Should the BSDs be retired?

Is it time to retire BSD in all its forms? I mean, it's becoming a joke like Minix at this point. Google is coming out with a new OS called Fuchsia and Andromeda, so BSD is completely fucked.

I think it's time for BSD to become history.

I think it's time for OP to stop being a faggot.

Sadly we don't always get what we want.

>I think it's time for OP to stop being a faggot.
this.

however:
i was once a bsd hobbyist.
during the past few years i have not really had the time for hobbyist computing.
lately i've found myself with a bit more free time and i want to put a server together and host my own website form home.
my impression is that bsd is not as popular as it was a few years ago.
can anyone comment on this?

It's not as popular as it was a few years ago.

BSDs haven't really been popular in a long time, not since GNU/Linux took off. They've mostly fallen back to servers and workstations.

that was actually intended for

Yes, that is what I said, in different words.

linux never seemed that fun to me.

is Greg Lehey's book (the Complete FreeBSD) still relevant?
so far i've installed freebsd 10 on vmware and i noticed there's a 'new' installer
right now i'm just fucking around with it to see what i remember

Yahoo used to sponsor FreeBSD development many years ago but now they just use Linux and Windows server. However, BSD is still used to some extent by Apple and Sony.

>BSD is still used to some extent by Apple and Sony.

Darwin is BSD

Playstation is BSD

OS X, iOS, Playstation/Vita OS

No it is not. Those are proprietary forks.

Why are you so butthurt that you can't even go to BSD's wikipedia page

this that's why the duck wears the horns & holds the pitchfork

Do you know what a fork is...?

even Microsoft is down with the daemon these days - theregister.co.uk/2016/06/09/microsoft_freebsd/

You can probably still use a lot of it but there's likely going to be stuff it misses because it was published like 13 years ago.

There's Absolute FreeBSD which is somewhat newer.

If it has closed source elements it's not helping keep BSD alive, figgot.

>because it was published like 13 years ago.
hah, yes that did cross my mind as i was thumbing through it recently
i also have a copy of this >Absolute FreeBSD
i have to admit that i have a fondness for Lehey's book - i found it easy to understand when i knew nothing at all about 'unix'

Nobody said anything about proprietorship or forking. Just admit you done goofed.

>Google is coming out with a new OS called Fuchsia and Andromeda, so BSD is completely fucked.

If anyone is getting fucked because of Google it will be Linux.

>duck
Hexley the Platypus

BSD is dying you nigger. Just admit it. I was aware of its limited, and shrinking, use cases.

But I like PFsense

>BSD is dying you nigger.
What does this have to do with your original dumbass response?

In order to develop on top of something, the bottom needs to be stable.

What if they dual license it?

Darwin isn't the same as what Apple uses for Mac OS anymore and PS4 OS is closed source. Niggers tongue my anus.

So? Apple has enough money to do their own thing now.

Posting from a FreeBSD laptop. It really just werks. Enjoy your systemd cancer.

Lennart disapproves of your dissenting opinions you shitlord.

Darwin is the kernel for OS X ...
user, if you really want to beat a dead horse try Solaris or Amiga

Why would they retire it? There are still people willing to work on the project. And BSD projects are not for profit, so they continue as long as there are people interested in them.

You as a user may retire it from your own assets but I don't see the point of retiring it from developer's perspective.

Darwin is the entire "base system" of OSX. OSX is Darwin + proprietary components, mostly the graphical interface/widget toolkit stuff. The kernel of OSX and Darwin is XNU

both sony and apple DO give back to the bsd's, you know that right

would be too hard to merge back changes otherwise

>workstations.

That's solaris. BSD wasn't used on workstation, but you can link one case.

It's dead.

>>> os.name()
Darwin
>>> platform.system()
OS X
>>> platform.realease()
10.x

From the low level it's seen as darwin

all Solaris does is run oracle listeners now it's anything but a workstation

And Mach and this argument is totally unrelated apple forked it (very) long ago.

Netflix and whatsapp runs BSD. Everything else is bullshit or BSD is a gaming platform? Even openttd is dumbed down on OpenBSD.

Your shitposting is most likely running through a BSD box

Sunrays at fag department will suddenly became servers or what?

Are you sure you're not confusing Solaris with OEL

Totally.

>Google is coming out with a new OS called Fuchsia and Andromeda, so BSD is completely fucked.

What? What does Google have at all to do with BSDs or their usage?

>Those are proprietary forks
...of BSD.

>Google is coming out with a new OS
Will you be installing this new clever spyware yourself?

>The kernel of OSX and Darwin is XNU
No it's based on XNU.

bsd needs to exist for sperg nomenclature containment
