>enjoyable aussie rock songs = worthy of being unofficial national anthem
get fucked, if you want an unofficial national anthem we've got waltzing matilda
youtube.com/watch?v=CwvazMc5EfE

there's even a
really feelsy
war song about Aussies in WWI getting sent into a suicide-campaign by their British overlords that refers to Waltzing Matilda's significance
youtube.com/watch?v=WG48Ftsr3OI

to explain, a lot of Australia's settlers in the 1800s trekked across the land on foot, carrying a sack of their belongings over their back, which they called a 'matilda' (hence 'waltzing matilda' meaning slogging the fucking thing across hundreds of miles of hot, scraggly open land to find water or a good place to settle)

youtu.be/E5q-dPAHif0

obviously waltzing matilda is a classic aussie folk song, but how does it represent straya? its really just about a homeless guy dying

Down under definitely, the lyrics have a stronger connection to the Australian experience. Khe Sanh is just a classic pubrock song and Australian soldiers did not play a significant role in that battle.

it's symbolistic

it's about a man who lived freely and didn't fear authority preferring to die on his own terms than accept it on someone else's

also it's the first well-known folk song written in Australia that wasn't all about Britain, so it's got historical value

> p plates are displayed on your car when you first get your licence, the significance being people on a provisional licence aren't allowed to drive after any alcohol at all.

my aussie friend made a pretty convincing point for how Khe Sahn personifies many aussie qualities

never thought about it that way, thanks cunt

having to sing it in music class in 2nd grade kinda ruined it for me desu

Definitely this:

I dunno I'm listening to down under on repeat

'Who Can it be Now' and 'Be Good Johnny' usually inspire a lot of in car karaoke.

so hard getting on aussie songs at ameriican college parties, most of my frat is actually okay with down under but khe sahn is a big no no

feels bad

thanks cunt

You're supposed to post memery, not facts you fuck biscuit

I think khe sanh is more locally liked, but most people dont know the lyrics after the first 2 lines.
