if they were they'd have died soon after being introduced. but they didn't, so they aren't

I don't get why Google dosent just release ChromeOS as their tablet OS. It's perfect for tablets but I see none.

Smartwatches are a far bigger meme.

This. Also 3D TV.

the tablet form factor is useful
it’s likely never going away

I would say so, yes.

Sure there are even dumber devices, but none of them were sold in such quantities.

I don't think you quite understand what a "meme" is (on Cred Forums)

Nope, they're pretty useful.

My tablet is useful when i want to browse Cred Forums while watching anime on my tv laying on my bed.

>the tablet form factor is useful

No it isn't.

In fact it's an utter retarded form factor:
- you have to hold it.
- because of that it needs big bezels making it less portable.

A miniature laptop is better in every way, which is also why many tablets now come with a keyboard/stand.
Next step is to make the keyboard/stand better.....which turns it back into a proper laptop.

Tablets are better than laptops for when you want to watch shit lying in bed or in the shitter.

Try doing this on a laptop.

Maybe on the shitter.

But in bed a laptop is vastly superior.
You can just lay it on top of you so you, so it's more relaxing and you have your hands free to jerk off.

Pretty much all tablets have glossy screens, making them shit for reading.

If you want to read buy an e-reader (best), or a laptop with a matte screen (second best).

They're for consumption, not productivity.

>Pretty much all tablets have glossy screens, making them shit for reading.
Only if you sit outside under the noonday sun. Reflections hardly matter in most lighting situations so you’re just grasping.

they’re fine indoors
if you’re in florida like like me then they’re not great in direct sunlight

Also if you use a laptop with a clitoris you can scroll slowly as you read, which is more relaxing than having to go up and down the screen.

I got an android tablet for 100 bucks for watching porn and netflix. Mainly porn.
Pretty neat for that, anything else I use my laptop for.

absolutely, just look at the amazon tablets
it’s all about entertainment
however you can definitely handle netbook-tier tasks with a tablet that has a keyboard, it’s certianly not for everyone but the convenient size is useful for people that don’t need much screen space

Sure you can overpower reflections by increasing the brightness.
By a bright screen strains your eyes.

Local medics use it without a fucking keyboard as they use it on the go.

I have my tablet at like 40%-60% brightness indoors and it’s never been a bother, it’s not like I have it at 100% 10 inches from my face for 8 hours a day
it’s also not always in my hands, half the time I’m using it it’s for emulated games so it’s on a table like three feet from me

actually, tablets are very good for writing notes, as opposed to typing them. studies have shown that we retain more information by writing than typing. granted, a laptop with a touchscreen and stylus would also serve this purpose, however a tablet will often come in at a better price point than said laptop.

Using a laptop on your lap forces you to sit with a bad posture which leads to long term health issues and because the batteries die quickly compared to tablets, you need to frequently sit next to an electrical outlet which increases your chances of being shocked by electricity. Tablet is clearly better.

>sit next to an electrical outlet which increases your chances of being shocked by electricity

I don't know about you but I set the brightness on low for indoors use.

bought it for my mum.
she use it daily.
i doubt she can use windows lapturd.
now what?

are you one of those retards with tablet as their phone?

>bad posture

>The rise of 'iPad neck': Tablets put three times as much strain on our muscles as desktop computers
dailymail.co.uk/health/article-2997339/The-rise-iPad-neck-Tablets-three-times-strain-muscles-desktop-computers.html

I have a Note 8 if that's what you mean.

I also have an iPad Pro but I never use it.

Netbooks 2bh, I had an eeepc back when I was in university but they were a complete flash in the pan that got btfo by tablets

Just grasping the same as he is.

Laptops are 10x worse than desktop in that regard.

100$ 7” Netflix machines. The only tablets of use are the surface tablets and that’s just because they’re capable of running full suites of useful software and have better pen support, though I think the Thinkpad X/t pen tablet is best. E-readers are superior for books. The biggest meme is fucking watches and speaker only devices or other IoT nonsense

worth the read?

This.

Tablets are useful and are excellent in some situations.

they can look nice as an accessory, and isn't that the main function of watches nowadays?

Smart watches are a bit of a meme but if you work on a tight schedule where you have to be somewhere different and doing something else every hour or so, it really helps to have a watch synced with your calendar to remind you when time's up. For someone who sits at a desk (or stands at a service table) all day, they probably don't do all that much. For someone constantly one the move, they're very useful.

3D tvs are probably the biggest ones, they flopped so hard, at least smartwatches have somewhat of a market

>Laptops are 10x worse than desktop in that regard.

But still 100x better than tablets.

MS Surface hardwares are full of shit. No sane person would buy one.

Haalfway through and I cannot even remember what this story is about.

You can have your phone do that. Most people nowadays don't even have a watch and use their phone as their watch.

Any tablet recommendations for watching anime on my daily train ride?

Yeah, then you can to pull your phone out. If your hands are busy, then thats not very convenient.

worst unusable shit, you can't type and you are blocked to "APPS".
Small laptops like x230 or surface are the way to go

They are probably going that route.

I have a Pixel C tablet and while the hardware is well designated, Android fucking sucks for tablets.

Have been playing around with a Pixelbook and it's much better. Ordered one recently because it's finally a well designed 2-in-1.

Will be putting GalliumOS on it and use it as a good personal / travel part time machine.

>ChromeOS
Its touch interface is trash, especially for the main Chrome browser. Still needs a lot of work before anyone ever seriously considers putting it on a tablet.

Good thing to have on kitchen.
I put mine in ziplog, so I can shitpost with greasy hands, or find the fucking recipe.
Also kinda nice to watch films in parking lot while waiting someone.
But it is not a fucking replacement to laptop or battle station, as they were forcing it.

Blackberry Playbook if you want something under like 30$ on eBay

It seems "meme" has a definition of "popular thing I don't like" that it steadily is gravitating towards on Cred Forums.

It's honestly fascinating watching as Cred Forums culture develops. People make up their own definitions to words and perpetuate then so smoothly and without effort. It's a microcosm of how language develops over time, and I wish I wasn't so enthralled.

I think more objectively, people are using "meme" to indicate that something is merely a joke. So asking, "Are tablets a meme?" isn't much different from saying "Are tablets just a joke?"

Tablets are pointless in the era of big phones as tablets are just big phones that can't make phone calls.

Netbooks. At least tablets were useful until Smartphones evolved. Netbooks were just inconvenient from day one.

IoT is the biggest meme. Botnetted teddy bears with cameras in the eyes so the Chinese can watch your kid grind against it in xer bedroom. Shit is meme as fuck famalam.

i think surfaces are pretty useful, atleast. I got a surface pro 3 originally just to use for auto ECU reflashing and service manuals while at work, but it ended up replacing my work ipad and netbook as well as my personal desktop and laptop. i don't game heavily, so it's more than enough for everything i need other than storage space, but i set up my old desktop as a torrentbox/nas and it's been great. i don't think i've been as impressed by a gadget since i got a psp at launch.

so like this?

whats wrong with them? i hear the surface books have issues switching between gpu's but the pro line seems pretty robust. pic related surface pro 3 i7 guts

the dream of the 90s lives

I almost use my iPad more than my notebook.

It’s perfect to read my magazines, websites and books (all synced to my phone and computer), and to shitpost while watching TV.

Of course I’m still going to have a computer but there isn’t a reason to not heave both

Yes. I have a Tab 2 I got for free from work ages ago, 1GB of RAM and Android 4.1. It's usable, but there's no point because it's as annoying to carry around as a laptop but it's only as capable as a phone. The only worthwhile tablets are ones that run proper Windows.

Mine has been relegated to my car as a gauge cluster, which it's admittedly pretty useful for.

I'm looking to get one for studying. Is the Amazon Fire decent? Google keeps saying it's the best "ultra budget" one I'll find but the no name operating system worries me.

>It's honestly fascinating watching as Cred Forums culture develops. People make up their own definitions to words and perpetuate then so smoothly and without effort. It's a microcosm of how language develops over time, and I wish I wasn't so enthralled.

That is actually what's called a meme.
The way Cred Forums uses the word "meme" is itself a meme (in the original meaning, not in the Cred Forums meaning)

Any Nexus device, 7, 9, 10

all trash. if you buy a tablet that doesn't start with the letters i and p, you are doing it fucking wrong.

RIP your eye

>Mine has been relegated to my car as a gauge cluster
how?

it's not rocket science. just get an obdii or whatever plug (many are bluetooth). use some auto code reader software (alot of them come with real time engine data). mount the tablet and wire it into a free usb slot.

I have opened a PDF reader on a laptop a few times in my life, yes. What about it?

If you're using a pen a tablet is obviously going to be better no matter what

This. iPads are definitive. Android tablets are fucking garbage.

Have fun with your garbage that won't still have support 5 years later like Nexus devices

I still use mine when I'm too lazy to go over to my desk across the room but still want to shitpost.

I use my tablet for porn and as a remote for my Roku 3, Fire Stick, Chromecast, and Google TV Logitech Revue.

This
t. owned 3 Smartwaches

But it's main function is also to tell the time more quickly than pulling out your phone
But since not all have always on displays, the sensors are still unreliable and most batteries can't last two days it doesn't do that

The surface book and pro are pretty much where I'd imagine all nice laptops/tablets to be in a few more years. Robust enough hardware for full enterprise applications, but still light enough for travel, detachable touchscreen with full pen support, extra battery in the keyboard/dock. Once Apple gets iOS and macOS closer and Google gets chromeOS and Android closer I think we'll see that.

Are...are you retarded?
>You have to hold it
Not always true. Smart Covers and kickstands are a thing. Also, having to hold a tablet provides for more natural interaction with the device. Reading a book on a tablet is almost like reading a real life book (inb4 MUH MATTE; most tablets displays are so fucking bright that glare will never, EVER be a problem unless you're deliberately pointing the screen at the sun), and when watching videos you could just prop the thing up and not have to touch it at all.
Why should I have to take out a huge laptop just to read the news? I shouldn't, and this is where tablets come in. Tablets are great for minor, casual tasks that are too big for cellphones but not quite important enough to break out a full computer.

They were going to but dropped it last second for that Pixel C tablet

I think they're just low key focused on developing Fuschia to take over as a OS for all 3

>This. iPads are definitive. Android tablets are fucking garbage
Complete retard detected.

Pebble and now a Xiaomi Bip owner.
Smartwatches with 1+ month battery life and riceable custom watchfaces is where it's at.

thistbhfam

>Smart Covers and kickstands are a thing.
Yeah and they're just flimsy compared to a laptop. They often fall over in bed or shaky environments like cars.

>Reading a book on a tablet is almost like reading a real life book
In the way that it is not ergonomic and you need 2 hands, yes. A e-reader has all the benefits but a tablet has all the drawbacks.

>most tablets displays are so fucking bright that glare will never, EVER be a problem
If you pay $500+ for that oversized phone, sure.

>Why should I have to take out a huge laptop just to read the news? I shouldn't, and this is where tablets come in. Tablets are great for minor, casual tasks that are too big for cellphones but not quite important enough to break out a full computer.
That's what phones are for. Why should I carry a tablet when my phone can do EVERYTHING the tablet can do?

Even if you're poor there's decent laptops that are under 1.5KG and very thin. Both tablets and laptops require a bag, so why not bring something that actually has added functionality? And it should be said that for the same money you get a faster laptop, that will actually get OS updates without slowing it down, a decent keyboard, can stand by itself in a stable way, that has a bigger screen for media...

Tablets are a useless meme, they only make sense for grandmas and children.

>work ipad
Two words that should't be next to each other in a sentence.

No.

Which is quite sad really, I loved having a full computing experience in such a small form factor

>I loved having a full computing experience in such a small form factor
Netbooks didn't ever have full computing capacity that's why they were not just called notebooks like today. 13'' on an X240 is small enough to be useful. 13'' on an ultrabook cpu even more so. For 90% of the workforce a 13'' incher with enough connectivity to add two monitors is perfect.

Look up Torque for Android.

Is the Bip customizable?

Yes, it's a bit harder than doing it for the pebble, but it's possible.
amazfitwatchfaces.com/bip/

I'm a fuckin loser so I wear my waifu on my wrist.

>I'm a fuckin loser so I wear my waifu on my wrist.
somehow that's a lot more respectable than the usual soy that wear smartwatches.

>glossy display
>horrible battery life
>constant distractions from notifications
if you want to read ebooks, get an ebook reader.

I used to think so, until one was given to me. Now it's hard to think about having to go back to not having one. Sure, it'd be a cold day in hell before I gave up my PC for one, but they have their uses.

>when my phone can do EVERYTHING the tablet can do?
Enjoy straining your eyes on a pathetically small display.
>comparing laptops to tablets
Try laying down in bed and consuming media with a laptop. It's shit.

Two in ones are far superior but tablets are still decent devices desu

Netbooks basically did what they advertised to do, they were cheap, could do word processing and use the internet. The eeepc I had was pretty great for a university student as a device to take notes and go on the internet. Obviously you weren't going to be running photoshop or anything on it, but that's not why you bought one. If you bought a keyboard or some other peripheral for a tablet it still wouldn't have done as good a job as a netbook for the tasks it needed to do.
