Retro thread

I was really suprised when i see no retro threads. I seen a ibm Model 60 at a goodwill but couldn't make out if its destroyed or not, gonna check it out tomorrow.

Beautiful user

Thank you desu. Luckily I have access to a poster printer as you cannot buy the poster anywhere. I can't find any places at all that have Quake posters. If someone has a link that'd be awesome, all I can find is DOOM merch, classic and 2016. I have 2 more DOOM ones on the way + frames to add to my Doom 1 poster, pic related is how it will be laid out on the adjacent wall, but I'm more of a Quake guy, so it sucks that you can't find shit for merch for it. If anybody knows, that'd be awesome, or post more Quake posters so I can print them.

Awesome!
I was just thinking the other day to print some retro posters!
I think the local photo studio has options for that.

Legitimately cool

...

thats fucking amazing
how much did it cost you

Free. I work in a school district as an IT site manager so I just borrowed the art teacher's poster printer while she was away and printed like 7-8 posters. Unfortunately the others are not up yet as I have to get custom frames, they are 16:9 wallpapers printed to a 24x36 paper, so obviously they had to be trimmed of white space, so they didn't end up being 24x36. I think they're more 15x26. I printed:

>Xonotic
>Unreal Tournmanet
>Thief II
>Quake III: Arena
>QUAKE

And a couple others. Can't remember, they are in the closet waiting for frames. I'll be posting in /bst/ soon once I get them.

nice. do you know how much would it cost to do the printing and get the portrait ?
like 20 bucks? or less

aliexpress.com/af/custom-poster.html?ltype=wholesale&d=y&origin=n&isViewCP=y&SearchText=custom poster&opensearch=true&blanktest=0
Generally under $20 if you go to china. Otherwise see how much a local shop would charge.

China wont judge you for printing porn posters though.

At Staples, it's $20 for a 24x36 standard poster.

staples.com/sbd/content/copyandprint/posters.html

Ahhh shit that hit hard.

I love you

To add, 1080p is an absolute MINIMUM for a decent poster. On my Unreal Tournament poster, which was 1440p, I still got a little pixelation on the print, but only if you walk up and look at it closely.

Is it just me or does the computer in the poster look like an old PowerMac?

That looks like something out of a Fallout video game, fo real.

Pretty usual case design for the time

kotaku.com.au/2016/09/polish-auto-shop-still-runs-off-a-commodore-64/

Not really. The bezel has no place for a floppy eject button, primarily an Apple feature. Not to mention the tiny round power/reset buttons on the right hand side. I'm pretty sure the artist used a PowerMac (or later era Quadra) case a reference point.

Is it possible to emulate OS 9?

Yes, SheepShaver will do it.

Here is a handy guide:
Mini vMac for older Macs (Mac Plus particularly)
Basilisk for later m68k macs (Quadra, etc.)
ShoeBill for running A/UX (Mac II emulation)
SheepShaver for early PowerMacs (OldWorld ROM)
PearPC for later PowerMacs (NewWorld ROM)

Why do anything retro computer? When I was a supreme poorfag and underage, I would scrape together whatever shitty computer I could find and run Linux on it. But if you have literally a spare $20 to your name, you can buy another consumer-grade desktop every few years and beat the curve on whatever 1990s shitbox you're thinking of.

$20 today should get you a Dell from at least 2007.

This reminds me of kmandla's farewell post kmandla.wordpress.com/2015/04/11/like-tears-in-the-rain/
The feels...

You must be paying a lot considering the power usage of all your electronics.

It's fun and sometimes challenging putting old shit to work, you can find yourself learning about or trying out all kinds of new software and uses for a computer you never would have batted an eye to otherwise. What's the point in having such a practical piece of history when all you do is stare at it and let it rot?

>$20 today should get you a Dell from at least 2007.
I spent $5 on my dual-quad Precision T7400, I still enjoy editing audio on my Indigo2 and building models in Mathematica on my Quadra from time to time.

>this blog
Holy fuck, this must be the holy grail.

Thanks.

Is it bad form to strip apart working retro computers just for their cases?

Pretty doubtful he's running all of those 24/7, half of those systems are low-end consumer stuff that will barely eat a lightbulb's worth anyway.

If it works or is a really rare piece of gear, yeah. Sleepers are tacky as fuck anyway.

If it's irreparably broken, you'll probably have to part a working one out for replacement parts anyway.

Hosted in the center of a indoor cycle track in the morning around 6am cyclist walk in on 2000 man autistic shrieks and trying to cross track while they going 60 miles a hour.

>Play dota on warcraft 3 at Lan party. Car crashes into the fucking club house we rented whilst we in the 40th min of the game. >Sleepers are tacky as fuck anyway
I'd disagree.

Something using a case like OP's model 60 would be tight as fuck.

Something shoehorned into a 2006 gateway would be sad.

it really hurts

May have bitten off more than I can chew. Can't find a power supply for this anywhere.

>tfw when you had a TiBook as a kid
I wish I had kept that thing, it died a sad death, forgotten and eventually scrapped.

Still have the iMac G3.

Find the voltage reqs, and make your own adapter.

Yes, but not well. The state of 68k and PPC Mac emulation is years behind Amiga emulation.

All of the available emulators are awful and won't run anything that manipulates hardware at a lower level. They provide a "Mac-like" environment by patching the ROM to talk to generic ethernet/video/etc, rather than emulating a specific set of hardware.

MESS was working on Mac II emulation a few years ago but I don't know where it is now.

Modern I/O and the like kind of clashes with the older look if you ask me, especially IBM's very industrial style.

And going on the specific example, gutting microchannel hardware, even in a not immediately working state also feels like pure sacrilege. That shit's rare as fuck and especially in the case of PS/2 systems it's the way everything is engineered and fit inside that really makes it beautiful.

What particular system is that? Looks a lot like a brick ThinkPad adapter but that weirdo plug design was pretty common.

That was my first thought. Knowing me, I just might be able to.

Gateway Solo P3C. Decided to dig myself deeper after successfully resurrecting pic related.

I don't think it would look terrible with a model M keyboard, and low profile black LCD screens.
Also depends how destroyed the internals are. One such system I exhumed from an attic had baked up to 130F in the summer, and sub zero in the winter, and all the internals were toast.

I built my system in a Power Mac G5 case, but I wouldn't really call it retro.

Sometimes it's just better to think of a different time.
A time when all I had to care about was my Sims and who was coming over to play Empire Earth
When Habbo Hotel was a demanding online game
When a riced out desktop meant a Winamp skin and the space theme for Windows 98

It just keeps me distracted from what I recognize in the world as an adult, the world has always been shit but as a kid I didn't know it
And my 19 year old laptops brings me back to that feeling of just not knowing or caring

Sounds like sourcing an AC adapter without paying out the ass would be a pain, feels like ri

From the front you could probably pull it off, but from the back it would be one hell of a hackjob, and when you're doing it solely for the aesthetics, go big or go home.

>One such system I exhumed from an attic had baked up to 130F in the summer, and sub zero in the winter, and all the internals were toast.
Wouldn't disagree with that, I'm more thinking of something actually fixable like a failed cap or two, or missing socketed chips.

>I built my system in a Power Mac G5 case, but I wouldn't really call it retro.
I could rant about G5 mods forever, but you don't sound like the kind of dipshit gutting a working quad/2.0DP+ for a shitty i3 build I usually like to base my strawmen on.

i thought the same thing

>feels like ri
...rigging up a ghetto adapter for it wouldn't be a bad way to go if you can do it

Even though those look like a bitch to do that for too.

That's why we like retro stuff man.

I don't keep my G3 around because it's a good computer. It wasn't good at the time, and is borderline useless now.

Takes me back to the days when I'd run home from grade school to hop on RS, and into 6th and 7th grade when I really discovered music. When my biggest concern was the upcoming track meet, and A/V club at school was the coolest thing.

I had some dreams, now I've kinda achieved them and feel lost.

>but it's a box and it's beige
nigger the buttons are all in the same place, the proportions are identical, the drives look very similar, it's pretty unmistakable the dude used a quadra 840/power mac 8100 as a reference

>I could rant about G5 mods forever
Snagged it for $30 on CL, the radiator had sprung a leak while the system was running and absolutely fucked the thing.
Got 2 cinema displays of the same gen for $100, and have an apple keyboard from '01.

It's not finished yet, I'm waiting on my video card, and then I'm going to have to figure a way to engineer the rear I/O so its not terrible.

Nice, good luck.

I could never do a G5 mod, I'd end up spending weeks color-matching I/O ports and fucking with the ATX mount to make it look as close to the exterior aluminum as possible.

G5s are gay, because of their gay case

G4 case > G5 case

Holy hell that's impressive, I considered an iMac mod but I have limited deskspace.

My plan is to cut a square about the size of the mobo's I/O shield, and then use that apple white plastic to create sort of tunnel to make up for the 1.5" difference (I aligned the mobo with the PCI slots).

>implying the G4 doesn't look like a acrylic dildo turned computer case

>Holy hell that's impressive
For real, if I was far gone enough I'd jerk off to it, they did it absolutely immaculately. Sucks it's just a one-off thing.

>and then use that apple white plastic to create sort of tunnel to make up for the 1.5" difference
That's a pretty good idea, sounds better than the way the conversion kits just make you pretty much cut the whole back out and turn it into a Lian Li knockoff, feels like dealing with that fucking mesh shit would be hell though.

but a case made of aluminum foil is so fucking classy

>conversion kits
wut

They exist, look at the laser hive.
You cut out basically the whole back and rivet in this monstrous metal cutout.

The mesh isn't too bad, you can use it with machine screws and nuts.

Sourcing and making the plastic is going to be the hard part for me. I think it's honestly the kind of think you'd 3D print, and then gloss paint.

Hey you, smug anime poster, have a Wang...

How old is retro?

Is a 170 MByte hard drive retro?

It's subjective.

If it's from your childhood and you're old enough to post here, it's quite retro already, there are people who post Pentium 4's here, generally not retro for me, but it is for them.

>inb4 /vr/ says...
Also, stop with the /vr/ bullshit, that "ugh, only '95 and older is retro".

Most of them died a hinge related death anyways. Check ebay and see if you can get a nice one. This gigabit was $40 and the battery even holds 15 minutes of life.

Once my G4 dies I'm going to mod it into a file server or something. Plenty of space for hard drives.

Err no, it's anything pre 2000, and they're correct. Nothing after 2000 will ever be retro - sorry.

>MESS was working on Mac II emulation a few years ago but I don't know where it is now.
It's decent in MAME, I could get it to the point where I could run MegaSimpsonHomer.

Lost my screenshots, though.

The biggest CRT of mine is 400W max, also it does not run 24/7.
The biggest power eater would be my modern desktop.

Not really, the post-2000 PPC Mac shit is already gaining retro value.
Same with all the other excitic workstations and stuff.

>Anything post-2000 will never be retro.
The G4 is getting there. (Discontinued in 2004)

Plus, of course post-2000 stuff will become retro with time. You can't use a year to mark when something is retro, as that quickly becomes outdated. You have to use a time frame, like "20 years ago".

I wonder how playing Doom 2016 in 20 years is going to be...
I still remember playing Doom back in the early 90's when I was still a kid.

I got a Macintosh Classic from Finland once for free, also here (Estonia) I have seen ad's people selling them, sometimes 3-4 at a time, I'm not really interested in them though, I like the big box Macintoshes better.

Big boxes are rare here, like Quadras, but those compacts are common I'd say.

Yea but you could have a token ring network, with a dBase IV database running a homemade ERP and MRP system written in Borland C++ on the is beast. This is what these systems were build for. CRTs are not that power hungry as you may think.

It doesn't have any yet, but I'm searching for a reasonably priced accelerator (but I'd want to replace it's failing hard drive first)

I heard there may be an IBN 5100 somewhere in akiba, is it just an urban legend? If anyone has information on it please let me know, I'm currently looking for one.

There are some new old stock accelerators from Individual Computers you might want to check out.
They are quite expensive though, I'm not up to date with A1200 stuff, there might be cheaper new ones too from other people.

Also get a CF card and the $3 44-pin ATA-to-CF adapter. Won't set you back more than 15 bucks with a 4GB CF card.
Then you can even use a CF card reader and WinUAE to install everything to the CF from your PC, no need to mess around with floppies.

Every historical product has people who find it later and use it for butt diddling. Best example outside of this is people who paint my little pony on a 40 year old car or 60 year old gun. They do this because they think anyone who used the hardware at the time would let them fit in into their supposed "great lost decade" when in reality you'd see a 80% suicide rate in two weeks after the time travel when they would have to deal with the bad parts of this era they have conveniently blotted out

Why did you remove your name?

Namefagging is quantum bullshit with you guys. Without a name it's "put your name back on" and with one it's "get lost namefag". Did you know you can buy domains for 88 cents and get hosting for less than $3 a month? Or you can try where they have 2-3 threads on this per day.

We generally like you with your name, because we have filters on it.

Makes your super GPU of today look like a limp noodle

what year was this taken in ? 2003 or so ?

what episode of computer chronicles is that

i wonder what GPUs would look like nowadays if companies, or rather clients, didnt care about the looks of something that sits inside of your PC case

They would look like the way they need to, just PCBs with heatsinks and fans.

>what episode of computer chronicles is that
Can't remember, but you probably find it in no time on youtube looking up "computer chronicles amiga".

Why 'member? Shit's meant to be used, not remembered.

The only memories needed were to find my damn DSL-Not disc.

>ultra fov
>big slob in the middle

Just bait, CDs are still perfectly usable for many things.

CDs are a thing of the past
USB is faster
the internet is faster now unless you have some very crappy company

i havent built a PC with CD drive since 2010

I can't do without a CD/DVD writer.

Constantly have to write music, picture of video disc for school and companies.
Even for friends.

Stereos and video players there don't have USB, even if they would, I don't want to give out USB sticks and hope I get them back.

Also my own computers. Comfy to have it in the case then dongling by a cable.

>I don't want to give out USB sticks and hope I get them back.
This.
I get asked for ISOs, music, videos, whatever all the time.
Wouldn't ever give out my 64GB stick and expect to get it back.

>"Opps, I lost it!"
>Uses it for as their own now

This morning I got my 380ED to connect to the Internet via a PCMCIA to Ethernet card
The 3rd one I bought, it only wanted the IBM one
I'm gonna shitpost from 48mb of ram and a 166mhz Pentium MMX tonight
It loaded Cred Forums, but I had to go to work before I had the chance to post anything
Might have to get a 4chin pass to bypass the captcha though

Congrats.

It will probably do fine, my Compaq Contura with 12MB and 100MHz 486DX4 shitposts fine with a PCMCIA WiFi card.

Tell me more. I just picked up a Pentium @133MHz, 24MB and something even older. I've only gotten FreeDOS to load on the former so far.

Don't know what to say, what are you planning on using as a OS?
FreeDOS would be fine together with something like Win98.

Anyone here have an Ultra Sparc?
