOT see this coming?

Bandwidth usage or packet inspection maybe, but who really knows? Windows-sama is a black box

fuck that, what if I am doing research work on ebscohost or something? Is bing going to have that exact article on rising energy consumption on risc base processors, written by some professor at the University of Indiana last week?

This was filed in March 2015, and it also seems to mention only the "browser", which would be Edge I assume? I didn't read the whole thing but I think the Softpedia article is just clickbait bullshit

But that doesn't say that they upload data from your computer while you are idle and hide said uploads from monitoring software.

Also, can you link me to that privacy statement?

my point is they will do it but not openly
you are too trusting
after all what would happen if it came out that it´s even on the enterprise versions?
as if companies would change their OSs to linux
nothing would maybe some cheap lawsuit from the EU and a fine but that´s nothing that microsoft would care about

but anons

it IS for your own good

isn't it?

Surely you have a feeling by now for how valuable data is. ALL data.

No, no one cares about how many times you fap per day

What we care about is YOU. All of you - on a collective level, properly organized and analyzed, can't you imagine?

Problems arise when this wealth is 1.) Hoarded 2.) Used individually predatorily. Both will be attempted, of course, so safeguards always need to exist

But it is inevitable that all intelligent life will approach an ever increasing apex of data production and thus analyzation

The perfect state of existence is a maximized data output and input

I mean, if we already had a perfect index of all disease related deaths, can't you see we'd already have cured them all by now? But we don't. So stop whining, keep your secrets in your consciousness (who knows if that'll stay safe forever ;)), and get comfy, cause data analysis is here to stay, just like math.

For the hyper paranoid mega resistant - go ahead and develop your own binary, kernel, os to attempt to maintain contact with the civilized world as the rest of us attempt to progress together. Good luck!

>But that doesn't say that they upload data from your computer while you are idle and hide said uploads from monitoring software.
They have been caught by wireshark on video doing it on a fresh install. Look up what the default "Full Feedback£ sends, they don't even lie about it:
>Full includes everything in Basic and Enhanced levels, plus additional diagnostic data including the memory state of your device when a system or app crash occurs (which may unintentionally include parts of a document you were using when a problem occurred). It also turns on advanced diagnostic features that can collect additional data from your device, which helps us further troubleshoot and fix problems. When we learn that devices are experiencing problems that we have trouble diagnosing or replicating internally, we will randomly select a small number of devices from those at the Full level that are experiencing those problems from which to gather the data needed to diagnose and fix the problem (including user content that may have triggered the issue). If an error report contains personal data, we won't use that information to identify, contact, or target advertising to you. Full is the recommended option for the best Windows experience and the most effective troubleshooting.

These things don't go together.

Basically you don't know what you're talking about and you're throwing conspiracy theories.

line, though that is pretty much stock for ANY online service privacy statement.

Let me put it out there, I am not particularly happy with the data Microsoft wants to take, particularly that they give little to no options to opt out of most of it, but there is a difference between having concerns with their data collection and making up shit about the way they are collecting data in order to scare people.

>Would it be possible to flood their data harvesting with tons of useless and/or offensive data?
That's like 90% of the data they're getting anyway.

Being behind the times isn't a bad place to be in if your future is literal 1984.

This is actually what we need to do, whether to stop data collection or to promote linux

This can't be real...

I am drunk enough to not have realized they were hiding content of the privacy statement behind Learn More Javascript events.

A lot of this stuff can read fairly innocuously though because it is common sense. When you make a Microsoft account of course they are going to collect your password, your name, any information you give, because they need to save that with your account. When you use their email services of course they will collect all the emails and attachments you sent and receive, because as an email service they need to in order to provide the email service to you. Of course they are going to collect all your Bing searches etc
The main issue I have is that it doesn't really address, specifically with the Windows areas, what they collect when you have a local account instead of using a Microsoft account and how it differs.

It doesnt differ whether you have an accoint or not.

Lol

No. I might be drunk enough to though.

Honestly, user, anti-beacons cripple Windows 10 because the OS needs Cortana, OneDrive, loggers, and telemetry in order to run properly. They're part of the design itself.

Guys, just give up, just embrace the botnet like I have, it's the future. Don't you see, botnet is the next step of human evolution where our conscience are uploaded into the botnet where we can finally understand each other, truly. There will be no more loneliness for we know everything about each other, we will leave our physical shells, and merge into one entity, the botnet.
Embrace it, the time of ascension draws near.

Going forward, it's very simple.

If you have a "consumer" mindset, you use Windows for a highly controlled, locked down environment designed to be accessible to the lowest common denominator.
If you have a "user" mindset, you use Linux for control over your own system and the traditional PC open-platform environment that Windows is moving away from.

After 2020, you will never have an OS that doesn't want to spy on you and can actually run the software you want.

google has been generating search pages in 0.001 seconds for the past 15 years. why the fuck does microsoft have to datamine my entire computer to do the same (for a search function i literally never use)

By using the software what does it disable? I am on the Anniversary update, should I get it?

You can pick and choose what to disable and it gives you information on what and why you might want or not want to disable each option. They've done a fantastic job with it.

Yeah.

>connecting your VMs to the internets
shiggy

Dear neckbeards.

Please make hypervisor gaming in VM's easy for idiots. I want to leave Wangblows behind but 50% of my PC usage is gaymen and Wine is too buggy to ever work to satisfactory degree.

Regards
Noob

Wine works out of the box about 90% of the time nowadays. It also tends to provide a much less buggy experience than playing games natively, funnily enough, with notoriously buggy/crashy games running without a single hiccup (but perhaps reduced FPS) on wine.

VGA passthrough is trivial. Go in bios to activate IOMMU, add a line to the boot options by editing a file, then just run the VM. Done.

The absolute madmen! theyll do it I know they will.

If you don't launch your games that frequently and have an SSD, you could get away with rebooting to switch OSes every time you play vidya. It's kind of a hassle but not too bad if you play in moderation

Unfortunately the software running under Wine have no access to native Linux APIs.

Why would anyone care?

I tried Linux and KVM as an experiment for fun. It's easy if you don't need PCI passthrough for the extra performance, and I do which made it pretty complicated and irritating to get working right, and then it broke and I said fuck it and gave up.

can microsoft still spy on me if I use windows 10 only for gaming etc and run a vm on it with linux for the daily shit

It's not necessarily paranoia. Even if no human at MS reads what you've been doing, this can still burn you, even if you haven't done anything illegal on the computer.
