Never really liked SE - Macintosh Plus is where it's at.
Even so, Macintosh XL is by far the most beautiful imo

also they need to bring back document displays

I like the simple design, far nicer than the latter ones.

Is... is that an SSD hooked up to a PCI SATA card? What's that thing running, a 486?

>Every time you see a single portrait display you think of the Alto

>What's that thing running, a 486?
That's an XT...

IBM PC Server 325 pentium pro 180 from 1996, still running 24/7

In a company? What's it doing? Fucking beauty

What's the power usage like?

Don't you just love it when old machines still have a daily use?

On the CRT? Dunno, aesthetic contrast?

Is that the result of Shrek raping an hobbit?

Running some custom made software for wood processing industry warehouse management. I did install win2k3 when upgrading main drive since it was running out of space.

I actually metered the thing since I was also curios and it's very good for a server - 75W@idle with 4xscsi drives, dds, dual nic etc.

It's very slow tho, like half the speed of raspberry pi :-) will post some benchmarks that I did.

>75W@idle
That's amazing actually.

>will post some benchmarks that I did.
Interested!

>bliss.jpg

>tfw WinXP is already 15 years old

Chrome was bitch to get running and benchmark crashes before finishing.

Original 2.1Gb scsi drives.

Oh, I remember those ones.

Other one is 15MB/s

What are the actual specs?

That's the one.

Tried running speccy but it crashes.

Single pentium pro 180 (mbo is dual capable), 640mb edo ecc ram, adaptec 7880, 3x2.1gb, 1x9gb hdd, dds2 tape. It was pretty much base low end model.

>Tried running speccy but it crashes.
You can try Everest sometimes if you want full hardware profile, AIDA64 probably does not have information for such old hardware.

That's a pretty great machine for it's time, what expansions does it have, ISA with PCI and E-ISA?

Still works

Is that a caddyload?

Slots are interesting, every slot has two sockets side by side so you can use both PCI and EISA cards.

You mean daddyload

no, motherload

It's single bay 6 slot CD changer.

Awesome

This one was for sale locally for cheap, also a dual CPU Pentium Pro, but only with E-ISA, didn't really spark interest in me, would have loved PCI.

>3x2.1GB and a DDS tape
Nah, that's not really bad at all. The single-socket 150MHz boxes with IDE disks were the destitute ones, but even those are worth treasuring, Pros are rare as shit nowadays, especially a server system like that one.

I actually kind of wish I could get my hands on a low-end consumer PPro 150/180 though, I only have 200 MHz examples.

thinking of swapping DOS out for it on my 486-66 since I don't really care much for old games

Nice light mod on that MDD.

Oh shit!

Any good shmups?

A small sample of my collection, can't dig the rest out right now.

Where do you guys get this shit?

eBay, garage sales, junk sales, etc.

Found these at work today

I want one of these, but designed for modern hardware.

Do you have any of the gifs on those CDs?

i run 4 pentium 4 pcs in my room with no AC

The only thing actually producing any noticeable heat are the PowerMac and my desktop, all the other computer don't really produce any significant heat, not even the CRTs, maybe the temporary TV on the C64 at most.

Major feels. I need to setup my SGI again, but I worry about how much longer that old spinny drive will last, and I don't think I have a full set of media for it anymore.

There are places that sell SCSISD adapters. I just need to bite the bullet, buy one, and dd my drive over.

Anyone here have experience with them?

except for the keyboard

>but I worry about how much longer that old spinny drive will last
>buy SCSI2SD
>copy old drive to SD drive
>run off flash for much faster feelz
I bought two, they work great.

This, it's true, when screwing with that machine for extended periods I always use an external USB board.

It's not fast but it will run Dwarf Fortress in Wine at a somewhat elderly speed but it's still playable and that's all I ask.

>you will never have a desktop computer that is its own desk

This isn't a new thing user.

In the 1950's hams were dreaming of this:

Which one did you get? Did you have to make a new-fake geometry in the OS to make it happy?

I didn't know there were new ones, I have the original.

No I didn't need to do anything at all, seems to work perfectly.

I am going to get a few more, they are great and cheap. A good used old SCSI drive can be almost as much.

>using a computer will never be like captaining a spaceship
>browsing the internet doesn't require a highly trained and specialized crew

I bought one of these for laughs.
What's wrong with it?

Marathon 1-3 are nice on the vertical screen actually.

Comfy fucking game too, from Bungee before they were bought and turned out by MS.

...

>What's wrong with it?
It requires Windows-only drivers user, IIRC.

Essentially this is true but all those knobs and dials are software-controlled.

>Dwarf Fortress
>Wine

It works just fine user.

Why wouldn't it?

I did it because reasons.

>Are you high?
and yes, I am

Sure it works...
You do know that there is a linux binary, right?
That's what I thought.

>You do know that there is a linux binary, right?
Yes but because of certain reasons I run it in WINE.

It's not like there is an appreciable overhead.

Oh, running therapist or one of the other latch ons, I guess that makes sense.

Bingo.

Any of you anons have a 12" G4 Powerbook? That's next on my wish list, no Intel botnet, onboard gig-e, etc.

youtube.com/watch?v=7WaYYNUCWMY

REICHNET?

Picked up one of these today. It has a 80x14 line monochrome lcd and 3.5" floppy drive. Document writing and spreadsheet software in rom. Might be able to load programs from disk? I want to determine the cpu. Most likely candidate is a motorola sc38lg018pi01 which I've been unable to find online. Only clue so far is that in some of freescale's numbering schemes, an SC prefix means custom chip (yay...).

Do you use the 200LX for anything?
Now that I've figured out how to work the appointment book on this thing I'm developing a real fetish for HP palmtops, shooting for a 200LX or 300LX next.

I use it to store all my passwords, also I have a terminal program and a c compiler on there.

I'd get an Omnibook, it's pretty rad. Basically a scaled-up 200LX.

you play DF on this thing?

like what, 1x1 maps with twenty dwarves?

Are you me? I was thinking of doing pretty much the same stuff. Don't have the serial cable though, unfortunately, these things sound like they'd make really nice handheld terminals for router/server administration or whatever else.

I managed to get my hands on one of those, really hard to find something to laplink with it for some reason, only ever managed to get it working with a shitty 486 Thinkpad.

I bought an original 340 MB Microdrive for shits and giggles a while back, I think these things need a BIOS upgrade to work with CF adapters though.

There is one for $80+shipping on ebay with the 1.5. Good luck finding a cheaper one. I got a last gen iBook for $30 instead.

Is that Adam Ant?

Bump

I have an 12" iBook G4.
Didn't plan on getting one but got one for real cheap, so I though might as well put MorphOS on it for fun.

Pics?

...

...

Gonna post a better and newer pic of that laptop.

How is morph os on the g4 iboks? Is it even somewhat useful?

When?

The iBook is fully supported if you ask that. From WiFi to graphics drivers.
Else it's like MorphOS usually is.

Now.

Also fuck running Calmira on 1MB RAM, took 5 minutes to load.

That scanline tho

Real hot, specs?

Today is let's try to figure out what's wrong with the 5151 day. It's my main barrier to getting a working PC setup.

It keeps instantly blowing fuses. Thankfully it's a simple monitor and there's not too much to go wrong.

I bought the SAMs for it, if anyone is interested I'll post it somewhere for download.

>what's wrong with the 5151
Got it! The monitor seems to have fallen out the case.

Good job user, you've solved it!

Any ideas what might be wrong?

286

I have this thing lying around

Hello friends,
I got a PDA(personal data assistant) that I haven't been using for almost a decade.
No one seems to want to buy it even for $50.
Therefore I don't know what to do with it.
It works fine/ has no issue.
Can I donate it or do I just dump it into an electronics recycling bin somewhere?

...

the future is now

Id offer to take it for the price of shipping, but some shit happened this month that ate into my random computer shit buying money.

...

...

My school gave us these in high school and before that the clamshell ones (g3?) I remember playing marble blast gold and pokemon/fire emblem roms all day on it in class.

I wish mine didn't kick the bucket a few years back; I really miss it.

They are ~$40 on ebay. I want a clamshell but not for the +$100 they go for.

Also Marble Blast Gold works on El Cap, its a good timewaster.

anyways, how useful/useless is a later intellistation in the modern world? Can it handle Xubuntu alright?

Yes, but why would you?

Why wouldn't I?

Unless you get a POWER one, they aren't really that special.

But they look cool
and Steve Jobs hated IBM
and I've never owned a Xeon before
but a POWER processor would be GOAT

Of the laptop? The retractable mouse.

It depends on what model, and what's "useful" to you? I can get most of my personal work done on one of them with XP, any *nix would work just fine but that's kind of boring.

It's not like the last of the POWER models were all that "special" either, they just look nice. Otherwise they were practically Power Macs with different firmware that could boot AIX (which is a little neglected on the desktop), when you really got down to it.

>Of the laptop? The retractable mouse.
What. the. fuck.

How does it work!?

>also they need to bring back document displays
Jesus, I'd love a document display laptop for work

Really all it would be nice for is a tower for shitposting, light graphic design, and maybe retro gaming. It would also cover the AESTHETICS and go nicely with my thinkpad

Nothing what a hacksaw and hot glue can't fix.

It docks in the side and is released with the button on the upper left of that picture, it takes some getting used to.

This shitty video I found is the only one that seems to show it to some detail:

youtu.be/DEGwhmbp2iA?t=942

Could pull that off pretty easily with one, just don't pay out the ass. You should be able to get one for under $40 nowadays.

just flip your monitor and change the view

Used one in 1999 in a post office lost in the middle of French countryside, Charente Maritime. I am not french.

So the mouse sensor is inside the laptop?

You could say that, it uses the stick it's attached to to gauge the position of the mouse.

That's fucking cool man.

Wow

I know that feel.
Don't give in though.
What they are, you were, what you are, they will be.

That is cool.

The iBook G4 is a nice bit of kit too. Comfy sized.

here ya go

no

>here ya go
Fuck.

Of your setup I mean...

Never mind, I'm an idiot lol

I'm preparing for a move so my vintage computers are all in a pile right now sadly.

When I get my new nerd room set up I will feature it. It's gonna be comfy.

I had a whole lab of Quadra 700s and nice Apple monitors, and gave them away before my cross-country move. Dumb.

However my wife's work's IT guy just found a closet of vintage Macs that he wants to get rid of, $25 for the whole pile. My wife doesn't know what models they are exactly but they are all pre-2000 era, she is sure of it.

I'm fucking excited.

>but I worry about how much longer that old spinny drive will last
wouldn't bother losing sleep over it, if it still works and you're storing it properly there's no reason for it to fail out of the blue, shitty drives fail fast

at least from my experience, 90% of the systems I buy work just fine with their all original hardware

Even if this is true a SCSI2SD will make those machines a LOT less noisy, a lot faster, and it will also ease the burden on an elderly PSU by quite a bit.

Your wife's boyfriend won't even give you shit for free?
Cucked hard.

that's pretty sweet, blog about it when you get them
let's hope you get some snow white gear or nice office shitboxes

>a lot faster
the SCSI2SD is sadly limited to 2.5 MB/s only, but it will boost speed with it's instant response time

ya ya it's state property so it can't just be disposed of for free
I will make a post once I get them working. It'd be fun to play some BOLO over the Internet sometime, there must be an Appletalk over IP proxy or something.

Ya, it's not perfect but it's nice. iTead is working on another revision, let's hope they increase the speed.

I noticed Debbie Harry first...

>nerdgasm

I planned on getting a SCSI2SD for my Q650 too, but probably gonna just get a adapter for 50-to-80 pin SCSI and a bigger and faster SCSI hard drive.

how much ram u got

128MB

>will make those machines a LOT less noisy
honestly from my experience, not really, most SGI boxes are wind tunnels with or without drives
besides, noise is a big part of old hardware anyway, and if seeking really kills you, you can always wear headphones

as far as speed goes, maybe, but I've never found my systems really all that unresponsive as they were and really if I cared that much about it I wouldn't be using a decades-old SGI system in the first place

>and it will also ease the burden on an elderly PSU by quite a bit.
even big 10Ks eat maybe 10 watts maximum, newer ones with better power management technologies even less, those SGI systems are built to take way more punishment than that

>besides, noise is a big part of old hardware anyway
Most of my shit has passive cooling, eh

Nice, pics?

It's the one here.
Right desk, middle.

it's all subjective, not really trying to discourage it entirely, just doesn't really feel like something I would worry about too much

just was never a fan of going solid state on old hardware, it's just... boring, to be honest, and feels kind of hackish, mixing old and new was never my thing

nice nerd room

lots of RAM is nice, running OS 7 or 8?

I'm just paranoid, the easier I can make it on a PSU the better.

>it's just... boring, to be honest, and feels kind of hackish, mixing old and new was never my thing
that's just like your opinion man

Something like a CF card on a native ATA bus is okay if you ask me.

Else I agree with you. The sound of a spinning and clicking drive is the best part of turning on my old XT.

Heres a ThinkPad 240X
I have the same one with the proprietary floppy drive

Only OS 8.1 right now. Might do multi boot stuff when I get a bigger drive.

>I'm just paranoid, the easier I can make it on a PSU the better.
Even better is just to upgrade the PSU with newer components or replace the insides entirely, it's the best you can do to make those old boxes last and run better.

Too small, I'd sneeze and lose it!

and heres an actual pic of mine next to my X200s

Nice ThinkPad family you got there m8

...

still bigger than my Toshiba AC100

>vector babes

>the easier I can make it on a PSU the better.
yeah I get you, my Octane fried 3 days after I got it, sucked ass (but it had no drives)

but I've had my share of paranoia with this as well on other systems and drives don't seem like all that much of an issue with that from what I've researched, seems especially on SGIs I would worry more about your expansion cards and other options like that, though most of them are pretty adequately equipped for it

you can also always go with external disk cages too, those things were usually run with them anyway

>that's just like your opinion man
well, it's Cred Forums after all

CF's pretty alright, and you can use Microdrives if you're super autistic (which actually seems like a good idea to me since you don't have to worry as much about things like memory loss if you want to put it into long-term storage for example)

wanted one of those to go with my 600E forever

>Only OS 8.1 right now. Might do multi boot stuff when I get a bigger drive.
8.1 is fine for such a box if you ask me. I'm a bit of a 7 fan though, you can make most OS 8 software run with a couple extensions (the names of which which escape my mind at this time).

>Even better is just to upgrade the PSU with newer components or replace the insides entirely, it's the best you can do to make those old boxes last and run better.
Yeah it's a fun tinkering-oriented hobby. Really activates my autism in a good way.

If you're ever in Portland, drop by the Vintage Tek museum on Beaverton-Hillsadal highway. Really nice shop with some really good people who know their shit.

They're restoring an electron microscope and will eventually allow the public to use it, but the exhibits are mainly Tek-related of course. Couple HP items in there as well.

thanks. guns arent mine btw

Here's my lil buddy, not a computer but it can be useful in the vintage computer hobby.

care to share the wallpaper?

Nice, the guns make it look like turbo autism
No hate

Second this

Not him, but Google reverse image search is magic.

Holy shit, nice!

Legends never die.

The 214's a pretty nice little scope, ANALOG storage tube tech, but it's a bear to find parts and the Ni-Cad pack is part of the power supply (think large cap) circuitry!

Still runs fine on AC but the battery's shot and nearly impossible to replace. The fine retired gents at Vintage Tek want it badly though. Mine's in great shape, most of these portable units were severely abused during the kind of field service environments they had to withstand. They're willing to trade me straight-up for an aligned and massively upgraded scope of my choice (excepting some of their super rare units) so soon it'll be bye bye for this little friend. I'll miss it but if I want another battery-portable scope I'll get a Rigol or some other Chinese thing that's faster.

Commodore seems pretty dead to me.

Awesome dude, pick something and be happy for your little guy.

>I was one of the VMware industry liaisons to the OLPC organization while I was a student at MIT. We worked to virtualize the operating system to improve development efforts.

Yeah I mostly messed around with serial terminal stuff and displaying HGR images. Haven't had much time to do anything related to my hobby since I'm back in college.

Cheapest laptop like a libretto? I want an old laptop to play with sub 50$. No thrift stores near me and its not summer anymore for garage sales :

CL or eBay? Set a price limit.

Not even really a retro thread thing, you can get a Pentium 4 or even a C2D with a bust battery for that price.

Any recommendations for keywords?

Set price limit to 50 bucks and search for shit and crap...
...maybe a good keyword would be LAPTOP?

what cpu?

>Is one of the biggest pieces of crap
>Everything thing was broken, the UI was shit, had to use commands to do most shit
Yeah the UI / OS is pretty half-assed. You can run pretty much anything you like though, as long as you're comfortable using the command line a bit.

At least it's lighter weight than Gnome topkek.

Don't just get any old laptop.

Figure out something you want, pick an era, etc. You might want to see if the unit you like has new batteries available, many popular ancient computers still have new batteries available.

>I can't tell if you are the biggest hipster on the board or stallman gandpa
I'm a fucking mystery.

>Are you me?
No but we've been in these kinds of threads together before I think.

>I managed to get my hands on one of those, really hard to find something to laplink with it for some reason, only ever managed to get it working with a shitty 486 Thinkpad.
I think you're OK on 128MB cards and smaller if they conform to the earlier CF standard actually. I use a CF adapter in my 200LX without any special drivers, even have virtual memory going on it. Yeah I know I could fuck the card in like 3000 years etc.
