I live in Florida. I went to a mostly white private school and the entire school including the faculty did whatever they could to make me feel uncomfortable and out of place for being black. I still live in the same area and everyone still treats me like a complete outsider.

2) Many parts of India used to be under Muslim rule, and have significant Muslim populations and cultural influence from that time. Other areas this may be less true

When I was there last year there were movies and popular media about how indians and pakis should get along and appreciate friendship.

In my talks with Indians, I found some who didn't like, but the majority said they should get over their differences. I was in Hyderabad.

hyderabad is a muslim city with a long history of cooperation, so tolerance is high.

other parts like gujarat and so-on where you have hardcore hindus, or the south where there are a lot of christians really don't like them.

I'm light skinned and have been mistaken for pretty much every single race depending on the country I am in. I mean, look at some chav like groups of whites, they also have these stereotypes about them and they have much higher crime rates and do drugs/alcohol a lot more than whites in general. I think that when society gives you this kind of image that you or "your kind" is "like this", it affects you in subtle and pervasive ways. For some it makes them recoil and inspires them to fight against the stereotype, but for others, it can erode their sense of self worth, it can make them more susceptible to bad influences, etc. A kind of feeling of "oh, society detests me anyways, so what does it matter if I do drugs, rob a store, etc".

I think this is why even blacks raised by white families have worse performance than whites, even if they got raised the exact same way as a white kid in the same situation, society's image and view of blacks still affects them and it perhaps doesn't reinforce their self confidence etc in the same way, and therefore, they might feel somewhat less able to do well in life, and even that subconscious feeling has a real (if subtle) effect over the course of their life.

Fro what I can tell, welfare has left black communities dependent on it and so, while there are more whites on welfare than blacks, and welfare doesn't discriminate by race, there is a much larger proportion of blacks on welfare.
Basically, when there was actual institutional racism and it came to an end, blacks were left to figure out what the hell they were going to do with themselves since Jim Crow had pushed most of them into poverty.
