start working in IT

various friends that studied other stuff start telling me things like:
'IT is not gonna last for long'
'it's gonna get flooded by new people'
'it's just a fad, it'll die down'
'oh man, i couldn't do that, sitting like that in front of a screen all day'

also, friends start imagining their (potential) future careers:
'good thing about my career is that i'll be moving among people, imagine having to sit in front of a screen for 8 hours'
'oh i'll have this massive salary, imagine having to life with <insert sum>', where the sum just so happened to be exactly what i was earning (and it wasn't that round of a number)'

Anyone else get shit like this?

Aaron Cooper

IT is not gonna last for long
They clearly have no clue

Nicholas Long
Nicholas Long

This lol, with increasing amounts of stuff being automated IT is only getting bigger.

I work as an economist and even I'm expected to learn how to program.

Gavin Perry
Gavin Perry

Learning to write code doesn't imply that your job is IT.

Zachary Cruz
Zachary Cruz

Usually they know that I'm brutally honest and tone down this talk. I had people that are still studying psychology telling me the same thing; my response to them is usually that they should be really start to work and study double if they really wanna make it. 99% of the people in uni aim high user, it's only natural you will get this kind of talk. 10% of them will be actually have the salary they wish, and sometimes it's thanks to friends and family grants.

Jacob Diaz

flooded by new people
I wish. Then perhaps I could not spend 3 months employing 4 developers and focus on coding. Fuck

Jack Evans
Jack Evans

'oh man, i couldn't do that, sitting like that in front of a screen all day'
this is kinda what's bugging me too, halfway into my degree I'm starting to feel put off by the prospect of doing that.

Henry Carter
Henry Carter

That's not even what he's implying.

Programming and IT are two entirely different fields. It's like railroad designer vs train engineer.

Logan Murphy
Logan Murphy

IT is not gonna last for long
It'll last as long as people keep being retarded when it comes to computers, which at this point seems like it's only becoming a bigger problem.

It's gonna get flooded by new people
Maybe, but so far while it has grown it's only needed more and more people, so this probably won't be an issue for a long time.

It's just a fad, it'll die down
See first rebuttal

Oh man, I couldn't do that, sitting like that in front of a screen all day
If you can, who cares? It's what you wanted to do. Different strokes, etc.

As for the others:

I'll be moving among people
See previous rebuttal
I'll have this massive salary
They might think they will, but I doubt it.

Imagine having to live on X-amount
As long as you're good at what you do, you can climb to higher levels of IT where things get more specialized very easily since you get a sort of pyramid effect. Tons of people know basic troubleshooting, less but still quite a lot know basic networking shit, but from there you get to more and more esoteric systems with fewer people and more demand, and those positions make tons (easily 6 figures). Plus if the salary is enough to live comfortably for you, who gives a shit?

Juan Green
Juan Green

They say this shit because they're jealous, and possibly even intimidated of their own lack of future.

'IT is not gonna last for long'
'it's gonna get flooded by new people'
'it's just a fad, it'll die down'
Ignorance, that's like someone in the 60's saying that a programmer is a "fad" or not gonna last.

'oh man, i couldn't do that, sitting like that in front of a screen all day'
I'd rather sit in front of a screen and use my mind, as opposed to doing a physical job that will destroy my body in 20 years.
I'd also rather interact with a computer than kiss ass all day in some sort of "moving among people" job.

'oh i'll have this massive salary, imagine having to life with <insert sum>', where the sum just so happened to be exactly what i was earning (and it wasn't that round of a number)'

Why do you tell people (other than close friends) what you make? Try not to let it get to you man, people in college tell themselves all kinds of shit so they can justify the massive cost of college to themselves.
When I see them working at a job that pays a big check, that's when I'd actually care about what they say. (Hint: most of them will go back to working $15-$20/hr jobs).

If you're in your 20's and making $40-60k, you're doing well for yourself.

Levi Martinez

Anyone who calls it "IT" is going nowhere in the field.

Lucas Reyes

'oh man, i couldn't do that, sitting like that in front of a screen all day'
I quit my programming job because of this. I was literally doing nothing but sitting behind my desk for the entire day, doing what I was told to do.
God that shit sucked the life out of me.

'oh i'll have this massive salary, imagine having to life with <insert sum>', where the sum just so happened to be exactly what i was earning (and it wasn't that round of a number)'
They won't and it won't matter because this is such a shit argument. I'm a courier right now and frankly I don't give a fuck about my shit pay because I get to drive around in a fancy truck all day.

Hunter Reyes

I want this to be true, I would love to be a trucker or a courier like you listening to audiobooks while the sights are passing me by but I'm to beta to change my life like that, yet

Christopher Cox

'good thing about my career is that i'll be moving among people, imagine having to sit in front of a screen for 8 hours'
corporate software development means 50% of your time will be spent in various meetings

that and business trips, team events, extra training, interesting dev conferences are all a regular part of the life

Do you have any dependents?

If not, there's literally nothing preventing you from doing something like that. Take the leap.

work warehouse job
shit job, shit hours, shit commute, but pays $31/hr. Full benefits, profit sharing check etc
friends always busting my balls
"you're gonna work there?! What a waste"
23 years old, new car all paid up. Will have a house paid off before I'm 35.
friends still coasting entirely on mommy and daddy's dime

I have a 2 year associates degree in Network Administration. Going to pursue a bachelor's in NetSEC. Figure Fuck it, my job pays for it anyway. My one friend still talks down to me about the entire job. Meanwhile he went to school for "game design". Hasn't made single thing. Not even a character model. Yet has the audacity to say "your job is dead end and you're wasting your life", all while doing nothing but playing games and drinking for 14 hours a day.

Fuck you Mike. Sit in your dad's basement playing CS:GO all day. I'm sure those job opportunities will be kicking down your door any day now.

Isaiah Roberts
Isaiah Roberts

How you did it
I just did really, people would say OMG WHY WOULD YOU THROW AWAY YOUR EDUCATION HURR DURR but that's one fucking thing you should never pay attention to. Just go and look for courier companies and job listing websites and search for shit. If you don't have a trucker's license, you can still look for the courier jobs that use delivery vans or shit. If it suits you, you can always go and get a trucker's license afterward. Some companies even offer such training so you can stay with the same employer. It's just a matter of going for it.

How I find it now
I still like it. I deliver larger goods and parcels, and some of the clients I deliver to are nice enough to offer me a coffee while I'm unloading their stuff.

As for programming, I still do that too in my spare time. Programming as a job these days is shit though, you're better off going full sysadmin because then you get to do fuck all during the day.

Oliver Jenkins
Oliver Jenkins

Yes, my parrents need some support financially as my father can't work but I don't think that would be too much of a problem cause I saved quite a lot of money living as I do. It wouldn't be anything new in my family either - I have a Port Engineer cousin who is a trucker now. Mother would be broken thinking I'm "toiling" and throwing away my education.

Andrew Adams

Christian Russell

That's because until you get to the network design tier, we're basically server/router/switch mechanics.
I'm not downplaying the importance of IT, but the job itself is in the same vein as electricians and plumbers.

The difference is that IT, once you get beyond the tier 1 helpdesk, requires a relatively large amount of knowledge and problem solving skills.

We're just drones who they use like slaves and nobody even appreciates or understands
Tbh it sounds like you have a shit workplace. In all the places I've worked IT, we've been appreciated because people see how fast shit stops once the network goes down.

Funny enough, IT is one of the careers where the potential is there to make $150k+.
It won't happen for 95% of us, but the potential is there.

It's still not healthy just in a different way. I do agree though, fuck physical work.

Justin Ramirez
Justin Ramirez

With 20 years in IT, I can tell you..
Automation is the future. From both a cost and consistency perspective.
Some days you spend 8 - 12 hours in front of your computer, others you're hardly ever at your desk
You're replaceable for someone who will do what you do for less or has more experience.

That said, I do the automation, and make enough. I also get to work from home on this project. Can't lie, it kind of sucks.

William Murphy
William Murphy

In the US you don't make terrible money as a truck driver. $40k, and a lot of your expenses are negligible because you're driving on the company's dime. That's enough to send some money home.

I'd sit down with mom and explain to her that you're unhappy with your current situation, and need a different experience.
She's probably genuinely worried you're wasting your time. Also, education shouldn't be just a peice of paper to get a job, it's a time for personal growth and development.

Josiah Evans

Yeah, I try to hit the gym every day and run at least a mile, if not two.

Used to be in America you turn 18, become and adult, get a job and move out. Unfortunately now that's basically impossible because the only jobs an 18 year old can get pay poverty-tier wages, so most people live with their parents well into their 20s, this hasn't stopped that from being associated with being a poor fuckup though, so people use it as an insult.

If you want to live instead of just breathing and eating you have these options:

- Become a manager where you work.
- Figure out a way to get rich with a simple project like a fart button app.
- Get out of IT.

These areas are all hell:

- Commercial programming.
- Gamedev.
- Support.
- Infrastructure.

Given the odds you'll probably land in one or more jobs where two thirds of what you learned in school doesn't apply. Even if it did it's too risky to change the product or it will take too much time (read: money) to implement or your boss simply doesn't see the point of it and yells that you have to deliver on time.

After a certain point you just feel like your job is not that different from that of a plumber, except working as a plumber is way less stressful.

It will last, but it will last because there's no other way around it. Just like you either do it yourself or you hire a plumber to fix your shit. It must be done.
