This is a bunch of US marines raising the flag on Mt. Suribachi in Iwo Jima during World War II. It was actually the second flag raising but this one looks nice and iconic. Half the men in the pic died later in the battle.

This is Falling Man, an image of a man falling after having jumped from one of the towers on 9/11. He most likely died.

This is the Trinity Test which was the first nuclear explosion completed by America in 1945. It kind of looks like the bubbles when you mix vinegar with baking soda.

This is a picture of the SR-71 Blackbird, the fastest airplane ever. It was introduced in 1966 and is still the best looking machine ever made by man.

Please can other people post some? I'm interested in other cunts' important pics.

This is a photograph of Martin Luther King, Jr. and the crowd before his famous I Have a Dream speech in which he told people about his dreams.

This illustration depicts the Haymarket Riot in Chicago in 1886. It began as a peaceful rally in support of workers striking for an eight-hour day and in reaction to the killing of several workers the previous day by the police. An unknown person threw a dynamite bomb at police as they acted to disperse the public meeting. The bomb blast and ensuing gunfire resulted in the deaths of seven police officers and at least four civilians; scores of others were wounded. The Haymarket affair is generally considered significant as the origin of international May Day observances for workers. "No single event has influenced the history of labor in Illinois, the United States, and even the world, more than the Chicago Haymarket Affair. It began with a rally on May 4, 1886, but the consequences are still being felt today. Although the rally is included in American history textbooks, very few present the event accurately or point out its significance," according to labor studies professor William J. Adelman.

In 1954 an Italian expedition conquered for the first time the K2, at the time the most difficult mountain in the world, cucking all other nations that tried very hard without success

It can't been captured in one image but this video pretty much explains it.

This is a pic of Michael Collins. He was part of the team that first landed on the moon but he had to stay in orbit around the moon in the command module. For 48 minutes when the moon was between him and Neil and Buzz and the earth he was out of radio contact with all of humanity and was the farthest a human has ever been from any human other in all of history. He was the loneliest man in the universe.

Thanks user, I'm always on the look out for interesting documentaries and that looks like one. I'll get to it after the Columbian exchange one I'm watching.

It's not like the Soviets wouldn't have done any of that shit if they were a bit richer, or even the Nazis if Hitler had halted at Europe. The American empire will fall one day and then you can post saltily like me

Until then, Pax America friendo

And while I appreciate the effort posts, it's not like you really personally contributed to any of them

You're missing the point of this thread and might be projecting. Anyone can post pics and are in fact encouraged since I'm starting to get tired of posting and would rather learn about something new and/or interesting.

seems true.
I've heard this story, reading about international labor day (here it's on May 1st), but indeed, the cop killing by dynamite wasn't mentioned.

This is a nice photo of the Hoover Dam being inspected during construction. It's quite big but modern dams, especially the Three Gorges Dam, dwarf it. It was impressive for its time.

Awesome.

K2 is 50 times more difficult than Everest
compare how many people each year climb the 2 mountains

This is a photograph of the migrant mother breast feeding her child

Everest is easier now, thanks to tourism and ropes placed on the mountain. There was a segment that had been impossible to climb before Hillary managed to do it en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hillary_Step

The worlds tallest mountain will always be a more impressive feat. K2 probably is harder now since there are fewer climbers attempting it, but it certainly wasn't at the time.

This is a picture of the 1916 Easter Rising in Dublin, Ireland.
The IRA staged a rebellion on Easter Monday, 24th of April, 1916, with the goal of freeing Ireland from British control and establishing a free Irish Republic (across the whole island)
Due to disagreement among leadership and some taking matters into their own hands, less than half of the volunteers showed up, and many simply choose not to fight in such odds. Nevertheless many brave men fought on against the British Empire.
Many Irish did not support the Rising at first since a political campaign was already underway to gain homerule from the British
But after the British Army executed every leader of the Rising, a massive rebellion began in Ireland which is arguably still in effect today
>were they provoked
No, even I don't know why they decided to fire into a crowd of civilians

>kids react

I should add that the reason half of them did not show up was not due to cowardice but conflicting orders
Some were told the Rising was cancelled, others were not

> Deutschland 83
Thx, I haven't heart about this. Will probably watch. You might want to watch "The Lives of Others" if you are interested in East German Stasi.

I watched a nice documentary on netflix that went through that. The presenter does a really fine job. I wish there were more documentaries by him. I think I've watched three or four on netflix. He's some oxford prof iirc.

If the British Army didn't execute them how would Ireland and Britain be different I wonder.

...

>You might want to watch "The Lives of Others" if you are interested in East German Stasi.
Thanks, I've seen it. It was good but kind of sad. That ending though.

I hope we'd have gained Home Rule, i imagine we'd have remained in the UK and the Commonwealth with would be detrimental to Irish culture imo, due to the influence the English have in such unions

Hmm, so was it better for Ireland to break away the way it did so it would retain its culture?

Imo yes, i don't think the British would ever have given up the whole isle since there is a sizeable "British" population residing in the North East
I wouldn't trust England with the future of our country so while the loss of life and hardships are tragic, i think it was necessary
Remember learning about this is in school, got any more American stuff?

This photo is of the Irish Honor Guard at JFK's funeral. Just a few months before President John F. Kennedy was assassinated, he visited Ireland. When President Kennedy visited Dublin, he saw something that greatly impressed him and became for him one of the highlights of the journey. After a wreath-laying ceremony at the Arbor Hill Cemetery near the graves of the leaders of the Easter Rising in Dublin in 1916, a group of Irish Army cadets performed a special, silent drill in remembrance of the dead. After the drill was completed, President Kennedy told the commanding officer it was the finest honor guard he had ever seen. When he returned to the White House, he requested a film of that drill. In the hours after President Kennedy was assassinated, his widow Jacqueline made a special request of the U.S. State Department. She wanted those Irish cadets to perform that same drill at his funeral. But that class of young men had graduated, so the duty fell to cadets from the next class, the ones who had made the film of the drill for the president.

What a beautiful story
F

The Birmingham campaign, or 1963 Birmingham movement, was a movement organized in early 1963 by the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) to bring attention to the integration efforts of African Americans in Birmingham, Alabama. Led by Martin Luther King, Jr., James Bevel, Fred Shuttlesworth and others, the campaign of nonviolent direct action culminated in widely publicized confrontations between young black students and white civic authorities, and eventually led the municipal government to change the city's discrimination laws.

An opportunity squandered is a terrible thing, especially when you had to fight to get it

The Australian 1st Division departed from Albany, Western Australia, on November 1 1914, bound for Egypt. They encamped at Mena, near Cairo, and set up operations in the shadow of the pyramids, with the initial intent to defend the Suez Canal against the Ottomans who had declared war late in October.

The period at Camp Mena lasted until February 1915.

All this preparation was finally put into full readiness mode on April 24, when the Australian and New Zealand troops, now known as ANZACs, were taken aboard a large naval flotilla that had assembled off Lemnos for a night journey to Gallipoli. The historic landing was scheduled for early next morning.

Not really important or iconic, but interesting nonetheless.

>La Violencia (Spanish pronunciation: [la βjoˈlensja], The Violence) was a ten-year period of civil war in Colombia from 1948 to 1958, between the Colombian Conservative Party and the Colombian Liberal Party, fought mainly in the rural countryside.[1][2][3]
>La Violencia is considered to have begun with the 9 April 1948 assassination of the popular politician Jorge Eliécer Gaitán, a Liberal Party presidential candidate (for the election in November 1949); his political murder provoked the Bogotazo rioting that lasted for ten hours and killed some 5,000 people.[4]
