Agree on that, but the problem with social networks is that the foss and secure ones are unused by the majority of content creators.

That is why we should popularize or try to, creators will gladly move after that. As little as Cred Forums using it when can, could start the wave.

There's no business model. "Be Youtube but with smaller margins" (which is how you get real human service, better payments for creators, etc) isn't a business model. And any new ideas you have will be lifted by Google.

Bitchute is pretty nice. Though they recently rebranded themselves as SPKOUT. Its supposed to be Speak Out, but I can't help but see it as SPOOK OUT. They definitely need to work on the branding a bit more if they want to grow.
That aside the tech behind it is solid. Its fast, I never have issues with videos failing to buffer as youtube sometimes does. The platform could have some lasting power, all it needs is the viewers.
Though I feel like they need to evolve and get on board with live streaming. A streaming platform that lacks the draconian TOS and censorship that Youtube and Twitch have is sorely needed.

It takes a very long time for normies to catch on to changes in trends though. When youtube emerged there are a dozen big video sites that all still got massive views. It took years for myspace to finally die as people transitioned to faceberg.
I don't think youtube and twitch are anywhere near their death spirals yet, so normies aren't going to be open to a new platform.

What's so wrong about Youtube?

They host basically everything buy extreme violence and porn FOR FREE.

Worst thing that can happen is that they decide not to advertise you, but they will still host your shit.

What you kids don't understand is that video hosting and streaming is insanely expensive, only giant companies like Google, Facebook, Microsoft and Amazon would put up with that shit.

Also Youtube has never made any net profit, ever.

The problem is youtube is not a profitable company (in spite of how popular it is).
The only way to make it less cancer would drive away any incentive to be on the platform.
E-begging is just part of internet culture now and the main reason to put up videos is to join the glorious lifestyle too.
So if you are proposing a system which doesn't have beggars in mind, it will not take off.
The people who use youtube for the free hosting could probably be swayed to use something else and you could even make a better system for it than the current system.

If someone was smart, and wanted to makes lots of money, you would create a YT competitor specifically for the Brave browser.

Could be done fairly easily with new AWS add-ons specifically for video services.

Every new piece of tech (ie. Brave browser) needs a specific killer app to get usage steamrolled. A YT competitor is probably a perfect use case for Brave -- much more so than funding written content which Braves focus is currently on.

I would gladly budget $10-20/month to fund a series of channels producing content that I'm interested in.

thats really just a marketing issue. Fairly simple to overcome. Don't pitch it as "install the brave browser" just call it the "YT App" or whatever. Make it a self-contained app that only has one function (even though its really just a reskinned browser). Happens millions of times per day on apps stores all over. Learning how to make money would vastly improve your life if you would just dedicate yourself to it.

Hope you have multiple billions you can waste on laying lines to take most of the traffic off the backbone.
Most of Youtube is on Googles own custom CDN.
This is why they can afford to run that shit at massive loss since they don't need to pay even higher prices for bandwidth than most would.
If Youtube never offered 720p onwards, they'd probably be making money.

Bitchute is about the closest to feasible, but good luck with getting that off the ground.

No, you'd have to fund it. The website itself isn't that difficult, even the software to run on the hardware can to a good extent be the common open sauce cloud / distributed storage and computing stuff, OOTB.

Maybe not QUITE solid at YT's scale and coverage, but you'd manage with it for quite a few hundred thousand users.

What's so wrong about Youtube?

Trying to make you watch what they want you to see too hard, getting fucking sick of getting top 10 videos and youtuber fingerpointing videos on my suggestions when I want neither of them. Videos filled with unnecessary filler so they can reach those oh so good 10 minutes that give increased ad revenue.

Well at least SOME compilation videos are fun. But yeah, main problem is wherever you look you see the same shit over and over again.

Julian Phillips
Julian Phillips

wherever you look you see the same shit over and over again.
There are a gazillion different videos, you can't see the same crap over and over unless you never search for anything else.

And people will not generally create good videos because most are social drama shit to entertain generation attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Lincoln Gomez
Lincoln Gomez

And people will not generally create good videos because most are social drama shit to entertain generation attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

That is exactly the problem, current system encourages quantity over quality, everyone uses the exact 3 or 4 video templates that are guaranteed to gather views from the masses. And if you want to see something actually creative and interesting, you better put on that diving suit, because you'll be searching through the shit for a while, and good luck because the fucking thing will keep trying to feed you the same worthless shit while pushing back the videos that don't bring good ad revenue.

Oliver Thompson
Oliver Thompson

I agree that the YT algorithm and the trending page are cancer but no one is forcing you to watch any of that.
Usually I don't even pay attention to the recommended videos, but once every blue moon you actually get something good in there.
For example; I wouldn't have found out about Defunctland if YT wouldn't have recommended it to me after watching so many Roller Coaster Tycoon and Planet Coaster videos.

What's so wrong about Youtube?

Constant fucking with the UI to the detriment of the user experience. Hell they automatically switched everyone to yet another flat cancer meme design and broke support for queued videos on Chromecast. You have to revert to the old (still cancerous, but slightly less so) UI for that.

There are a lot of UI designers in SV that need to put their hands in their pockets and have a bullet put through their head the moment they take them out without articulating first why the changes they want to make are beneficial to the user.

I feel like you just use search terms that the worldwide congregation of the cheap masses doesn't use, and you instantly find something.

That's quite a lot already for their undoubtedly poor success at marketing YOU the dumb shit they want to market to their actually "paying" audience that ultimately covets and buys the shit marketing agencies want them to covet and buy.

And even apart from that business model, how would a platform be doing good if they didn't promote the shit most users like? Are they supposed to actually fully individually target you on the suggestions and landing page? And what stops that from becoming a game of trying to maximally manipulate you individually?

Easton Collins

Nice double dubs.

Also, the only way would be using an RSS reader and some custom scripting.
I don't think you can pipe your subs in to media players, not tried it to be honest.

Nathaniel Bennett
Nathaniel Bennett

If you mean you wanna play all videos of a channel in the order they were uploaded, that used to be a thing back when YT still allowed custom channel designs. You could just go to the Uploads tab and have them all in a playlist that you could even watch without having to open a new tab for each video.

If you mean you wanna watch all of the videos in your Subscriptions from multiple channels the only way I could think of doing it would be making a custom Playlist for it and adding each video manually.

Austin Bennett

Vimeo isn't bad but good luck finding a channel on there that uploads regularly. Most people just use it for their film making portfolio.

There are several issues with creating a video hosting site. These are the two biggest I can think of:
1. who's going to pay to host/store all the videos?
2. This service will face the same issues that every other "alternative" service has (gab, voat, 8ch, etc), which is that it only attracts /pol/ tier 12 year olds.

Caleb Morris
Caleb Morris

the only way I could think of doing it would be making a custom Playlist for it and adding each video manually.
